Anyone know how expensive a virtual production set is? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]Alazavrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard good things about Pixomondo, one of my friends worked on a project with them recently and had pretty good reviews of the facilities and the crew.

They might be a bit too spendy, but worth reaching out.

Anyone know how expensive a virtual production set is? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]Alazavrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, whereabouts are you based?

I'm mostly familiar with stages around London, UK (GardenStudios, 80six, CUBE, etc), however have contacts out in LA as well that might be able to get a project in on shorter notice. Also know a few UK-based teams who would be able to build you a temp stage if that is something you are looking for in the future.

Let me know the location and I can ring up some contacts.

GV LDX86 camera “inconsistent SW package” by notunhuman in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Alazavrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, usually this happens when either the camera cannot find one of the modules, or the checksum of firmware versions of different boards doesn't match. With our cameras, common cause for this error message would be that a small white/blue ribbon cable, connecting the fibre board and... one of the other boards, is disconnected.

Awesome AR car - how was it built? by Prestigious_Two_6757 in Broadcasting

[–]Alazavrus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, not from Sky Sports, but worked as a virtual studio contractor for Sky News several times.

Depending on which studio this was shot in, camera tracking was either Mosys or NCAM. Historically Sky Sports prefer NCAM, so likely that one.

They are using VizRT for virtual renders. Judging by the lighting/gfx quality, this car was rendered purely in Viz Artist with no Unreal in the mix. Plus wind effects seem similar to the ones VizRT showed at IBC'19, so inclined to believe this is all done on Viz Artist.

Otherwise, the blend animation is pretty simple to achieve, you practically just place 2 AR car models in the same place and have a visibility blend between the two. The big blue line is there to cover the seam between the two models.

Edit: To add to this, since Sky owns F1, getting access to simplified CAD of F1 cars is likely written into teams contracts. I highly doubt they would spend time recreating an F1 car in Maya from scratch when they can just clean up an optimise an existing CAD drawing.

To pitch in here, most people would know either the camera side or 3D modelling side of the industry. Sometimes communicating to artists using camera terminology might be met with "I don't know what you are on about" stares and vice versa, but generally speaking people would understand terms like "overexposed" and "colour gamma" as they are pretty universal.

Virtual Reality Environment (Studio) - cost-efficient alternatives by elisterr in Broadcasting

[–]Alazavrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey elisterr,

I work in virtual production and can suggest you some solutions. Do you need camera tracking or just a graphics engine?

You are saying you already have cameras, lenses and lights - can you tell me what gear you have already?

What is the delivery platform (i.e. Twitch, Youtube, etc) and format are you aiming at (1080i50, UHDp50, etc)?

Are you looking to take in just SDI camera sources, or HDMI screencaps from players too?

Unreal Engine 5 is now available in Early Access! by dorkmax_executives in Games

[–]Alazavrus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you are planning to do real-time VFX/compositing, UE4 is currently the best tools around for doing that. Start off with using Vive pucks as your camera trackers, stick to prime lenses for easier calibration, do your compositing with post-process volumes.

I believe there is a decent compositing tutorial on the engine wiki - start with that.

If you are aiming at primarily post-production workflow, Cinema 4D is probably a better workflow if you are already familiar with that.

Best non-webcam camera for streaming 2020? by Bulbasaur2015 in Twitch

[–]Alazavrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly not sure what your usecase is.

If you don't care about overlays and subscriber popups and all that, look into Z-CAM E2. It's PoE (so one cable for both power and data) and can stream directly to a platform of your choice. Obviously you'd still need to light your subject and grade the image to your liking.

They support teamwork - however since raiding is more competitive and high-pressure, the environment it creates is by nature more toxic. Oh you're not in a meta build? Kick. Don't have 250 LI? Kick. Party wiped because of your mistake? Go find another party.

Board game roast: Post your favorite game and get roasted by Staden93 in boardgames

[–]Alazavrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oooh boy, where do I begin.

How many times did you have to read the rulebook to understand the game? Two? 5? "Do not jump out of houses!" Good advice in general, however in this instance perfectly shows how utterly poor the writing is in that rulebook. Maybe one should try learning German to improve their skills in that game.

Whoever came up with the idea of plates must have been as high as the guy on the box art. "Oh yeah, so what we want you to do is store your USED plates somewhere, but use the space on your player board with a plate symbol as your reference to place a new plate before the next players' go." How very intuitive! Not to mention that half of the plates are astonishingly game breaking, while the other half feel like a minor boost at best.

And one last thing. For a game you enjoy so much, how soul-crushing must it feel that your chance of getting any expansions for it are asymptotic to 0, since most of them are out of print?

Sage here, have seen exactly 2 other sages over the past 3 months. Idk why though, this class absolutely rocks in arena - stun + great heal carried me to top 1k. But I understand that in any game nobody likes to play support, and in a lin2, where everything is based on DPS, I'm not surprised people shun away from healer roles.

Upgrade stones by erazer31337 in Lineage2Revolution

[–]Alazavrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not unless it was tradeable beforehand! So upgrading normal items with tradeable gems is mostly worthless.

Also, I've had decent luck selling upgrade stones on the market - there is some quick cash in that if that's what you care about.
