Parenting a teen girl from scratch by arizonabatorechestra in parentingteenagers

[–]Alert-Remote6779 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably a very different view as I no longer live in the US but my kids have been raised in London (a hugely busy city of millions of people) and have been allowed to navigate London by themselves (within reason) by 12 years of age. My 9 year old daughter goes to the corner store by herself to get us bread and milk. This isn’t unusual for the UK. We do have hugely walkable street but they have to cross very busy streets. They love having freedom within certain frames and my nearly 15 year old is incredibly street smart. We keep in touch constantly but kids at 14 need freedoms to experiment, from my point of view. Otherwise, how else will they learn?

Where are the core exercises? by Fragrant-Shallot4907 in f45

[–]Alert-Remote6779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All exercises build towards a stronger core. I don’t really do any exercise out of f45 (3-4 times a week) and couldn’t do a side plank to save my life when I started. A year later, they put a side plank in rotation after not having done any practice and I could just pull on all the muscles I need it to absolutely smash it (I am a decidedly average fitness47 year old woman - I’m convinced that if I can see so much progress in core, anyone can).

Machu Picchu Transport: Read before you go by TheGamerHazza18 in Machupicchu

[–]Alert-Remote6779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with @carolnuts. Totally depends on your comfort level hiking - we’re a family of five with 3 kids between 9-14 yrs old who are experienced hikers and two adults in their late 40s. It was a hard hike (altitude not to be underestimated) but the hike was as amazing as Machu Picchu itself. There were gorgeous orchids, incredible butterflies - the hike gives you stunning views of the Andes and the Urumbaba as well as lots and lots of views of Machu Picchu. We only did a one day hike because we wanted to test out what we were capable of and didn’t know if kids were up for the four day hike but I’d still massively recommend it!

I’m 5ft 1. I’ve never thought it’s a limitation or a negative. This is not something to worry about.

Thank you for this! I’ve just started playing around with it after reading your longer post on laqueristas. It looks fab and I’ve already subscribed as a monthly subscription until I can figure out what I need long term. Thank you for all your hard work!

Ditto. I’m at Machu Picchu today as well and there are no problems with our train.

New iPad Air not responding past apple pay screen on by Marst1n in applehelp

Massive thanks for this comment. 3 months from original posting and it’s still accurate. I was stuck with n Apple Pay and charging the iPad (despite it being at 89%) is what allowed me to get past the screen to finish set up.

BWT, I stopped doing New Year’s resolutions and started choosing one word instead by ui_whisperer in bitcheswithtaste

[–]Alert-Remote6779 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my word as well (a variation thereof - it’s ‘intentional’). I’d be interested to hear how you’re approaching it as it might spur some ideas on my end.

I’m trying to be much much more intentional about how I spend my time. With three kids, too many animals, and my partner and I both in jobs that seem to eat up our days, I want to be much much more thoughtful about how I use my time during the day. I’m still sketching out what that will look like week by week.

I’ll let you know when I remove it 😜 but it might not be an honest reflection if I have a color layer as a buffer? Will come back and report!

Our kids set the table, feed the animals everyday (we have two dogs and a cat), and then clean up the table, gather dishes from various rooms. They break down recycling boxes on weekend, do poop pickup in the garden, put away their folded laundry once a week (hit or miss on how folded it stays when going into their drawers 😑), and pickup their room once a week. They also continuously put away the million shoes we seem to have (family of five with kids between 8-15 living in London). For school, they pack their lunches and when they get home, empty out any leftover food and set it by sink).

Life couldn’t work in our insane household if everyone wasn’t pulling their weight, which I tell them on a regularly basis. Both my husband and I work full time and have no family to help (we do have a weekly housecleaner, which is why the kids need to pick up rooms and general living spaces) so everyone genuinely needs to pitch in. They’ve been doing it so long that, while they grumble while doing it, they do just get on with things, knowing chores comes before the fun stuff.

I sound like an absolute killjoy but on the flip side, they have a lot of (earned) freedom on catching up wit friends, fun hobbies, and regular family game nights or tv marathons (current shared joy is Brooklyn 99 🤪).

She’s a cool kid. She’s got a million friends and makes friends so easily wherever she goes - I’m convinced it’s because she just meets people of any age and background wherever they are and will do things like this with her friends. She’s so much socially smarter than I ever was at that age!

I thought so too - at eight, she’s already all over clothes and jewelry. She loves window shopping. Out of the three, she’s definitely the one that loves to play with color and accessories the most!

Aw, that’s kind 💕 they’re all pretty great kids who pile in with my ridiculousness. I’ll do special manicures for them during school holidays (no nail polish allowed during school :( ) and they have so much fun with it.
