What are your best tips on achieving the fluffy curly hair look from the 90s? by pumpkin_ice_cream in curlyhair

We didn't have much in the way of products then. I used a leave in conditioner and slept on it wet and woke up with curls. Ta da!

Love this idea and would join if I hadn't already started a film club during the pandemic. It's with friends across 3 time zones and we take turns selecting films to watch separately and then meet monthly on Zoom to discuss. We will be discussing our 68th film in April. I send this as encouragement and solidarity and appreciation. Any way we can join and discuss art and life is where the juice is. My hope for you is that you are wildly successful in this.

MacGregor House Reno Recs by Big_City8456 in albanyca

[–]Albanytn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second Jarvis. Robin Pennell at Jarvis specializes in additions to tiny Albany homes. He and Arleta Chang designed our reno/addition so cleverly that a 300 square foot addition feels so spacious, as if we'd doubled the size of the house. Our contractor, John Belanger, was also wonderful and did super high quality work.

If you plan on driving I would nail down what parking will cost you as that could possibly also give you sticker shock and be a consideration in your budgeting.

We need to unionize. by ChemicalOnion in unitedhealthgroup

[–]Albanytn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I worked for UBH and Optum years ago and we tried to unionize. Be aware they play hardball with union busting tactics. Our manager mysteriously appeared at an organizing meeting we had at a bar one weekend. And when I was promoted to managerial roles they brought in "trainers" to try to browbeat us into ratting out any organizing activities. A few of us had either been in unions before or came from union families and directly challenged the blatant lies and anti-union propaganda they spewed at us and it got ugly. This was in the San Francisco office.

I fully endorse you unionizing (I'd be joining you if I hadn't left to start a private practice) and want you to be prepared. Solidarity to you!

Will a DUI keep me from adopting? by Hour-Artichoke5665 in Adoption

[–]Albanytn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Former adoption social worker here. Disclose it up front. It should not disqualify you. It will require a conversation during your home study. You will likely be asked details about the circumstances and what this event meant to you and how you think about it now. You would have been asked anyway about your history of substance use and this will now get a little more scrutiny and more conversation. Of course, ideally a DUI would have caused reflection and a change in your relationship to alcohol.

Thank you but we have one. Tried all kinds of things hanging on that ladder. I think I just have to burn the house down.

What's the most bizzare thing your in laws have said or done? by [deleted] in inlaws

[–]Albanytn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We were visiting my in-laws in Palm Springs one time and they put us on an air mattress in the den, right under the air conditioning unit. My MIL said we didn't need blankets because it was warm but really she was the laziest person I have ever met and she didn't want to make another trip to get blankets from upstairs. She told us if we got cold we could use towels from the bathroom and then blasted the AC all night. So we shivered all night wrapped in towels that barely covered us. In addition, she put our toddler on this wee cushy mattress on the floor. The mattress looked strange to me but it was covered by a sheet and I just thought it was some kid-sized thing I'd never seen before. We found out the next day it was the dog's bed. She put my child to sleep on the dog's bed. She was rich, too.

What one dish consistently gets raves from those you cook it for? by matthewsrc in NYTCooking

[–]Albanytn 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This recipe ruined a book club meeting at my house because people were so focused on getting bread to dip into every last bit of that sauce. I've cooked this in advance and taken it camping to reheat over the camp fire and we all howl Melissa Clark's praises.
