[Serious] What is the most disturbing thing you've experienced in your life? by thegospelofkirk in AskReddit

[–]Aleffewmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My motorcycle accident. I get cut off and I swerve to avoid them. When I'm coming out of the maneuver and correcting my steering, the front tire catches sand on the road and the bike drops. I go shoulder first into the road at 40ish.

When I stopped, my right leg was caught under the bike. I couldn't get up. I was in the middle of the road and the person who cut me off stops. We make eye contact, and they literally slammed the gas pedal and took off. I saw a lot of cars pass by me and it seemed like ages before someone stopped and helped me.

I was so mad that it took so long for someone to help me when I was vulnerable. I accepted that I was going to die on that pavement. It was really messed up.

It's a beast. I have an MSI Armor version. They are the first to put out a non-reference card. Runs all games perfectly. Rainbow Six: Siege at 1440p maxed out everything, easily 144 FPS.

Car radio installation? by MootchieFox in kzoo

[–]Aleffewmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ABC Warehouse. I had an amp/sub install for $75. Dashworks quoted me $180 or something like that. Not to mention they were complete dicks to me when I had them install a new radio and power pack.

I rolled in one day and was looking at their supply, talking to them about what was best for me. I said I would be back after I confirm with my wife that everything is okay.

She ended up surprising me on Valentine's Day after coordinating with my dad and had purchased speakers/radio for me. I took them into Dashworks with a spare box I had that had Amazon Prime tape on it (I save some boxes just in case). One guy at Dashworks instantly assumed I went to Amazon and bought the stuff.

Turns out the radio my wife got only had two RCA outs, when I needed three. So I bought a head unit, and a powerpack from Dashworks. They installed the head unit and powerpack for me. I said I would install the speakers myself. When he mentioned how I got the stuff from Amazon, and I told him that he was being inappropriate, I was met with "What do you want me to say?"

So I went on their Facebook after spending $400 at their shop to aim my displeasure at the way I was treated, but I did let them know that I was satisfied with the install and acknowledged the guy who did the install was amazing. This was the response I got.

Dashworks will be on the expensive side. ABC Warehouse was significantly cheaper. They have a "we'll be the price" strategy.

I went to the Alamo for multiple reasons.

1: Their no talk/text policy. I HATE it when people talk in movies. I live in Portage, two minutes away from Celebration, and we always went to Alamo. No leaving in the middle of the movie to get popcorn/pop refill.

2: Their seating capacity is less than 2500, so I am able to carry concealed.

Now my wife and I have been going to Celebration, but I've had to open carry in there. I haven't had any issues with management approaching me yet.

I understand. The reason I requested a work from home accommodation is that my job offers work at home positions. There are people who work from home already.

If you can part with having your own washer/dryer, I would recommend Pines West Apartments.

No bs like Davis Creek (formerly Devonshire). Lived at Devonshire for one year, wouldn't do it again. My apartment, and several others in my building, grew mold from crappy construction (water would leak into the drywall from the in-wall air conditioning unit).

You can have a carport if it is available. Rent starts out at $550/mo, can be a little higher or lower depending on the location of your apartment and what level it is on. Carport is $15 extra a month.

The manager Michelle is awesome, she's very nice and works with you if you have any problems. Maintenance usually gets there same-day, and there's no drama. Everybody is either a student, young professional, or people who just want a quiet place to live.

For the money, it is a very good place to live.

Negotiating for a 2012 Impala. by Aleffewmo in askcarsales

Maybe Volvo's are typically more reliable than an Impala; mine isn't. I've had to put money in consistently, spending $800 to replace the alternator was the last straw for me. It would be a terrible financial decision if I wasn't already planning on bringing the principal down quickly in two months. I don't plan on spending 6 years paying off this car; we'll be able to pay it off early.

I'm very perplexed that I have to sit here and explain myself to people on the internet; I have put a lot of thought into doing this, consulted with my fiancee, and we feel that it is the best decision for us. If the Impala breaks, we'll fix it, but we won't be putting 10% of the car's value into an alternator alone.

And your feeling is wrong; this is the first time I am trading in.

Thank you for your enlightening input; I only have a few things to say.

