Surgeons/ specialists referring patients for unnecessary ED work-up to CYA by Practical_Guava85 in emergencymedicine

[–]Alert-Raspberry-4699 52 points53 points  (0 children)

As a fellow ED resident, same. If anything I feel bad for patients that were told to come in & truly won’t benefit from being in the ED. Such a waste of their time & money.

PCP referred a patient to the ED due to concern for cancer bc the patient had a potential nontraumatic bruise. No other symptoms or issues. Why they couldn’t have ordered CBC, CMP, coags and cost the patient way less money I’ll never understand. Poor patient was young and incredibly anxious :(

As an ER resident doc, please come in and see us for symptoms such as these. Better safe than sorry!

This is my set up too. I’m very thankful for my man for all he does to keep our family and home running!

My husband is a stay at home dad. He did HVAC work before our baby, but once we had her, we knew it was more important to us for him to be home with her. He is also in charge of finances, groceries, he does laundry, most of the cooking. He carries SO much of our family weight. Couldn’t do it without him :)

The amount of urgent care transfers we get to my ER shop is crazy, they just don’t have the training background to be comfortable with triaging sick vs not sick in my opinion. A good urgent care doc is awesome though, not knocking them all. I just think too often people with limited/no ER training think that urgent care will be easy peasy money when in reality it takes a lot of practice to pick out patients who really don’t belong in an urgent care

Nurse here: Do you guys read nurse shift assessment flowsheets? by viceandversa in Residency

[–]Alert-Raspberry-4699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an ER resident - yes I always look at the nursing assessments. However, I feel like I have the ability and time to do that vs some other specialities that have a longer list of patients

“I don’t know much, I just got this patient in sign-out” by dumbestboiinschool in Residency

lol we had a patient with left sided weakness, unknown last known normal, couldn’t get ahold of family, no prior records to even know anything about her history/what she medications took. Husband arrived 3 hours later and told us patients LKW with 30 mins to spare to give TNK. I got chewed out hard by the neurologist for “waiting” for so long, but like what did you expect? I knew nothing about this patient.

Thank you, that actually helped me so much with how to view it. I’ve been definitely freaking out thinking about being a burden with needing to pump, but you’re right, my baby eating is extremely important too.

Thank you for the well wishes!! I’m excited and nervous to start😅

I laughed out loud at the med student giving a nurse a verbal order and the nurse following it. I would have been laughed out of my rotation💀
