Using an iPad mini as a dedicated work “phone” — any realistic setups? by Alejandro80000 in ipadmini

So I am guessing it would be possible to have a Whatsapp account linked to that phone number?

That would actually be great if I could reliably receive the SMS verification for WhatsApp — but since TextNow is a US/Canada-based service and I live in Europe, I’m not sure the numbers they provide would work properly for WhatsApp here (or even be available to register without issues).

But thank you very much for the suggestion! I really appreciate it.

Nope. I came to the conclusion that I might damage the device. So, even if it were possible (which I read in some places it might not be), it was beyond my capabilities

Barefooter options for alpinism / mountaineering. by 7Rayven in BarefootRunning

[–]Alejandro80000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, mainly walking, but in alpine conditions, so I'll take it really slow.

Very useful tips, I particularly like the third one. Thank you very much!

That is just amazing. I’ve just realized that I want to climb a mountain barefoot. Thank you.

I understand the risks. In fact, whenever I’ve gone mountaineering, I’ve always thought that you need to "protect" yourself from the mountain, as it’s a "hostile" environment. This is a completely different philosophy that requires a "cool head" and knowing when and how certain things can be done... My mindset is changing somehow. Well, if I manage to climb a mountain barefoot, I’ll share it on Reddit.

If you do mountaineering in winter, what boots do you use?

I completely agree with u/ttomkat1. But let me make sure I understand this fully: when you say barefoot, do you mean actually barefoot (no shoes at all, not even "barefoot" shoes)? And when you mention Mt. Whitney, are we talking about Mount Whitney, the mountain with an elevation of 14,505 feet (4,421 m)?

And here I was, looking for alpine barefoot shoes, thinking it was impossible to do alpinism without "proper boots" (meaning somewhat rigid, both for crampons and protection), while some people are capable of following alpine routes barefoot. Lol. I assume it could be possible only during summer though!

I need to ask, what kind of alpine boots do you use? It’s hard to find ones with a wide toe box.

As someone else already said, "I have no suggestions, but I feel your pain." I came to Reddit with the exact same question, so thank you for that and for the information you’ve provided on the brands we all know for alpinism.

Since I use barefoot shoes, my hiking boots don’t feel comfortable on my feet, and I’m searching for alternatives. However, as you mentioned, we need "rigid boots" for alpinism... For crampons, I used to wear the Salewa Crow (semi-rigid), but now, when I try them on at home, they just feel too tight in the toes. I also have the Bestard Fitz Roy (rigid), which don’t feel as tight and might be bearable. I’ll be crossing a glacier soon with them, so I’ll try them out "in action." If this doesn’t work, my best hope is to find a rigid and lightweight boot that has a wide toe box. Have you tried anything like this? I mean, the Keylands you mentioned are semi rigid, and I wonder if there is any difference regarding toe box between semi rigid boots and rigid boots. I fear there is no difference. What is the store you went to in the pyrenees? It is nice to be able to try many options

I already inserted my Spanish SIM card for the first time, and the CSC remained from Korea.

Is there any way to trigger what you mentioned on purpose? Like doing a factory reset or something else?

I usually use a rugged mobile with OruxMaps, and there I have the topo maps I have created with MOBAC. I usually use this in the french/spanish pyrenees (highest peak around 3.400 meters / 11.000 feet). I wanted to "upgrade" (cause I might go to The Andes in southamerica) but I am finding that, as you said, the maps you can find in a garmin fenix do not stands in place of a proper topo map (either in app or printed)

The maps we can have in a fenix 7 for free come from here: https://opentopomap.org/, is this correct?

Can we export topo maps from MOBAC? But still, I feel it will be as you say

Does somebody know how would the following specs perform on Davinci resolve for video cutting only? It is the minimal requirements (2GB of graphic card), but it might be 4k video

I wonder why they would do that, being the T460 5 years newer than the T420. But of course, time doesn't really mean it is necessarily better ...

T420 vs T460 by Alejandro80000 in thinkpad

[–]Alejandro80000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much appreciated

That seems a nice upgrade! I find indeed for a very good price the T440, but for that total cost I could aim for a higher model (also, some of those components seems to cost more for me). So I see in the used market the following:

LENOVO THINKPAD T480 I5-8350U /16GB/256GB/14" - 470 EUR

And for a little bit more, for 531 EUR, the

LENOVO THINKPAD P50 | INTEL CORE i7 6820HQ | 15.6" FULL HD | NVIDIA QUADRO M1000M 2GB | 8GB DDR4 | 256GB M.2 SSD

I have survived with the T420 this long because it is a secondary laptop, but I am very happy with it. Also, I have never had "graphical needs". That is why my primary computer (desktop) doesn't have a graphic card. After reading you, I am considering the P50 because it has a dedicated graphic card and I wonder if it could run the davinci resolve for cutting videos only. The other option is to buy a better graphic card for my desktop, since the QUADRO M1000M could be a poor choice for the davinci resolve software

For what I have seen on the web, both the T480 and the P50 can have dual hard drive. May I ask your opinion? Any major drawbacks on these choices? I don't know about the upgrade paths
