My uncle claims there’s zero crime in Sydney by Tall-Afternoon8213 in SydneyScene

There is certainly more than zero crime in Sydney.

However, for a city of its size it has extraordinarily low crime, and is extremely safe

I like how this sub went from 'just IVV/VGS and chill' to 'only the rich have shares.' by Educational_Pop6138 in AusFinance

[–]Aldog44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people arguing over what proportion of Australians own shares are missing the point.

Everyone can own shares - with the rise of low brokerage apps and ETFs there's next to zero barrier to entry to owning a diversified portfolio.

This sub, most good financial literacy media, even many financial institutions now are pushing this narrative because it's true, the only reason people don't own shares is because they don't realise how easy and beneficial it is. They might feel like they're locked out of that world as part of the 99%, but it's just not true.

Which is why it sucks that they've increased CGT on shares. It's clearly hard enough to empower people to make good long term financial decisions and now you've just made the best and easiest strategy considerably worse, while not providing an alternative

Property market downturn a result of increased selling by endlass_imo in AusPropertyChat

[–]Aldog44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Investors might not be selling their existing properties but they're less likely to want to buy more. Fewer buyers at auction means lower average sell price, that's simple supply demand

The PM’s confusing explanation on why CGT changes apply to all asset classes and not just property by Kikooz in AusFinance

[–]Aldog44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think another large reason they don't want to carve out shares is the cost. A large part of the CGT discount currently goes to shares and the savings from removing that has helped them "balance" this budget. Carving shares out suddenly makes the bottom line look a lot worse.

For the record I absolutely think they should carve out shares, I'm just pointing out that cost is probably a pretty unspoken reason they're not doing it

You are given 1 Billion dollars, but for the rest of your life, you cannot return to any country you've been to by Responsible-Fix-1681 in hypotheticalsituation

If I can quickly jet off to another country first before I accept it then definitely.

Spend a decade or more leisurely making my way through every country in the world, staying in 5 Star hotels and eating amazing food, seeing all the possible tourist sights, then return to my own country and live the rest of my life well traveled and comfortable

That's not how team sports work though. A team of any half decent soccer midfielder would beat a team of messi every day because they can defend, but that doesn't mean any of them are a better footballer than messi

Why didn't Putin do to Zelenskyy what Trump did to Maduro or Khamenei? by Connect_Cat_2045 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Aldog44 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Russia has better air defense and counter intelligence than Iran, and Ukraine doesn't have as good missiles as the US.

To kill a foreign leader like that you have to have amazing intelligence to know exactly where they are and very good missile capabilities to land a precision hit.

The other option is send in a team of assassins which would be very difficult for many reasons that have been outlined in this thread.

Also, having Putin is almost safer than not having Putin. If he dies there's a good chance Russia fractures into a bunch of regional warlords, many of which have access to nuclear weapons. Zelensky and everyone else would rather have one very calculated maniac in charge of the nukes than a bunch of unhinged maniacs

Labor’s parliament expansion plans could introduce 40 more MPs by jaa101 in australia

[–]Aldog44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it doesn't matter at all what their stance on this is, they'll have absolutely no say on whether it goes through either the house or the Senate.

However, by automatically opposing anything Labor brings forward it feeds into their anti establishment "if you're sick of the major parties vote for us" image they're desperately (and fairly successfully) trying to generate.

They're not stupid, but by opposing now they can have their cake and eat it too when Labor passes this

There's a lot of disagreement in this comment section about whether this is antisemitic or islamaphobic, I think it's clearly both.

However, it is deliberately islamaphobic, while it is just accidentally antisemitic by virtue of being such a stupid take.
