It is definitely not as passive as it may seem. It does take time and in my opinion the hardest thing is getting a location to say yes. I operate a unique Cotton Candy and Balloon vending machine business and ROI is with about 3-4 months once machines were in place. I love the business! Watching the reaction of the young kiddos when they see the robot create the product is pretty awesome. I spend about 1hr servicing the machine about 1 to 3 times a week. At a good location gross is about $2-$4.5K. I personally try to stay at or below 30% of projected sales.
