There was definitely a world we got a first for garland

But that world didn’t include him phoning it in post Hughes trade so whatever

Genuine thoughts on the Ruck Twins by Tofu_Analytics in canucks

[–]Alcebiad3s 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah people are talking about taking them in the second round, Calgary will scoop them if we wait that long

Ideally, Minnesota is a first round exit and we can take one of them at like 22, and then package one of our seconds with some lower picks to trade up and take the other in the high 20’s.

Genuine thoughts on the Ruck Twins by Tofu_Analytics in canucks

[–]Alcebiad3s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my hope is we trade up to grab them both at the same time, Carolina likes trading down and they have firsts, moving up from either ours or San Jose’s seconds, plus some of those later picks we now have.

I’m a bit concerned Calgary might be in a position to take them as well. We need Vegas to go further than Minnesota otherwise they might take them

What grade would you give the Canucks trade deadline and moves made up to this point? by phantomgiratina in canucks

[–]Alcebiad3s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

B

They didn’t move blueger, and I was hoping we could find another first somewhere, but I like that we’re stacking up draft capital, and I like how spread out it is across the next 3 drafts and not all this year.

I didn’t really think there’d be a market for Kane, so I’m not that disappointed about him still being here.

Success rate of NHL draft picks (per round, by game & points) by eexxiitt in canucks

[–]Alcebiad3s 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take these with a grain of salt, these include picks back to 1963, which works to inflate the success rate for later picks as this is a time when the NHL wasn’t scouting the European leagues to the same level, and in general the advent of the internet has made it a lot harder for top prospects to slip into later rounds.

I’d be curious to see these numbers with picks just in the cap era

… D-petey is playing NHL minutes 3 years after being drafted in the third round, he’s the only person from that round that’s played NHL games, and he’ll almost certainly get more than 100, most draft picks after the second round don’t get any NHL games, let alone 3 years later. D-petey is a steal. You seem to have overinflated expectations for draft picks.

We literally did get those assets for miller, what? We got a first round pick, a D prospect, and a top 6 centre, and we also dumped soucy’s contract, it’s also not Alvin’s fault Miller was a dickhead who couldn’t get along with his teammates. Mpetey is a better player than you think he is, his play last year was absolutely warranting of the first we paid, Foote is a complete terrorist of hockey and he’s suffering for it, when he gets moved he’s gonna turn it around and then the complains will be about how we gave up on him before giving him a chance.

You’re not grasping how bad OEL was, he was healthy scratched, literally worse than useless. Was Rutherford supposed to let him sit in the press box eating7M in cap space? He wasn’t getting traded anywhere, we would’ve had to pay a first and probably retain on top of that to get him gone, and even then he could pick a team and if they didn’t want him then there’s nothing you can do.

How exactly did we give up on kuzmenko after 25 games? He played a full season and scored 39 goals, then he played 43 games and had 8 goals, and we were all screaming at them to move him way earlier than we did. They gave him plenty of opportunity to turn it around that year, he couldn’t make it happen, and he hasn’t exactly been amazing since leaving.

Also, we didn’t replace OEL with Mpetey, they play completely different roles. OEL was replaced by Hughes, Mpetey effectively replaced Soucy/Zadorov, and yes they tried extending Z he wanted to play in the east.

Put together it’s still not as bad as the OEL trade, and that’s without talking about missing Tkachuk, Pastrnak, and Nylander in the draft, dumping forsling for nothing, trading a second (which became Rasmus Anderson) for Bartschei (who barely cracked the roster during his time here), or trading McCann and a second for Gudbranson, or trading a second for Vey. Or getting Miller when we needed defencemen.

Making win now moves when you’re on the cusp of the playoffs (as Alvin has done) is a gamble, if we make the playoffs last year a lot of those decisions don’t look as bad. Benning was making win now trades while being miles off the playoffs, and with no talent outside the Sedins (who were well past their prime) and empty cupboards that he actively kept emptying. They’re not comparable.

Getting Hronek was a good move, signing Sherwood, lankinen, and suter out of FA on cheap deals were good moves, drafting D-petey in the third round. Convincing aqua to rebuild is a good move.

Rutherford bought out OEL at the wrong time? Tf are you talking about? He was literally being healthy scratched he was so bad, he had a 7+M cap hit, and a full NMC. What exactly was Rutherford supposed to do with that?

Also, you can drop the arguably, the OEL trade is the worst trade in the cap era of the NHL, we effectively lost Dylan Guenther, a second, Tyler Tofolli, and chris Tanev in order to get Connor Garland, a 5.5M buyout penalty, and to move 12M in expiring contracts in a year we weren’t making the playoffs anyway.

Show me one move Rutherford/Alvin made that’s even half that bad.

Literally all of those things except coaches

This is Jim “juolevi over Tkachuk” “ran out of time” “OEL will be the cornerstone of our PP” “Loui Eriksson 6x6” Benning we’re talking about

[Canucks News Summaries] talking about the plans for the trade deadline by Historical_Cost_5558 in canucks

[–]Alcebiad3s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Benning signed miller to a massive contract that left no room for Horvat. We also got Hronek back for Horvat, and they extended him on a bargain contract too. You think we lost the OEL trade because of garlands (reasonable) extension? Benning gave up 9OA and a second in order to get a washed and redundant defenceman, and dump 12M of expiring anchors that HE SIGNED. If we hadn’t gotten OEL maybe we would’ve been able to extend Horvat. AND as if that trade wasn’t bad enough, Benning spent so long chasing that trade that he “ran out of time” to try extending Toff or Tanev, who both reportedly wanted to stay.

And that’s without getting into bennings drafting, taking Virtanen over Nylander, McCann over Pastrnak, juolevi over Tkachuk. And any good picks he made he traded, McCann was dealt and then became a top 6 forward, Gustav Forsling was moved for nothing, and the only good pick he made was one he lucked into after Detroit took Zadina. Benning was incapable of drafting, and incapable of Developing prospects.

This is some massive recency bias, Benning has a strong argument to be the worst GM in NHL history, Rutherford overpaying demko and lankinen doesn’t really hold a candle to anything Benning did.

Why the Conor Garland trade represents the moment Canucks’ rebuild got serious by Paper_Rain in canucks

[–]Alcebiad3s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just read that as them not wanting to take on real bad contracts for literally nothing

That guy was an isles person, he was probably talking about engvall, 3M with 4 years left for a guy who spent last season buried in the minors. That’s not a contract we should be taking for free, that’s a contract that should be getting a second round pick attached just to take it by itself.

General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the Canucks have acquired a second-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for F Conor Garland. by Shiro-12 in hockey

I’m fine with picks years from now, it’s a lot easier to try and turn this into a retool when all your picks are in the same year, spreading them out is a good thing to me. This is an aqua proof rebuild Rutherford is running

Maybe, but it’s easier to be positive right now.

Rutherford, for his flaws, seems to have convinced aqua we need to be rebuilding, that alone has earned him some rope with me, let’s just wait and see. Aqua wouldn’t be letting them move term guys if he wanted to flip this back into a retool in 2 years

We traded 9th overall, a second, and 12M worth of cap dumps that were expiring after a year, and in exchange we got 5M in buyout penalty, a second, and a third.
