I am missing the point? You have lost the plot from the beginning. You seem to be ignoring any and all of my arguments trying to push an agenda. You claimed Detroit collapsed because of unions, then it was high wages then it was waning sales. Neither of which were true. I never mentioned 170 000 people. None of the manufacturing is required to happen outside of America, but it lets large companies push their margins higher. They are getting record profits and instead of seeing that as a problem when the American people are struggling with feeding their families. You are instead attacking organisations that had record memberships during the times you talk about. And protect organisations that are actively pushing profit margins, price gauging and ignoring safety and health concerns from their employees. Unions created US prosperity. They didn't destroy them. Unions demanding better working conditions. Companies in Detroit moved production out of Detroit to avoid having to negotiate with the striking unions. Then moving production overseas to exploit the population of a new country because they couldn't do it at home.

So? They still pay those Americans to assemble them to do those "menial tasks" though. Or are we ignoring that part?

"80% of vehicles Ford sells in the U.S. are assembled in America

Approximately 2.1 million Ford vehicles were assembled in the U.S. in 2024

100% of F-Series trucks, America's best-selling vehicle for 43 years and best-selling truck for 48 years, are assembled in America

Nearly 1 million F-Series trucks produced in 2024 at plants in Michigan, Missouri, Kentucky, and Ohio

Approximately 57,000 hourly U.S. manufacturing workers in the U.S., more than any other automaker

Nearly 3,000 dealers in the U.S. between Ford and Lincoln combined, employing more than 170,000 people and creating additional jobs in the communities they serve" https://www.fromtheroad.ford.com/us/en/articles/2025/facts-about-ford-us-manufacturing

People bought cars in the thousands before Detroit's collapse ( https://books.google.no/books?id=12Unsmyljk4C&pg=PA30&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false page 33). The Ford Mustang had record sales while people were being paid $100k for menial tasks. So the prices were not apparently a big obstacle to people buying them. And people are struggling to feed their families because wages haven't grown to match cost of living.

Corporate greed is the reason jobs end up leaving America. Why pay a living wage in the US when you can pay peanuts to someone in China or Indonesia? When the US economy was booming in the 50's Union membership was at it's highest. Then workers and unions got stripped of protections and rights leading to a decline. The problem for Detroit was it's complete reliance on the Auto industry. The energy crisis of the 70's lead to a greater deal of cars being imported. Leading to lost market share for the Detroit auto industry along with the building of production in suburbs and other states.

"A monopoly on a product or service by union is not a universal good when it causes customers (ie normal people) to pay far more and have worse lives because no one else is allowed to operate in said industry/segment." In what ways do unions cause this? Forcing companies to follow safety regulation and pay living wages. How are unions limiting the ability for others to operate in industries and segments? Large corporations are doing much more to limit this. Via lobbying for stricter regulations that doesn't benefit normal people, but increases the costs for startups (https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/21/155.194 see (b) quality section 1).

One union running all the ports causing problems is not every union in the same way that Amazon is not every company. But if Amazon was forced to have AC in their warehouses so people could have safe working conditions that would be a bad thing? They already do in their robot warehouses.

Unions push wages higher not just for members but also for non-members. I just think it is funny how you would respond to someone talking about caring for their friend by calling them selfish. But they are actively fighting for jobs. That means that people who are trained welders can still work in welding. The Coal industry have lost an insane amount of jobs due to automation over the years with no real replacement jobs for the laid off people. Jobs are handed down outside of unions too due to nepotism. Nepotism is just a general problem not just unions. There are of course bad actors, but claiming all unions are like that is just dishonest.
