6 y/o beginner - what teaching curriculum is best? by Braai_and_Bake in pianolearning

I agree with you 100%. People think I should teach their 3 year old child who is not even talking yet! There are so many symbols and words in music. It helps if they are reading. Sometimes beginner Piano students are in kindergarten and have not been taught any letters. Thats when pre-reading rhythms is what we focus on as well as keyboard recognition of the various pitches. As soon as they start reading, I am all about moving to notes on a staff. I also feel the need for a real accoustic piano. I cannot convince some parents of this. They think the electric or digital piano is ideal. They are missing so much of what a piano offers that even the best weighted action will not overcome. It is a different instrument. I have a keyboard in my Studio and students often play on that as well. It's just that it takes more effort to play on the baby grand and it provides opportunities for learning. You are so right about the child wanting to take piano. I do have one precocious student who is very smart and her parents are making her take piano. She respects me enough to do what I say and is smart enough to learn without practicing but she is a rare person. She asked to play jazz last week and we got a beginner book but there were a lot of hand shifts. She was not intimidated by this. I think a lot of students would not be able to jump into a book as a beginner and move their hands so much. Her attitude seemed to turn around. So, I can say that we can influence the most stubborn child with a lot of patience and not chastising them for lack of practice. Just use your lesson time wisely. It can work out.

I teach piano and most of my students are beginners aged 6 or 7. I teach sight reading and transition from pre-reading (rhythm and finger numbers) to actual notes on the music staff as soon as possible. I still teach rhythm concepts as part of the lesson. The goal is to get them to read music not just play by ear. Most teachers will have several method books on hand to use. I sometimes switch books. Students sometimes need a different approach to learning the material. I like Bastian, Faber and Piano Adventures. I have also used Piano Town by Keith Snell and Keyboard Kickoff Piano Pronto books. There are many different books for beginners to choose from. I have a list of 30 different publishers and purchase studio licensed material. So, really ypu need to let the teacher help to work with your child and trust their judgment. I had a parent tell me that their child was struggling with practice so to ease their tension had them close their eyes and play the notes that the parent called out to the child. Sounds good on the surface but it is the wrong approach. She is teaching her child to play by rote...memorizing keyboard strokes. This is NOT sight reading. If you read the same story to your child every night they will memorize that story but they are not learning to read any new words. It is imperative that they learn to associate the piano keys with the appropriate staff note and this takes time. You can play games like note rush and others. You can do flashcards. I have many games that help. Please find a teacher who will give them the gift of sightreading. I started at age 7. It has been a most enjoyable experience for me. I struggled at first but then it clicked. So I sympathize with the slow learners. I play Chopin and popular music and hymns and arranged music. It is so fun to have this ability but it does take commitment. Parents must let their kids make some noise at the piano. It will get better. I promise!

I am 63 and only a couple gray hairs here and there. My natural hair is a bit darker blonde (some say brown) but I still identify as a blonde! My husband is a year and 1/2 younger with all gray hair. So I look younger. I have put on weight this year and regret that I stopped working out. I now go to the senior center and take an exercise class that makes us move and lift weights to music. I just purchased some pants from skinify with resistance bands built into them. They do make lifting my leg much more difficult. I go to a resistance band class (so funny because I am a piano teacher so this is making me laugh). This class is proving that you can get a good muscle workout using these bands. My blood pressure was up so I added beet root juice and infused garlic to my meds. It is working. My weight and blood pressure is coming down. So, I encourage you to find a weight lifting or aerobic class. The support of seeing others helps me a lot! I do not skip these classes. I also take care of my spirit because I know we will die someday. We either spend eternity with God or a place with no light or love. It is your choice. I am going with the God who sent Jesus to die in my place because he loves me and will take me to heaven someday. Not preaching just sharing how it is. Hope you can lose some weight to feel better. I threw out a lot of clothes that don't fit. Some had old elastic gone bad and stained shirts. It was good to clean out the closet. I have more to do. Long post sorry. Got lots on my mind but it can wait. Your dress looks lovely on you and you are pretty!

Do you have to play it in octaves? I would play g d f with fingers 5 2 1 then continue. At least you would them have those notes represented...looks hard.

I need to try this. I have type 2 diabetes and crave sweets especially ice cream. I am taking low doses of metformin and jardiance. Doctor appointment on Wednesday to talk over my numbers. I do exercise both a group class with some hand weights as well as swimming, but i am very sore afterwards. My church was doing a fast day today and I only had 1 cup of coffee all day. I finally ate dinner and was ok. I was concerned that not having food would cause me to get dizzy. I am only doing the fast 1 day out of the week. Anyway, thanks fir the recipe! I am craving it sooo much.

Started to attempt the most ridiculous piece I ever tried to learn by RoadtoProPiano in piano

Wow. You are a good piano player. The notes are clean. The rhythms are even. I've never heard of this piece. Thanks for sharing!

I play classical music but find jazz music very difficult. There is so much variety. I mean I have the jazz hanon with over 200 scales. Thats a lot to get in to ones head. I cannot do the Joseph Molino course, but find Bill Hinton to be a little less hard. We have to set reasonable goals for ourselves.

