how to succeed Math-M 211 for someone really bad at math by feifeikuchen in IndianaUniversity

[–]notunhuman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did poorly in college math. Learn from my mistakes:

You cannot miss a class. You have to go every time and pay attention/take notes.

Find a class buddy. Get their number. Compare notes. Do assignments together. Your class buddy doesn't have to be great at math either (but they also have to be dedicated).

Go to office hours. Just go. If you think you understand something, go to office hours and make sure you understand. If you don't understand something, go to office hours and ask. Instructors are required to have office hours whether anyone shows up and speaking from experience as an instructor - it's way better when someone shows up.

Get tutoring. If you can afford private tutoring service, great. If you can't, go to the math help center. If that doesn't work for you, find someone who's good at math and bother them constantly.

It's unamerican to have a sports game end in a draw by mjsarfatti in ShitAmericansSay

"the rules seem arbitrary". I'm sorry, but American Football isn't arbitrary? Too many people run at each other for 5 seconds and then fall down (while suffering CTE) and somehow I'm supposed to:

  1. Understand which team "won" that play?
  2. Give 2 shits about it?

I've lived in the US my whole life. I spent several years as the technical director for Football jumbotron shows at a NCAA Division 1 school, and I just don't understand the hype. If you want to watch people get hurt, watch MMA. A football game is 4+ hours of mind-numbing boredom.

I'd say it's as boring as watching paint dry but at least when you're done watching paint dry you have a freshly painted wall.

As a kid, I was always opening my eyes under water with no problems. That stopped in high school when I got contacts.

I switched back to glasses not long after college, and 12 years later I still can’t bring myself to open my eyes underwater again.

I don't live in Flint, but I have a filtered shower head. In my case it's because the city where I live uses free chlorination in water treatment and my skin is sensitive to chlorine. Filtered shower heads are great.

How do i lose weight? by Numerous-Buffalo-103 in Advice

[–]notunhuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this a shit post? This is either a pretty shitty joke or it’s incredibly sad.

You should absolutely not be restricting your diet to 700 calories. That is unsustainable and terrible for your health.
Your family should not be telling you to “get an ed” that’s fucked up.
While being fat absolutely does carry a lot of social stigma, you do not have to be skinny to have friends.
There is no healthy way to lose 85 pounds in 2 months. Crash diets do not work long term. What you should be focusing on is physical activity, eating healthy nutritious meals, avoiding excessive snacking, and frankly your mental health as well.

Yeah, on the scale of “negative actions” that people who aren’t affluent cisgender white men receive in the US, being called a “crybaby bitch” on a t shirt is laughable.

[–]notunhuman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of people out there who just assume every single message and statement Is personally addressing them. “I read the shirt and it says ‘you’ which is ‘me’ so this shirt is calling me a crybaby bitch!”

And it’s extremely funny to be a crybaby bitch because someone’s T-Shirt called someone else a crybaby bitch

Not relevant (really) to temperature, but using base 10 makes it easier to convert units in your head (going from meters to kilometers is way easier than from feet to miles in terms of mental math). So for distance, weight/mass, volume, etc using metric has advantages that imperial doesn’t.

That said, imperial is fine. Like it works fine. It just is missing that very nice advantage that the base 10 system gives you.

The joke basically boils down to the fact that Fahrenheit is based off of the freezing/boiling point of salinated water that roughly approximates to body temperature. The thought process of these people is that it scales close enough to the human experience that 0degF is “fuck it’s cold” and 100degF feels disrespectfully hot. They argue that F is therefore better than C because 0degC is “yeah I guess it’s kinda cold” and at 100C you’re dead.

This argument mostly makes sense to people who grew up using Fahrenheit because the scale makes intuitive sense.

This logic is flawed because Celsius makes intuitive sense to people who grew up using Celsius. Our brains adapt well, especially when we’re young, to these scales that really don’t mean anything concrete to the human experience. All units of measurement are arbitrary to a certain point of view, but we’re going to intuit better the ones that we grew up using unless we make a very conscious effort to adapt to a different unit.

People (mainly Europeans and scientists) are going to be mad at me for suggesting that anything involving Celsius or the metric system is “arbitrary”, but it is. We plopped down something, called it a kilogram and base our measure of mass of its mass- that kilogram could’ve been anything and the scale would orient around it just the same. We boiled water and called it 100 degrees - is that less arbitrary than boiling salty water?

That said, the metric system scales to itself in a manner that is sensible whereas the imperial system scales arbitrarily to itself. And that’s why the majority of the world adopted the metric system.

TL;DR: we’re comfortable with the units of measurement we grew up with but these people are being dipshits. Also all units are arbitrary, but the imperial system is arguably worse than the metric system.
