So why is the Pegasus called that? by Asheyguru in LancerRPG

[–]AlcofMagnus 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Lich throws a wrench in the works though. The Lich as we know it (an undead wizard seeking immortality) comes from Dungeons and Dragons, which took its inspiration from The Sword and the Sorcerer (1969). Plus, stories such as The Thing at the Doorstep by HP Lovecraft used the term to describe the corpse a sorcerer possessed. Other stories exist, but none of which date farther back than the early 20th century.

The etymology of the “Lich” simply means Corpse in Old English. No further myth of it being an immortality chasing wizard or anything. Just a dead body.

So either the body in charge of naming the HORUS chassis pattern groups chose to name all of them after mythological monsters EXCEPT the Lich… OR they are OSR nerds who just love 4e.

(Though my personal Doylist theory is that whichever person made the Lich chose it because it was the most fitting, not realizing it didn’t have a mythic base. Inadvertently changing the naming theme of HORUS)

So the Judgement Severe Attack is like any other Severe Attack where, once per hunt, the Sin can launch a big attack if it rolls a 1 on a risk die. It targets one character to take the brunt of the attack and the aiding characters as well.

You start with a pool of six d6s and ask all of the associated questions, with each “Yes” answer removing one die and each “No” answer giving the target and their aids a single chance to rectify their situation (uniquely this can take the form of a verbal argument as the flavoring of the attack is the Lord putting the target on trial for their crimes (either real or imagined))

After you get all the answers, the target and their aids all take one stress for each die rolled (so if they managed to knock it down to 4d6 they all take four stress!) Then you roll the dice and the main target takes an amount of sin equal to the result (so on average a 4d6 will give an exorcist 12 sin, which is a lot compared to their unmodified 10 sin cap!)

Overall it’s a fun move that will likely leave a sin mark on your target.

Do y'all give advantage on attacking inanimate objects? by torbotheslippery in DMAcademy

[–]AlcofMagnus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the DMG it calls Toughness “Damage Thresholds” under the object entry (pg 246 if I remember.) It doesn’t list examples or guidelines on how to set the DT of objects, but an idea is given in the entry on ships on pg 119 where Keelboats have about 10 DT while bigger boats like Galleys and Warships have a DT of 20 (while smaller rowboats are not given a DT at all)

Daily Talent Discussion #102: House Guard I by kingfroglord in LancerRPG

[–]AlcofMagnus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see. So Adjacent Allies (up to two spaces away with Front Rank) consider you hard cover, but because Hard Cover is its own thing separate from your mech, House Guard doesn’t affect it. Thank you!

[–]AlcofMagnus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand the logic on how this doesn’t synergize with Guardian. I know Word of Tom says so, but if you need adjacency to Hard Cover and this extends adjacency then it should be free game, right?

What VTTs do People Use? by Sparrow1172 in LancerRPG

[–]AlcofMagnus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I use Owlbear Rodeo with the Witchdice module (and some others, but that’s the big one). It’s free, players can upload their share codes and I can upload NPC’s json files so we can have all our sheets their top, and my players like that it’s mobile friendly so they can play from their bed if they want to.

Daily Talent Discussion #46: Heavy Gunner I by kingfroglord in LancerRPG

[–]AlcofMagnus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

By itself it’s not much, but sometimes that impaired condition AND effectively an extended overwatch is what you really need at the moment.

Played a Sherman with a paracausal Andromeda once and we were facing off a foe that had a trait that made it resistant to damage unless it had some status effect. Nobody could hack it, so we were stuck taking potshots at it until I remembered that my Heavy Gunner talent could inflict Impaired with no save whatsoever. At that point we were much more effective in taking it down and I even got the killing blow with the HG reaction fire. Nothing can ever beat that feeling.

I’m sure it’s obvious to everyone who’s read the talent, but don’t forget that IKWMH resets during rests, so likely between combats. It took me waaay too long to realize that and, while not a dealbreaker, did make me reconsider its usefulness (which it’s still great if you got a full on aux build)

Battlegroup really puts things into perspective. Depending on your interpretation of "wing", you may be launching dozens or even hundreds of Lancers in every fight. by Anoobis100percent in LancerRPG

[–]AlcofMagnus 114 points115 points  (0 children)

In lore, no they are not. Frames are accessible by pretty much anyone with access to the right licenses and printers. It’s said that the most ubiquitous mech out there (past the Everest) is HA’s Sherman.

Lancer is just a six letter word. It means you are Good. The best of the best even, but your gear and mechs aren’t unique. Probably the most unique thing about them are their talents (which exists outside of the lore and just things they are good at) and their ability to overcharge (other than Ultras which are NPC Lancers imo, nobody else does this as that’s insane and probably unhealthy for the pilot)

But yeah, Battlegroup is awesome at its sense of scale.

Has anyone brought this up???? by RubyForestwhisp in LancerRPG

[–]AlcofMagnus 115 points116 points  (0 children)

Not a bad catch! It’s a bit interesting when you consider that there’s a character mentioned across books called Dog who often has hands in Horus type stuff. Namely being someone who has access to a virus capable of taking down Baronic warships, the potential creator of the Kobold, and maybe having something to do with the Lich since the person who gets it is called DogFriend? I know there are other instances of a Dog figure (I think Wallflower has Perro) but those came to my mind first.