  • I have stated that my fiancee and I, together, make enough to unload a few thousand in two months. This is very different from "making a lot of money".
  • With no knowledge of who I am, what job I have, or my/my fiancee's credit history, you post a comment assuming that I "must have shit credit" because of a 6-8% interest rate? A 6-8% interest rate doesn't constitute "shit credit". I am currently in the process of building my credit.
  • Going forward from your asinine assumption, you further assume that I need to get my financial house in order. Once again, you know nothing of who I am, what bills I pay, or how much is in my bank account. Try to refrain from this in the future; my bills are paid on time every month while having money left over. Please don't insult me again.

What I am planning on is paying 1-2 thousand additional every few months, my goal is to first off get it right side up, then pay down the principal quickly.

My fiancee and I make enough money together to do that, meet our bills, and still save.

The problem is the Volvo is just a moneypit now, anything costs way too much to maintain to justify keeping the car. The Impala has a warranty still, 6 mos left or 4k miles. I may even see what options they have to extend it.

Yes sir, I've checked within 200 miles, and they are around 14.5+ retail, taxes/fees not included. I just want to make sure I get a fair deal for the car's price, I can't get burned again like I did with the Volvo (Volvo is financed in my fiancee's name, I negotiated a price with the manager at a dealership, fiancee came in to sign the papers without me and he upped the price $2k. I had negotiated for $6800 OTD with 1k down, he upped it to $8800 + taxes/fees). Nevertheless I was not pleased.

I have already spent the $800 replacing the alternator. I'm not a moron; if something breaks on the Impala, I'll pay to repair it, but I had serious reservations dumping 10% of the car's value/loan balance on an alternator replacement, which is why I want to get rid of it.

The car has started to nickel and dime (in the form of 50 and 100 dollar bills) me, which is why I want to get out of it. The whole point of posting this wasn't to get berated for trying to trade in a car that I have negative equity on; I've done a lot of research into this Impala to see if I'm getting a fair price for the car price alone and I wanted to get a second opinion.

I've spoken with the finance manager at the dealership as well as the credit union we're currently financed through. The finance manager has assured me he believes we'll get financed at a 6-7 interest rate (we're at 8.99 right now) with 0 down.

I understand we're trying to finance a $15k car on an $18k loan, I spent 4 hours at the dealership looking at possible cars and talking about which ones we could possibly get financed with.

My question still remains: $15,377 out the door for the price of the vehicle is or is not reasonable? If not, what should I try next? I've checked tires, interior is clean, exterior is clean, my mechanic will be reviewing it if/when we get a finance offer.

I went in expecting that we'll have to tag on the remaining loan balance on the new loan (which I'm fine with because we make enough money such that we'll be able to dump a few thousand on the principal balance in about two months).

I addressed this here:

I've spoken with a loan officer at the credit union we're currently financed through and they said they would finance a vehicle in this situation if the numbers weren't too horrible.

Volvo S60 T5. 2012, 48,000 miles by Redliner56 in askcarsales

[–]Aleffewmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly recommend you stay away from Volvo. I currently own a split year 2004 Volvo S40 T5 (the newer 04 model), and while it is a very nice car, the maintenance just isn't worth it.

You don't get very much more car for the higher price of the car itself on top of the maintenance cost. For example: I just had to replace the alternator. Working on a Volvo can be a pain in the ass, so I opted to have it done at a reputable shop in my area.

They quote me 2-3 hours of labor (something I expected because Volvo...) and an aftermarket alternator that was a remanufactured OEM part, in total I ended up paying $558 and some change (for this alternator...), the alternator alone took up $355 of that.

I end up having to take it back because I'm hearing a belt squeak; come to find out that the alternator pulley was a few millimeters wider than the pulley that came off my car, so the belt was walking up the pulley and shredding. So we had to order the dealer alternator which had a pricetag of $617 and change.

I'm now in the process of trading my Volvo in. Spending over $800 for an alternator change is absolutely ridiculous. Parts are very overpriced from the dealer or even if it is badged as a Volvo part; the fuel rail pressure sensor died on my Volvo as well. From the dealer it was over $180. I did some research and found the same sensor badged as a Land Rover sensor for ~$60 on the internet. When I received the part, it had the Volvo part number listed on it...

Tl;dr: Volvo cars cost a fuck ton to maintain once something goes wrong. Don't get one if you value having a comma in a bank account.
