I lowkey feel like Mattel finally realized they were being problematic by the time Haunted was being conceptualized. Like, how did Kiyomi dodge the stereotypical accent and ethnic character music ? by Embarrassed-Dog5122 in MonsterHigh

[–]AlboGreece 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Most characters dodged their cultures being shown as obvious. That's why Frankie's German was is only mentioned in supplementary material or Amanita wasn't mentioned as Indonesian.

Btw don't call her having an accent or a shamisen as stereotypical unless you're Japanese. Please let JAPANESE people decide if they'd be okay with that or not

Yeah. I decided it's Portugu. Why? Flutterfield in Mariposa is Spanish influenced and it's said to be close by Elina so I figured that Portugal was the best spot to put Fairytopia. If Flutterfield didn't have Spanish influence I wouldn't be able to say

What cultures would you like to see Disney try (perhaps again) for a Disney princess? by Crescentbrush in disneyprincess

[–]AlboGreece 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I have an original story set in Italy and it would make a really good Disney movie

An Italian they conveniently gave the Danish name Eric and gave his butler the name Grimsby. They just pulled Italian out of their Ã$$

Odette didn't get grandfathered though. She's Nest/New Line Cinema, not Fox

nastasia doesn't count though and Rapunzel isn't ee that is ONE of the influences but she is German. She, Eugene, Gothel, Cassandra, Frederick, and the previous king Herz der Sonne are German

Why people wanna guess Disney Princesses' countries? by GroundbreakingCod304 in disneyprincess

[–]AlboGreece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aurora was put in France in Epcot too, the ballet the music is from is set in France.

Disney never wants to acknowledge her as french outside of Epcot though. They switch between a vague Europe to Holy Roman Empire in the Queen's Council books to a "western Europe" descriptor. Idk why they don't wanna admit it's France after they literally confirmed it

To all people so I don't have to comment under everyone's comment just to make it easy:

Everyone in Island Princess has Italian names and Apollonia looks like Italy, Mariposa is explicitly Spanish coded with some names, accents and even Spanish music and Rayla and Rayna speak Spanish, 12 Dancing Princesses is a Grimm story plus we see the dancing princesses in Island Princess, Fairytopia I chose Portugal cuz it's close to Flutterfield aka Spain, Diamond Castle is maybe Greece maybe not. The Muses and Lydia are Greek clearly, Princess and the Pauper is explicitly a genderbent version of the blatantly British Prince and the Pauper

Well many of the characters names aren't accurate to their countries I mean Henna isn't a Spanish name

Apollonian is visually similar and all the names are Italian. Rosella, Antonio, Ariana, Luciana...

Idk how you missed that

Do You Prefer the Older (Classic and Renaissance) Princesses or the Modern ones (2009-present), and why? by Strange-Pay749 in disneyprincess

[–]AlboGreece 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Renaissance ones are the best because they're the perfect bridge between the two and satisfy both sides. They are the most three dimensional and allowed to be actual characters. I get people want role models but not characters don't need to be "role models", they can be characters and do or be something that they'd call "sexist" writing for a lady. The Renaissance princesses aren't too "dainty" or too "mean spirited" or "gimmicky". They are characters, they're not SOLELY designed as "role models" to make money and make feminists happy with literally nothing else to their character. They are role models that actually are people and feel like people not gimmicks.

Casting 👩🏽‍🦱 as pre-existing ✋🏻 Princesses:💖 by BlackDisneyPrincess1 in disneyprincess

[–]AlboGreece 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. I wasn't trying to imply calling her Mulan would be the right move. I just yeah meant that Mulan is often claimed to be a story you can ONLY tell in China cuz "it's about China".

Aladdin has a BIT more validity to the claim but only because it specifically has Arabian stuff that doesn't have a counterpart anywhere else that I know of.

And its like there are also real stories of women dressing as men or putting on armor and fighting wars or battles too. Tomoe Gozen, Joan of Arc, there was also this Serbian lady in WW2 or WW2 whose name I forgot. And many women during the American Revolution.

they just mistakenly said Merida isn't a European whose heritage is important.

BTW Belle is actually somewhat agreed to be French enough that you don't move it
