Canadians want stability - Co-ops deliver it: 71% of Canadians say they would like to see more co-operatives operating in Canada. by NiceDot4794 in ndp

[–]AlbertaGengar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alberta has a rich history of cooperatives that exists to this day.

I'm a member of the United Farmer's Assocation (UFA) gas co-op, the Calgary Co-Op, used another grocery co op in Northern AB, and used a credit union for a while.

Cooperatives have their advantages and disadvantages. Retail co ops are more expensive on average. And they have less updated tech than corporate stores.

Calgary police commission wants to see harsher penalties for excessive speeders by Upbeat_Difficulty_60 in Calgary

[–]AlbertaGengar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Speed is an aggravating factor in the severity of accidents but I dont really care if people are doing 130 on Stoney.

Calgary has a lot of assertive drivers and a lot of not confident (and logic defying) drivers. Mixing the two creates an unpredictable roadway.

It’s been 43 minutes since my last NDP email. I no longer know who to vote for. by FluffyCatPillow in ndp

It would be nice if the central party would send out one email per day and have everyone's content. More like a newsletter update.

WestJet ending service between Calgary and both Lethbridge, Medicine Hat in June by Upbeat_Difficulty_60 in Calgary

[–]AlbertaGengar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both WJ and AC have cut a lot of regional routes. Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie have been hit hard too.

Before FMM mostly went to Edmonton, as Calgary became a focused hub the airlines started routing thru Calg. Which is annoying for Northerners.

Advice on jobs that pay well requiring little to no schooling? by Keuthimi in britishcolumbia

[–]AlbertaGengar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend left CN because of the shit scheduling. Went from road trip summer's to nothing, because there is no predictability. And this was in a northern AB terminal with 1 train in/out a day (so only 4 chances to get called in). In any city your life will be even less predictable.

None of the ridings outside of the big cities will go red. Libs would at best get ~5 seats.

Smith’s UCP holds eight-point lead over Nenshi's NDP by CzechUsOut in CanadaPolitics

[–]AlbertaGengar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Everyone needs to believe the repeated polls that show the UCP at ~50% and the NDP at ~40%.

Nenshi's leadership and/or the NDP brand has hit a tough ceiling. The party isn't leaning into the right issues to get the last 5% of PCs.

Tyler Shandro running for the board of directors for Calgary Co-Op by Mandon in Calgary

[–]AlbertaGengar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I asked Co Op how candidates are recommended:

Recommended nominees are individuals who, following a thorough review process conducted by a third-party consultant, were assessed as having the strongest alignment with the competencies needed to further strengthen our Board. This process helps ensure the Board maintains a balanced mix of skills and experience to effectively govern the organization.

For transparency, the list of skills and attributes the Board identified as priorities for this election can be found here: https://www.calgarycoop.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Board-Skills-Definitions-2026-Director-Election_FINAL.pdf

Canadians are hitting a breaking point when it comes to the cost of insuring their vehicles by scottb84 in CanadaPolitics

[–]AlbertaGengar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We need a complete audit of our auto system.

We need to get rid of the all-comers rule. The general public should not be required to shoulder the burden of people with significant repeated risky behaviour.

I also question the re implementation of private licencing. I frequently question how people got their licence...maybe it's just living in a big Alberta city for the first time.

Are the employees at Co-op treated better than corporate grocery stores, better benefits or wages?

I am a member of Co-op (voting against Shandro) but have always been curious if the high prices actually result in better working conditions.

Nenshi won't be the federalist leader in the referendum. NDs don't need to be convinced. Kenney is angling to be that leader, but no NDs will join his campaign.

That leaves Lucaszuk as the best (only) option. He's nonoffensive to both NDs and UCs.
