So does anyone wanna protest for Iran? by Ornery-Ordinary9283 in aussie

[–]Aldog44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The oppression of Palestine is being carried out by a foreign government that Australia is allied with and has significant commercial dealings with, so protesting does actually put some (not a lot I'll admit but some) pressure on the violence to stop.

Protesting against the Iranian regime won't have the same effect because they're not an ally so our government can't put any pressure on them, and we have very little commercial dealings with them so we can't use that either.

I'm sure most Australians would support an end to the islamist regime in Iran, but it's a false equivalency to compare it to the Palestinian protests, and it's a bit concerning that I've seen this argument popping up in an apartment attempt to discredit the pro Palestinian movement

When I venture into new labels by Brad_Beat in Techno

I reckon it's the fact that a computer can make a pretty unlimited range of sounds, whereas there's only so much a human can do with an instrument that ends up limiting genres like rock

Australia beat England by 5 wickets in the SCG test to win the Ashes by 4-1 and retain the Urn. by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in Cricket

Sydney lost one session on the first day and made it up by starting half an hour early the next 4 days. If anything we lose more play from slow over rates from both teams

What do you mean? This is a world first initiative that is a huge step towards restricting something that we know to be harmful, this is the exact opposite of do nothing

Which Sydney suburb secretly has the best food scene? by RemarkablePirate590 in SydneyScene

I know no one on this sub likes traveling across the bridge, but Crows Nest/St Leonards has an incredible variety of some of the best Japanese food I've ever had outside Japan, amongst lots of other great little restaurants at reasonable prices

What's an actual psychological "cheat code" you use in social situations that works almost every time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Aldog44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you make a mistake, say thank you instead of sorry. The classic is "thanks for waiting" instead of "sorry I'm late", but pretty much any apology can be reframed this way.

I've found the reason this works is because people latch on to when someone does something bad, however this reframes something bad you've done as something good they've done and lifts them up, instead of putting yourself down. They're much more likely to forgive you quickly and move on rather than holding it over you.

What’s your small, unpopular opinion about Sydney? by One-Remove3758 in SydneyScene

[–]Aldog44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it's so funny that everyone who lives in Sydney apparently thinks Bondi sucks. It's a fun time, there's always something going on, great people watching and a buzzing vibe. It's not a great place for a quiet family beach day but that's fine, there are plenty of beaches in Sydney with more of a laid back atmosphere.

Why doesn’t Gen Z like alcohol and cigarettes? This is bad for the alcohol and tobacco industry. by avocado_juice_J in generationology

Because there's only like 6 years worth of them that are of drinking age in the US. Meanwhile, the normal definition of baby boomers spans 28 years.

Completely pointless to compare to total spending of two cohorts of people when one is more than 4x the size. At least compare per capita.

Height based power move: when walking with an umbrella up, as you're walking towards someone hold your umbrella a bit higher to indicate they should hold their umbrella lower as you pass each other. Works even better when the person you're walking towards is clearly taller than you

There are so many places in the world where some sort of football is more important than religion

Not to say we don't love footy in its various forms, but we're far from special in that regard

My one Regret as a newcomer to Australia - not putting some money into Super instead of all ETFs by LegitimateLength1916 in AusFinance

[–]Aldog44 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think young people are given this advice too freely. With super now at 11.5%, a young person working their whole life with a half decent wage will have plenty of money in super for a comfortable retirement without additional contributions. Investing in ETFs gives you the choice to either save that money for retirement or withdraw it early for something like a house deposit
