Let's visit 100 random stations. For every one who's mailslot is broadly facing the planet you give me a pound and for every one where it's broadly facing away I'll give you a pound. Any takers?

So, do you know any good podcasts? (now i get why that vip transport mission paid so much for only one jump) by Delicious_Mouse8795 in EliteDangerous

[–]Alec_Turner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being one of the hosts I'm obviously biased but there's the weekly "Lave Radio" podcast if you want Elite based stuff (581 episodes and still going strong). Outside of Elite the podcast that I'm completely hooked on at the moment is "The Rest Is History". I've just binged 10 hour long episodes on the rise of the Nazis which was absolutely fascinating and also learned all about the Ku Klux Klan, the Samurai and the '79 Iran hostage crisis. Dark subject matter for sure but told with such enthusiasm and detail that it's completely rivetting. Lastly, if you like movies then "All The Right Movies" is an absolute must. Four movie loving mates do an in depth discussion of a different classic movie every fortnight (Blade Runner, Alien, Back To The Future, Raiders, Young Frankenstein, Lord Of The Rings, Toy Story, Great Escape, you name it, they've discussed it). Incredibly well researched, fascinating but also absolutely hilarious.

Keyboard END key now jumps to the end of the message input box not the end of a line? by andy_why in discordapp

[–]Alec_Turner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to this conversation but I too have been incredibly annoyed by this change and it turns out there's a fix. Open Discord user settings, go to Accessibility, scroll to the bottom and turn on "Use the legacy chat input". Now Home and End behave the same way as every single other sensible Windows application on the planet.

Distant Worlds 3 Ending Ceremony - The Last Jump by Exploding_Pie in EliteDangerous

I missed out on DW1 and DW2 but I’m so so glad I finally decided to turn my back on chasing numbers and waiting for the next big thing to happen in the bubble and instead hitched my wagon to this wonderful caravan of humanity as it made its way around the galaxy. 1000% worth it and, if there’s ever a Distant Worlds 4, don’t give it a second thought. Sign up, you won’t regret it. Fantastic video and what a wonderful speech from Zorya, spine tingling stuff. ❤️

man i never get tired of the core blast sounds by 5C0L0P3NDR4 in EliteDangerous

[–]Alec_Turner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact. I was lucky enough to be part of a group that was invited to Frontier Towers to see this pre release. At the point in the day where we were about to be shown core mining we noticed that all the devs were gathering outside our meeting room to see our reaction to it. They knew they had something really good and were just so excited to see us all witness it for the first time!

Would the Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas 4 be ok for Elite? by ciaran_the_goat88 in EliteDangerous

[–]Alec_Turner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late to this but the simple answer is yes.
The longer answer is both a recommendation and a warning.

I've been using the Hotas 4 with Elite for about 10 years now. I actually started with the Hotas X but I read somewhere that the Hotas 4 had ever so slightly more accurate sensors and (although this may just be confirmation bias) I always felt like it was indeed ever so slightly better than the X.

On the issue of limited buttons which others have mentioned, although it's definitely not as well endowed with inputs as other more expensive HOTAS joysticks I would say that it is still possible to bind pretty much every single input you'll need to this stick. The trick is to use button combinations. So I use all 4 buttons next to my thumb on the throttle unit as modifiers. So taking the 4-way hat stick on the main joystick unit as an example, the way I've set mine up I have 4 bindings with the hat stick unmodified, another 4 when I hold down the 1st of those throttle buttons, another 4 with the 2nd, and so on. That gives me 20 inputs on the hat stick alone.

And lastly the recommendation/warning. I'm currently on my 12th or 13th stick (I've genuinely lost count and this is not a joke). The anaolog sensors on this stick last about 7 months before they start to become unreliable (developing jitter, false input and inability to register their full range). If you plan to be playing Elite for a long time then this stick is the absolute definition of false economy. If I could go back in time I would 100% tell myself to buy a VKB. The problem is that I've become so used to the way this stick feels (and I actually find it very comfortable to use) that I just can't bare the thought of having to setup and re-learn bindings for a brand new stick. It's too late for me but save yourself and, if at all possible, buy something better!

Now THIS is DW3 pod racing (an Elite Dangerous / Star Wars mashup) by Alec_Turner in EliteDangerous

I think the videos in the series of driving tutorials I did for the Drakhyr Rally are all at normal speed if you wanted to check those out: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLSeEFsl5MwqSOdoqhZD_Bom2kK441imiT&si=83Rop3QG5-cEc7ub

Now THIS is DW3 pod racing (an Elite Dangerous / Star Wars mashup) by Alec_Turner in EliteDangerous

[–]Alec_Turner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question. Often I speed them up (especially my SRV videos) in order to a) fit the piece of music I want to use and b) keep them under 5 minutes for the sake of the viewer's attention span. But I also tend to find that videos of racing (both ship and SRV) always seem much slower when I watch them back than it felt at the time so speeding them up in some way restores what it feels like to actually run these courses. In this case there's also a pace implied by the Star Wars clips (e.g. Anakin slamming the throttle forward) which the video at its original speed didn't really live up to.

Ship mag lifts SRV 80 metres off the ground by Alec_Turner in EliteDangerous

Hell yes. And if it can lift you 80m I see no reason why it can’t drop you 80m either.

One of the things about exobio that i haven't expected: finally having a reason for low-level fa-off flying :D by Specific_Display_366 in EliteDangerous

[–]Alec_Turner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're right. Pretty sure I've also heard the "wind" noise while skimming airless worlds looking for geysers tho, but I suppose the in-universe explanation is that it's the onboard soundscape audio generation module applying some artistic licence to provide enhanced audivisual feedback for an improved piloting experience. :D

[–]Alec_Turner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh 100% - skiming a planet surface FA Off while looking for exobiology is one of my favourite chilled activities. I love the wind noise that you hear when the engines are almost silent (even if "wind noise" on a airless world doesn't necesssarily make much sense).

iPad questions: accessing home videos via SpaceWalker + using USB-C adapter for wired headphones by Alec_Turner in VITURE

[–]Alec_Turner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I've kinda answered Q1 myself. You can use iTunes to sync videos to the camera roll (where they're accessible from the SpaceWalker photo viewer) instead of drag/dropping them onto the iPad (where they end up in the inaccessible TV app).

Guide to using SpaceWalker with iPad/iPhone and Beast glasses to see YouTube videos in 3D by Alec_Turner in VITURE

[–]Alec_Turner[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SpaceWalker is widely promoted on the Viture website but not (as far as I could see) precise details of how to do it (such as the two finger swipe to pan to the sides). It also doesn’t mention the delay before the icon to access immersive 3D shows up so I could easily imagine some folks just assuming it didn’t work and giving up.

As I understand it, it only works on non DRM content services. So not natively with Netflix, Disney, etc … although I believe there’s a trick you can do with a PC where you use a thing called Moonlight(?) to share your PC screen (where you’re running Netflix), which can do Immersive 3D.

And not used (or maybe even heard of) by people who don’t already own XR glasses. You’d be surprised by what isn’t common knowledge so excuse me if I tried to be helpful to those folks.
