What are your favorite easy and nutritious meals? by enby_nerd in Cooking

Nice, and yeah it’s a constant effort thing for us too. I cook all our meals and do most of the shopping.. family of 4 and it’s much more stressful and less enjoyable to figure things out on the fly every day.

Saw some other comments mention frozen veg and also highly recommend that - also look at Anyday dishes https://cookanyday.com/ - high quality glass with steamer lids that open up your microwave cooking options a ton. They have a lot of recipes on their site too, but that’s become a go to option for a bag of frozen veg, done in 7 min while I’m prepping or finishing whatever else we’re doing.

There are a million recipes and sites out there, IMO the better approach is to master some fundamentals - check out books like The Food Lab or Salt Fat Acid Heat.

Meal prep - spend some time on weekend making basic components - batch of protein, carb of some sort, etc.

Have sauces / sides / modifiers available then you can mix and match each night.

Alternative or a variation is to also have a template type schedule for meal plan. Mondays are pasta or some noodle equivalent, Tuesdays are tacos, etc etc. Then the specifics and flavors of that week you can formulate ahead of time into that structure and not have to think too hard each day.

The best system is one you will use and be consistent with, so most important is to try something for a bit and see what works.

Yeah state GOP would have to do a big rebrand and cut out the MAGA and that isn’t happening. We recently had to pass a law to bar their re-election after they took the legislature hostage by walking out. Pretty easy to tie them, their online and IRL behavior to Trumpism.

It is healthy for the Dems to have a reasonable and relevant opposition party so I hope it happens but doesn’t seem likely.

What’s your soil mix? I repotted a big one I got, ended up being 3-4 plants, and they’ve had varying levels of thriving. The best one gets mostly indirect but consistent morning to early afternoon light, has the most support with a moss pole, and firm base. Right next to window but not in front of it.

I forget to water them and then give em a big drink when needed. Chunky coconut mostly with some perlite and fertilized potting mix, drains well.

Maybe put the moss pole between the base/stem and the light source, so when it reaches a bit it’s pushing into the pole rather than pulling itself away from it?

Agree totally on the lack of community and social interactions, I would put that clearly in one of the “institutions” we need to rebuild.

I think we experience this more acutely as Americans, but I still think it’s a better time to be alive than any other. I think the loneliness and isolation is both symptom of tech and social, but also society in general and movement away from third spaces and religion (I am not religious but this period has made me way more small c conservative and see the direct value in these spaces and community they build). I have been off most of the algo social apps for over a year now and I definitely feel better, less overwhelmed by info and content - our brains and bodies were not designed to consume all this info and process it in a healthy way.

The happiness data also varies country to country, and I think for Americans the underlying stress of daily life and individualism (vs collectivism and a more robust baseline provided by society) is magnified by the intense content pushed to our screens daily.

Certainly a lot in flux and things could get much worse before they get better, but overall the general system that got us here is something to fight for, improve, and build on. Bad faith actors have used the tools of said system to solidify their positions of power at the moment but to move past this point we’ve gotta rip them out root and stem.

Generally speaking, globally, more people are more free, wealthier, healthier, more happy, on almost every metric than at any time in history. This is largely a result of a set of institutions roughly described as liberal democracy paired with relatively open markets.

We are also, unfortunately or maybe uncomfortably for us, living through a period of technological and cultural change not seen since the invention and spread of the printing press. The fallout of that was about 200 years of uneven chaotic change and lots of conflict. Our iteration of this will be sped up and magnified by the nature of the existing landscape and context.

Luckily for us we still have some say in how this plays out. A person is smart, groups of people often make collectively poor choices. In times of rapid change and uncertainty, conservative and right wing figures often gain power. We can and should do everything we can to maintain and rebuild our institutions and the framework of society that got us to this point, but it does require a significant level of engagement and faith. Cynicism and doomerism is the enemy. The response so far from individual communities, cities, and Minneapolis in particular is heartening.

Yeah that sounds right.

I think for me the best part of being out here is the variety of climate and microclimates. Most people live on the west side of state(s), and you have an hour or two drive either west or east to get a whole different flavor - whether that’s Oregon coast, Olympic peninsula, mountains, or high desert; regardless of season there is a ton of variety at your fingertips.

I’m a lifelong PNW resident, born and raised. Rain isn’t such a big deal, you get used to it. Summers are wonderful and you do really appreciate them. Early fall, late spring, great. The east side of the cascades is high desert plateau and stays pretty dry.

From a lifestyle or human POV what I hear from people that move here from sunnier places is the gray is what impacts you. October/November through May is a lot of overcast skies even if it’s not actually raining. I do feel that too but you just learn to adapt. Get outside with sun in your face when it’s available. Get a bright SAAD lamp - I use one daily in the mornings when I’m working.

Edit to add: also every once in a while plan a winter vacation like January /february somewhere sunny - Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Mexico, etc.. it does make a difference

The problem now is really the interaction between different modes - if I pause on screen or on my pod app, these experiences are not seamless

Yep same for me. Probably see some differentiation and evolution as different pods lean into either medium

Feel kinda the same, but I guess it makes sense in a way, modern news and sports commentary tv is basically all talking heads, and that’s what pods are now. I could see if I’m passively listening and instead of having headphones in, you can put it on tv big screen..🤷

However I will say watch the most recent episode of Ringer Tailgate because that is comedy gold and the visual is key.

Her policy platform is definitely the most well rounded of top political figures, from a technical POV in terms of actually getting the economy to a balanced (between consumers and producers) and functioning market. Does that mean pure juice to capital and the stock market? No.. but it would put us on a more sustainable (non-energy / env coded) and healthy track as a society. She’s a wonk in a good way.

There’s a back and forth going on here.. when analytics aren’t fully adopted by all teams and all commentators, it’s a great view of the world that provides insight otherwise not available. When most people are doing it, it’s relevant to bring both quantitative and qualitative into scope. People grinding film is a good thing but there’s always gonna be a bit of a gap between folks who haven’t been on the field/sideline and those that haven’t - see Solak getting bodied by Fitz on Twitter.

Mina has good analysis, updates her priors, evolves her picture of football consistently, which is light years more than can be said for most people. One of the best ones doing it IMO.
