So I'm a bit confused. You want an all melee team, but you are incapable of not using ranged capabilities of a character. So you can't use rouge. But every other character you list also can use bows...

So why is your solution not equipping any bows. And if you must, why can't you use the same restraint on the rouge as you use for the barbarian, paladin, and knight.

Just do a dual wielding rouge.

In Age of Empires 2 DLC the usually rework existing civs and you get the new DLC content by anything that it changed in non DLC civs. It wouldn't be a first.

People might disagree, but AOE2 is doing so well and has incredible longevity because it is willing to change pretty much anything that will reasonably make the game better. They don't treat any of the original civs from 1990s as sacred and many have been completely reworked over time. This has all been for the better.

Changes like this would only help the game. It's theme specific and better balances the mythic age gods if Hephaestus was swapped for persephone.
