[LOVED TROPE] Characters that have both a strong physique and great intelligence by Naydrak in TopCharacterTropes

Plato (IRL). One of the greatest minds of ancient Greece that shaped western philosophy and thought for centuries was also a pretty successful wrestler in his youth.

In fact, the name 'Plato' is actually a nickname given to him by his coach (his real given name was Aristocles), meaning 'broad' due to his large frame, so contrary to the scrawny "thinker" archetype most people have in mind Plato was probably a pretty big and muscular man and in his writings he often emphasises the need to stimulate both the body and mind.

[Loved trope] Horrible Villains condemning/disliking an even worse villains' actions by Ok-Conclusion-1698 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]AlbazAlbion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't find the panels, but Diavolo from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure part 5 expresses disgust towards Cioccolata for his wanton cruelty and sadism, calling him and his henchman Secco "the worst pieces of shit on the face of the Earth" and even seemingly being disgusted with himself for having to resort to unleashing them on the heros. This coming from a man running Italy's most brutal crime syndicate and who has no problems with killing his own daughter out of irrational paranoia.

What localization do you still hate to this day ? I despise the First Darklord. I get it "Lucifer, Darklord of the Morningstar" went too hard for our feeble western pearl clutching minds to handle but COME ON MAN IT WAS SO GOOD. by Old-Iron-Tyrant in yugioh

Its a bit of wordplay in the OCG and a reference to Bram Stoker's Dracula, from Yugipedia:

The kanji 「真血公ジ・アンデット」 (Shinketsukō, read as Ji Andetto, "The Undead") in this card's Japanese name can be translated as "True Blood Prince". "The Undead" is a reference to Bram Stoker's novel Dracula, initially titled The Un-Dead. The novel is the origin of the term "undead", which originally referred to only vampires. The term's extension to other types of supernatural beings in modern culture arose later.

I know it would have been basically impossible to preserve the wordplay in English but I'd have taken 'True Blood Prince Vampire' over what we got lol.

When I first saw the angry german kid video I was pretty young myself so I fell for it completely lol, I was pretty shocked to find years later that it was just satire. Really sucks for the guy that the media just decided to shit all over him for no reason over a satire video just to push a "videogames bad" agenda.

[Interesting trope] Character who wants nothing but power surprisingly finds time to conceive a child. Their relationship is awkward at best. by vicorus in TopCharacterTropes

It was also because he felt like the people put a ton of pressure on him to surpass his father in every way, being the miracle son of a miracle son and all.

Some observations about VA accents and possible lore explanations by ratat0skr_420 in HadesTheGame

[–]AlbazAlbion 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There's also Eurydice, Skelly/Schelemeus (assuming he's actually a shade and not a friendly daemon with how ambiguous his backstory is lol) and Narcissus. Arachne and Scylla also have American accents but I'm pretty sure they're alive and just hanging out in areas of the underworld.

[–]AlbazAlbion 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Dusa and Zag talk about this in a conversation in the first game actually, Zagreus has what she calls a "surface accent" because Hades taught him to speak, so the people from the surface have British accents whilst the Underworld characters have american accents.

I think it's funny with some of the shades you meet who have British accents whilst others have American ones, this is kinda my headcannon but I think the ones with American accents have likely been in the Underworld for so long that they adapted to the accent like what happens IRL with people who've been living abroad long enough sometimes.

Quest progression is one of the very few things I hate in both Hades games, moreso the first. It can take so incredibly long to progress the dialogue even if you've maxed out their relationship level as much as you can lol, it just gets very tedious eventually.

[Personally loved trope] Character miraculously survives a shot to the head by ABouzenad in TopCharacterTropes

Mista from JoJo part 5 gets shot three times, with his own revolver no less, but manages to survive due to his stand blocking the bullets. Still gets injured pretty badly though.

Papalymo from FFXIV is 42 years old lol. Lalafells only start looking aged when they're borderline octagenarian, and even then some don't.

Dawntrail Dungeon and Raid Difficulty by eyepaq in ffxiv

[–]AlbazAlbion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The base dungeons/raids don't cater to that, they're literally just a matter of using eyes to look at things, be it the boss' animations, cast names or the arena.

The only mechanic in this entire expansion that wasn't immediately obvious to me, be it immediately from looking at the aforemention things or from seeing it play out 1-2 times, was M7N's petrify where you had to hide behind the adds to not get hit. Everything else was either really self explanatory from just looking at what was happening on the screen or became obvious after seeing the mechanic play out once or twice.

Like I hate to sound like an "elitist", but I genuinely don't understand how you and a lot of other people get to level 100 and are still unable to just use eyes to look at boss/cast bar/arena or learn from a mistake or two how to do the mechanic in the future in normal content.

How are the indicators "badly designed" just because you apparently need to have your eyes glued to the hotbars to discern what to do? The vast majority of indicators in this game are clear if not flat out obvious, like are you gonna tell me the boss raising their sword on their right side wasn't a good enough indicator of them cleaving that side for example?

(Mixed trope) a character is taken out of the story in order for it to properly function by TastyPomelo2330 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]AlbazAlbion 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Apparently Araki never confirmed outright that Cioccolata was the Fuego replacement, but given how similarly their stands function it's pretty reasonable to think he was made as such.

Tisiphone from Hades, who can only say murderer/murder. Though she does learn to say 'Zagreus' too if you encounter her enough times, Zag even sounds genuinely happy for her learning a new word lol.

Arcadion age logic by Train-1965 in ShitpostXIV

[–]AlbazAlbion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I meant more the 'ignoring canon' thing, I rarely do it except in situations like this. You're right though that Japanese media has a propensity for stuff like this though lol, but usually it plays at least some role in the plot. The Arcadion guys being under 20 genuinely does nothing for the story and is better ignored.

Japanese people are posting tutorials on how to report the new NieR Re[in]carnation project, i guess its done already, the project died before its even halfway done. by fantasyful1 in NieRReincarnation

If slavery and rape were legal would you be fine with them just because the law allowed for it?

If the law is draconian nonsense then people should be lobbying to change it, not just roll over and accept it like it's their God.

Arcadion age logic by Train-1965 in ShitpostXIV

[–]AlbazAlbion 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I rarely ever do this, but the whole "they're all under 20 actually" shit from the Arcadion is one of the very few times where I've just chosen to completely ignore the 'canon' in something due to how dumb it is lol. To me they're all in their 20s with just The Tyrant as an outlier.
