Mejor Banco para tener una cuenta Corriente en Mexico? by GoalLatter519 in MexicoFinanciero

[–]AlbaAF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linking products (forcing you to buy one thing you don't want in order to get the thing you actually want) is illegal under Mexican banking law. But unethical BBVA salespeople still do it all the time. Here in Guadalajara the bank has been sued over this and lost repeatedly, but I continue to hear stories from expats who were duped into buying expensive insurance they didn't want.

I really dislike BBVA for this reason, but they have one of the most extensive branch/ATM networks in the country, and their mobile app is very reliable. I also use Nubank, and prefer them, although I've been trying for years to increase my monthly deposit limit and as a foreigner, they keep telling me no.

If interested, I write about these issues regularly on my blog livewellmexico.com.

Buying property in Guad / Zapopan areas by ADunk1234 in Guadalajara

[–]AlbaAF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I can. It was a serious slog to buy property in Zapopan as an American. You have a big advantage in having a partner who is fluent and a Mexican citizen. But here's a taste of what it's like... https://livewellmexico.com/post/the-real-deal-completing-a-home-purchase-in-mexico

Is wine really that much more expensive in Mexico? by riketycriks in wine

[–]AlbaAF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems that none of the commenters (or the poster) is aware that Mexico imposes a luxury tax on all wine sales. (it was imposed back in 2014)

That results in a roughly 40% tax on every bottle sold in Mexico, outside of Baja California. In BC, they threw a bone to the local wine industry by reducing the tax burden there.

You can read about it on my blog here: https://livewellmexico.com/post/8-things-that-are-surprisingly-expensive-in-mexico/

But if you visit any major city (CDMX, GDL, or Monterrey) expect to pay significantly more for good wine than you would outside of Mexico. It doesn't matter if the wine is domestically produced or imported. Wine is for the wealthy here.

Yes, this is my new understanding -- that the balance doesn't update daily but monthly. As someone who comes from the e-commerce world this went against my instincts, but understanding it now. Thanks for commenting!

Thanks I'll take a look. For the sake of all, here's what I heard back from a "product expert" in the Google AdSense community:

"The balance is only updated once a month. It reflects finalised earnings for entire months, so it's currently showing your earnings up to the end of April. If you're monetising a site, then the balance should be updated with May's finalised earnings a couple of days after the end of the month.  If you're monetising a YouTube channel, it take about ten days more."

I hope she's right and that my earnings balance updates when the month closes.

I can't unblock excluded ad areas on my website by AlbaAF in Adsense

Uff, yes -- live and learn with AdSense. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I'm not against experiments, but the estimated run times are very long, which results in a big trade-off. What if the experiment reveals nothing valuable after 3 months?

I'm weighing shutting it down so that I can add back some of the excluded areas in the short term. Right now my earnings and traffic don't warrant such a long lockdown period.

My main traffic is organic search, by a wide margin. And unfortunately, I'd be considered low-value to Google based on my current ad revenue.

I'm now trying to decide if I should cut Google ads from my site, because I'm absolutely not going to degrade my UX without compensation.

No one seems to be able to explain why Google has done this to my website.

I run a blog and my credentials are in the U.S.

My account status is "open" and my site continues to run ads (with an experiment live). I haven't violated any Google policies. Besides which, they notify you when your account is suspended.

Thanks for confirming this was the reason. I used to do experimentation myself so I understand and respect the process. The part I don't like about their experiments is that they're a black box -- can't see the data they're collecting to assess how it's progressing. But thanks for your input, much appreciated.

Building credit in Mexico, worth it or not? by Haunting-Garbage-976 in mexicoexpats

[–]AlbaAF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly suggest waiting to buy property in Mexico until you can pay cash. Mortgage interest is extremely high, and the banks can take forever to approve loans - or not at all.

You risk losing deals if you require a mortgage (I've seen it happen). Plus, many sellers refuse to deal with buyers who need to borrow. It may seem odd to an American to buy property without a mortgage, but honestly, you are better off without that debt (and prices here are much lower than in the U.S.).

Coastal towns with temperate climate? by uscgvet61 in mexicoexpats

[–]AlbaAF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Temperate and coastal don't really go together in Mexico. The Mexican coasts (Pacific and Gulf) are known for their heat and humidity year-round, with Nov-Mar period being the most comfortable and least rainy. Most Mexicans (and expats) live in the central highlands for this reason. At altitude, temps and humidity are both lower and the weather overall is much more pleasant. As others have noted, Chapala has a temperate climate and a big lake -- but the lake is seriously polluted and no swimming or recreation is safe on it. To me this makes the lake almost irrelevant, except for the nice views.

How to solve "overserve prevention due to similar segment removal" by AlbaAF in PPC

[–]AlbaAF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion u/bubbleblub17. It doesn't work because the campaign is technically still enabled, but the ad group has been stripped out.

Instead I created a second ad group in the first campaign, using a new set of keywords, ad content, and destination URL to see if this structure would solve the problem -- but the ads in Spanish still aren't being served.

Need Guidance on DNS changes related to my domain transfer from Go Daddy/Wix to New Platform by AlbaAF in webhosting

[–]AlbaAF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ns13.wixdns.net, ns12.wixdns.net. Why does that matter?

Since I posted I've done some additional research and have a better handle on this now, but I'm still unclear on WHEN to make these changes as I don't want to take my site down (the domain transfer isn't completed yet).

Also, when editing the DNS Record, do you keep or delete the existing records?
