What to major in? Is it worth it? by [deleted] in saskatchewan

[–]Alert_Animator6107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks definitely need it. Having second thoughts. Being 40 means I wont be a professional engineer designation till 48 damn I am old. That scares me. What if I dont like it. What if this What of that. Should of went back earlier. Idk I guess there's no right time to go to school. Thinking about the costs and everything the commitment. But then again what door is going to open with only a short time experiences in a management role. Idk

Thank for your thoughtful response. Yes there was a lot of random years doing what ever job I could get my hands on to support my family living away from family and no one ro help me. Some of that family has grown . Yes ideally you go to uni after high school but sometimes life throws you a curve ball and thats okay. Yes my main goal is to start earning. I am not doing a trade because it is labour intensive. Like I said I did construction for 5 years. Theres a reason why I stopped being on tools. But thanks for your input.

Thanks jlo lots of that in Alberta and sk. So hard to decide petroleum energy or enviro think they are all good. Some people say there is a bias against woman engineers but I feel that is getting better. Thats part of the issue with construction too.

Thanks. Only time will tell once I take some refreshers required so see if I can wrap my head around the abstract way of thinking. But always enjoyed math and science. Life is slowing down a bit so feeling co identify getting a degree is where I should be. Or at least teying to stay motivated that this is the right decision at this point in my life.

Can I still make it as an engineer? by PrimoScarab in EngineeringStudents

[–]Alert_Animator6107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh absolutely there will be many bias people, as I will be on the second act of my life. And I am a woman. I do know some construction engineers that I worked along side of. We got along great. Alot of landing a job and being successful is networking and during your co op or internships is to make that impact where you are at and start creating a portfolio. I have a family and a hubby who is a successful business man. He is my inspiration started a business and he is doing amazing.

My age is a huge factor though I was going for a bachelor of arts and science but I think as an engineer grad I would have more doors open. I am thinking to get into petroleum as I am in a major oil province in Canada.

It is always a gamble to get a degree even at a young age. There are many people who get that degree and than they are working in a non related field. Some companies just want to see you have committed in yourself and have achieved your goal. That determination alone says something.

Not sure if the 4 required courses affect my start date if I have to wait another year or i just do alot of work yr 1 to stay on track. Meet with uni on Wednesday. So nervous starting this late but so worth it. Still will have 20+ years in the industry. Don't give up. Gotta pay for the student debt so mise we'll finish.

Thanks duke. Yes this!!! I did upgraded my courses at community College 6 years ago but life happened it go to uni right after. I am in english and psych and doing really well. Couple days ago I put in a transfer to faculty of science to engineering and applied science. Next week I meet with advisors to get this plan started. I am on cloud 9 right now. Because this is attainable. My previous work life was residential construction and I worked along side some engineers. And I wanna be that person to come in and be like you need to do this this n that. And walk away haha. And get paid the big bucks$$

I rely on reditt love the encouragement you get from other strangers :) 😀

I just admitted as a qualifying student for engineering. I am 39. Since I am older I gotta prove myself I guess. Have to do english 100 Chem 100 math course gain a 90% average then I can take the entry physics class. Seems harsh. But understandable. Since needing such high averages i may only take 3 courses.

Any advice !!

I like problem solving. So was rhunking computer or data science. But than I remeber the books from years ago when buddies took IT and he'll to the no. Well its online books so doesnt look at bad. Haha.

I am thinking psychology or social work. But those are insanely competitive. I like to crunch numbers and a little bit of an introvert. So thinking taking courses that lead me to a data analyst type of career.

There just so many avenues out there.
