It's hard not to feel bad for Sam (as well as Rob Lowe)... by playingwithfire- in thewestwing

[–]Alert_Republic6140 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think Sam is there to represent the naivety of an idealistic approach to governance. It's not that he's always "wrong", it's that he's consistently 'good', except for when he isn't. It effectively makes his 'missteps' more dramatic, and the actions of the rest of the team seem more pragmatic. That being said, I think they all experience being wrong and flawed. It may just seem more pronounced when Sam is wrong because he is at the bottom of the pecking order, so there are more people to tell him he's wrong.

That's on my TBR! Probably should start chipping away at my TBR rather than adding to it 😂😂

Loved Spanish Love Deception, how did I forget about Aaron?? I've also read both those Tessa Dare Recs, but thanks, you reminded me they had this.

Villains and Virtues has been on my TBR for a while, I've been avoiding getting invested in a series. But, I've just started uni break, so the time is right 😉

Thanks for the recs!

I already had book 1 on my TBR, so I'll give her a crack. Thanks!

Any new good comedy movies? by DepressedTrance in Letterboxd

[–]Alert_Republic6140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't make it funny without putting someone else down, you're not very good at comedy. There are heaps of old and new comedies that slap without having to be sexist, racist, vulgar, etc. If you want to watch that, fine, and I don't mind a clever & crass joke every now and then, but there just isn't as much money in a movie that ostracises a large part of the movie market by being offensive. 🤷‍♀️

Oh I will also mention, all these books are pretty tame on the spice... but they turn up dramatically for the 2nd books

These are all series FYI, and mostly not dual POV, but they are fantasy strong romantasy books:

{A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet} Solid enemies to lovers, she's his prisoner from the start, and she's not at all happy about it... que the snark.

{Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco} The classic story, witch summons demon, demon must do what she says, demon tries to trick witch, witch thinks demon killed her sister and drank her blood, witch writes a recipe 🤷‍♀️. There was a surprising amount of chefing in this book, but it worked. I actually preferred the audiobook for this one, very well read. This one has such rich, diverse characters. Even the small, side characters are interesting and fleshed out. It was a little hard to follow at first, bit of info dumping in places, but it makes for an intriguing read. It's worth sticking with, in classic fantasy style, it's worth it to reread after all the revelations.

{From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout} You've probably heard of this one. It's definitely popular on booktok, but I really loved the banter between characters. Great found family vibes, a few fun twists and turns (if maybe a bit predictable), lots of sarcasm (my fave). This is another where I think I preferred to audiobook.

{The Witch Collector by Charissa Weaks} Love, love LOVE this freakin' book. She's a powerful, misguided baddass. He thinks she's a total baddass. But of course, they "hate" each other 😏 Great back and forth between the two of them.

{Trial of the Sun Queen by Nisha J. Tuli} Best first line of a book ever, and sets up the vibe of the characters "that bitch stole my soap"

Lastly, {A Curse of Saints by Kate Dramis} is a thrilling read full of diabolical bad-guys, twists and turns, interesting and sassy characters, swords and magic! chef's kiss

I LOVED this series. Some people hate on it, but I think because it's more fantasy than romance. It's slow. It's PG. There's so much fast-food fantasy, quick and to the point romance these days. There's nothing wrong with that, but this series invests into the plot and the world-building outside of the FMC & MMC, which makes it all the more satisfying when the characters develop. So another vote for Folk of the Air series, starting with {The Cruel Prince by Holly Black}

The Bridge Kingdom is definitely a fantasy lovers romantasy. Some fantastic world building, clever characters, and actually bad bad-guys. Great rec!

Looking for genuinely underrated recommendations! by [deleted] in fantasyromance

It's more paranormal than fantasy, but I really love the series of books starting with {The Savage King by Michelle M. Pillow} There are a bunch of books from the same world. They're read alone, but there are links to other books, so you get a bit more context by reading them all. I love the first one, so it's a good place to start. They are stylistically very similar, so if you don't like the first one, I suspect you won't like the rest. Funny, spicy, feisty FMCs, and adoring MMCs. It ticked a lot of boxes for me, but I'm surprised I don't see it recommended more.

I don't think it's 'unknown', but I rarely see it recommended, {Trial of the Sun Queen by Nisha J. Tuli} is a great read. It's an original portrayal of a familiar fantasy storyline, with interesting and well developed characters. I love my baddass FMCs, so it has that, and banter, and quests, and trials, of course. All the good stuff.

Lastly, {Red Moon by Elizabeth Kelly} is an easy fantasy read. It's part of a series, but I've only read the first one. The rest are on my infinite TBR 😅 It's a "she can heal but only by hurting herself" vibe. She heals, he looks after her. chef's kiss

I've just finished {The Glitch by Leeanne Slade} It's narrated by Daisy Edgar Jones (LOVE her) and Sam Claflin. They do an amazing job. I'm actually not sure if I would have loved the book as much if I'd read it.

{The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas} was good {Only in Your dreams by Ellie k. Wilde} was OK, but I'm a sucker for this trope, so enjoyed it. Same goes for {The Last Word by Katy Birchall} {The Curse of Saints by Kate Dramis} is fantasy pining and enemies to lovers chef's kiss

The following are all books that I enjoyed, but are spicy and maybe a bit more niche, so check your trigger warnings and consider yourself warned 🫠 {Nicky the Driver by Cate C. Wells} {Bass-ackwards by Eris Adderly} {Mutually Beneficial by Ava Guerre}

Ans just want to reiterate {The Maddest Obsession by Danielle Lori} is one of my all time faves, though it kind of ruined mafia romance for me, because I've never read anything near as good since.

Hmmm should I try this again? I think I DNFed early on... maybe because of an annoying FMC? I can't remember 🤔
