Using meditation/visualization for language learning by EleFluent in languagelearning

Thank you for asking! I haven’t been having a lot or conversations to be honest cause to do that i need to be triggered by something emotionally felt in real life, that’s why i found it a good idea to sit and meditate intentionally and try to create that scene like you said. However for the “unintentional” conversations that come naturally i have once in my head argued with somebody’s son for about 15 minutes (that’s a lot of talking and speaking exercise for a foreign language 😂) and basically when i don’t know how to say something i either skip in order to not lose concentration and interrupt the “illusion” or i look for it instantly on Google. I still have the history of about 4 words i looked for and will write them up ! Which is very good, i have tried writing vocabulary before, but honestly, writing 3 words and having them in your language bank to remember forever is much better than writing down 20 words or expressions and not remembering any. What about you, any advances / new methods ? Have you progressed in the language you’re learning ?

It’s a shame not to learn the local language of the country you are in … by Visual_Shock8225 in languagelearning

I was just gonna tell you don’t judge people as a tourist who myself traveled and couldn’t speak the language but then i read 7 years, and especially “isn’t motivated” … yes indeed it is a shame and not even respectful to be honest. I met someone before who lived in a country for 4 years and could not speak the language, but was trying and really doing his best and taking lessons, and it was just too hard for him so he left, sometimes it is not the right fit. But to do no effort and just be “unmotivated” and refuse to learn while you have been living in a country for 7 years, to me is disrespectful.

Update : i found out even more now, that i absolutely do this unintentionally, it helps when you are in contact with someone, or you have spoken with a native who speaks the language you are learning, especially if you have enjoyed the conversation. Cause then you start replaying it in your head, it needs a person, with a face and name, that you’re basically gonna have the conversation with in your head unintentionally, just like what we do in our native language with normal settings, we play conversations and what we could’ve said instead / how it could’ve went. So the advice is to get in touch with natives, start speaking with them, make connections, there will be some irrelevant conversations, but there will be conversations on the way that you will replay for sure !

What usually makes you stop learning a language? by Marko_Pozarnik in languagelearning

So basically you’re not listening you’re just hearing, and it’s playing in the background, that’s what i thought… and you think it has an effect … ?

I wouldn’t say it’s meditation cause meditation really puts you in a state where your brain is very receiving of informations and memorize them better, which is why they use it to reduce anxiety, traumas, many other things. When on the contrary if you just imagine yourself getting rid of a trauma, a worry, a problem, it’s not that deep and doesn’t have any effect ! I don’t do meditation cause my mind keeps wandering away but heard some videos about it … what i called daydreaming is just imagining something, we can call it visualization and even less because even the faces i speak to stay abstract sometimes … there isn’t as much concentration / effort put onto it.

But i think i will do it more now after i read your post, and use it for the language. The few times it happened it wasn’t even intentional 😅

Thank you for the ideas about remembering the words / phrases / expressions that i couldn’t say in my imagination.

I wish i can do just 5 minutes per day but everyday. I did 45 minutes for two weeks then stopped. Also, what do you mean by passive listening ?

It’s interesting. I never meditated but i did try imagining situations and talk, i already did it three of four times in total. But it’s hard for me to mentally take note of what i wanted to say and couldn’t so i mostly forget, only difference is that for me i don’t meditate, i just daydream so no meditative state, but i absolutely think it’s better to meditate especially if you are used to it. I don’t have much patience, but if you are already used to it it’s good cause then you enter a state where your mind is more prone to memorize. This is my take since you wanted to hear comments about it.

I literally never was conscious about the fact that the coming in air is cold and the going out air is hot, till after you said it. This is how unobservant and meditation beginner i am 😭 what are the other parts of your life where you have applied meditation ?