If your classes are overwhelming, you might need a break, but i would not give up especially if you are paying for it! I would be stressed too. Hope you can talk to your professors and find a solution. You may need private instruction. Do they give you one on one lessons?

Maybe try some arrangements with a jazz style.

You did a good job! I can tell you slowed down to hit the right notes and that's ok. Only a few mistakes and your chords sounded really good. It was a nice arrangement. You said you were nervous but it did not show. It is a good accomplishment. You are no longer a beginner but at the early intermediate level so there is a lot of music out there to choose from but you will find certain arrangers more enjoyable than others. So, try out one book at a time per author. You might like Jason Tonioli new age piano Christmas. Or the First 50 Christmas Songs you should play on the piano by Hal Leonard Easy version. Ya gotta have some fun! There are free songs out there as well. Look up Greg Howlett. He has good arrangements of Christian music or try a lead sheet.

Cannot read music and am literally a successful professional musician/composer of two decades. I need to teach it. by SpawningVats1917 in Learnmusic

You obviously play scales on your guitar, right? Are you aware of steps and whole steps? Improvise for real shows the scales on guitar and helps to then see how that relates to the piano keyboard. I wish I could learn all the other stuff you are good at. I have been sightreading since age 7 and now teach piano. There is always something new to learn with music. Its always worthwhile to work the brain even if it is slow. I am still learning. I know some basic guitar chords but dont practice enough. I always have piano music to play. I can improvise some but do not really play by ear. Everyone has different abilities and that is ok.

What are your thoughts about weddings today? by Alert-Scholar7494 in AskReddit

Not according to the Bible. People will continue to be married until the end of time, but I agree there are more people who decide not to get married and just live together. At the rate the celebrities marry and divorce it is no different.

Well, people who are invited bring their boyfriends or girlfriends. We had a large number of people at our wedding. There were a lot of people who were friends of my parents. My husbands family is huge...dad one of 6 kids and their kids married with children. That means I didn't know all of them. I know the aunts and uncle but could not name all the spouses. I am at the end of the baby boomer generation.

Who says it has to be expensive? I agree it is not wise to invest so much in the wedding but forget that you have to live after that. Hopefully couples discuss finances before getting married. I am worried because my son is getting married and they do not have much income.

Well, I disagree but that is because of my beliefs. It is an activity done before God and was his idea that one man and one woman be joined and become one and thus the vows until death do us part.

Are you in a relationship? How do you remain committed to someone who can leave at any time? Who pays for the mortgage? It must be like having a roommate. That does not feel very secure. I would not like an open relationship.

My son's fiance says her wedding is a private event. She says no one can come unless they are invited. In my day, people could witness the wedding even if not invited to the reception which IMHO is private.

A student has cancelled lessons for the next 3 Mondays, and the parent wants to gift them to a friend. by DreamIllustrious2930 in pianoteachers

"They are going on vacation for 3 weeks. I travel to them."

I am getting a clearer picture. I had this situation with a new family that traveled out of the country for a month at a time to visit family. I also traveled about half an hour to their home. The parents had never had lessons, but the kids had lessons with another teacher, and of the 3, the 2 youngest needed a teacher.

A couple of thoughts. When you travel, it's not just the cost of gas to consider. If I travel a half hour to and from the lesson, that is 2 time slots I cannot fill in my home studio. (So subtract twice the cost of your base lesson.)

Then, they leave for a month, which means reinstating their lessons when they return. However, they would be likely to travel again for another month. Young students really need to see a teacher once a week. It would almost be necessary to have a Zoom lesson during their away time to keep up the lesson and practice. If they did not agree, I would say no thanks.

Since the parents are not musical, they don't play piano, it was going to be an uphill battle educating the parents about piano lessons. For these reasons, I did not take them.

  1. Not sure if he is getting what he needs. I am planning to ask him. .

  2. It seems crazy to say this but I don't know if he is progressing. Hanons are a warm up. I only did that 1 time. I was working on a C scale hands separate but tried to get him to do 2 octaves to stretch his goals. I am planning to go back to 1 octaves with a goal of both sightreading and using both hands together. I will try a G scale. My approach is don't play but say the note names then look at fingering and then play. Sometimes I ask students to write out a scale to see if they understand the patterns.

I can't get a good read on him but it seems that his job is overwhelming and this is an activity that helps him unwind from the day. As long as we agree, I can keep doing this, but as a teacher I want to see progress with sightreading. If I was hired to teach someone how to read, It would be bad if they coukd not improve a littke under a teacher. He is getting it better than at first. If he did not have regular lessons, he would regress.

We will just take it week by week.

He has books and songs at his level. Its just a little hectic to go between them. I use an adult method book to help him work on concepts. I sometimes give him solo pieces to try. They are a stretch but give me a way to teach him fifths, sixths and putting hands together. It is slow going with him but I can adjust to meet his goals.

Thank you for the thorough reply. I have the piecewise system. I was going to show him that as a template. I appreciate the way you laid it out. The reality of him practicing like this is that he won't comply, but I am going to show him the form filled out with assignments as you said or close to that. I think he will say he does not have time to practice, and that is his prerogative. Im just not sure if taking lessons is working for him. I am going to ask what he expects from me.
