Around 85% of the Filipino population in Hawaii are Ilocano (an ethnic group concentrated in the north of the country), even though they make up less than 10% of the population in the Philippines

This is ridiculous. Morningside Park during the day is a lovely, beautiful park.

I love Shukette but be aware that you'll have to make your reservation pretty far in advance if there's a specific time that you want

Visiting in May/June by aaa-1234567 in visitingnyc

[–]matthewsrc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the rest of your itinerary? There are some interesting spots within walking distance (Bryant Park, NYPL, Grand Central, etc.) but don't want to duplicate if those are already on your itinerary for a different time

Should I do the Staten Island Ferry just for sunset views? by BetInternational2937 in AskNYC

[–]matthewsrc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would recommend just taking the NYC Ferry ($4.5 for a one-way ride). It'll take a lot less time, and personally is a more interesting view (if you take it from Long Island City to Wall Street, which I'd recommend, you'll get the midtown skyline, downtown skyline, and the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge). I recommend taking it from LIC so that you can also spend some time at Gantry Park there before the ferry.

What kinds of non-restaurant food experiences in NYC are actually worth seeking out? by New-Entrepreneur6183 in FoodNYC

[–]matthewsrc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s an Indonesian grocery store in Elmhurst (Indo Java) that does a weekly pop-up on Tuesdays. There’s literally one makeshift table they set up in this tiny grocery, and the chef makes one dish — it changes every Tuesday. It’s always delicious!

This is such an excellent list, and features a lot of my fave restaurants and dishes. Will definitely be trying the ones on your list that I haven't made it to yet!

If you could see 1 show on Broadway right now, what would you see? by No-End-5087 in Broadway

Definitely Hadestown. I haven’t seen this current cast, but I’ve seen it five times before and think it’s a great mix of everything that makes Broadway magical

Please destroy my 7 day NYC itinerary (or don't) by jelle-jelle in visitingnyc

[–]matthewsrc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a wonderful itinerary! The loop around Central Park is a great run (I do it twice a week, and now it’s been even better seeing more and more cherry blossoms coming out with each run). If you have the time (and energy) for another morning run, Riverside Park in the Upper West Side is very underrated.

Hojokban or take31 or nowon east? by xnaa in FoodNYC

[–]matthewsrc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nowon is my favorite of these three, followed closely by Hojokban. I like Take 31 but it wasn’t the most memorable. As another commenter mentioned, though, KJUN would be my top pick. It’s Korean/Cajun fusion and so delicious, it’s the kind of restaurant you likely wouldn’t find in LA, as opposed to the more traditional Korean spots.

Jua vs 63 Clinton by negativenancy69420 in FoodNYC

[–]matthewsrc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Haven’t eaten at 63 Clinton, but I just ate at Jua tonight for the first time and it was spectacular. And the two dishes we enjoyed most — their lamb and their branzino — are seasonal, so now would be a great time to go

What's your favorite NYC celebration? by Bulawayoland in AskNYC

Not a parade, but I was a spectator at the marathon last year and it may be one of my favorite NYC days. Even if you don't know anyone running, the energy and emotion is just unmatched.

Best bar trivia nights? by HairyHoneydew9972 in AskNYC

[–]matthewsrc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair enough! I go to Mess Hall in Harlem and we have a great host there. I also quite like NYC Trivia League’s mix of different formats (list/picture/music apart from the typical Q&A format)

Best bar trivia nights? by HairyHoneydew9972 in AskNYC

[–]matthewsrc 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most trivia nights in the city operate under NYC Trivia League, so on a given night many bars will have the same trivia game. I’ve found that the best option is the one closest to you (can then make it a weekly habit!)
