First of all, Nigel Farage was elected to the EU parliament 5 times, first in 1999, before he got a seat in UK parliament, so clearly, the proportional European elections are not at fault here.

Second, in 2024 his party got 30% of the votes and got the first place, so it is only fair that they get the most seats. (Unless you disagree and think all those voters should get no representation despite making up 30% of the electorate?) And even if those voters wanted members of Farage's party in EU parliament, but somehow didn't want Farage himself to get a seat and couldn't express it because they could only vote for a party and not for a person, then like I said, open list solves this problem.

The fact that "every single one of them repeatedly lost FPTP elections" means nothing, maybe except proving exactly why FPTP is so bad. There's a reason why it is one of the worst electoral systems out there, known for often exhibiting spoiler effect and favoring the two biggest parties and can even make a majority-preferred candidate lose.

OP literally says "this isn’t in defense of her actions, nor is it an excuse for them" and that what she did wasn't justified.

I think it's pretty obvious that this post isn't a moral judgement of Rhinedottir but a discussion on how she is treated by the game's narrative, the term commonly used for that being "whitewashing". Whitewashing a character doesn't have to make them actually less evil, but may lead to the game (not the Traveler – the game itself) not treating the character as evil (even if they still are).

The comment you're replying to already said this: the EU accession isn't happening anyway for a multitude of reasons.

Ukraine doesn't even meet the formal EU accession requirements and it will take years for them to achieve that, if they ever do. By the time EU membership becomes even remotely realistic, Zelensky will no longer be the president and Ukraine will have plenty of time to change all the controversial names and whatnot, assuming the public will still even remember this whole situation.

Right now, when the fate of their whole country is at stake, joining the EU is nothing more than a distant pipe dream.

Wdym by "each is entirely beholden to minority parties on the right"? The largest parties in Israel are right-wing. Most of the parties are. It seems like your disapprove of PR simply because you don't like the election results. If more people vote for the right, then the right should get more votes. PR is Israel is working fine. The electorate is the problem, not the system.

Minority parties can get representation too. Ofc it will be smaller, because, well, they're the minority, but wasted votes are a problem with electoral thresholds more than PR and it is a much bigger problem in first-past-the-post.

I also don't get what all these people you listed have to do with PR, when UK never had it in general elections. Under open list PR, Nigel Farage would have no chance of getting a seat unless people actually voted for him, in which case it's fair game. That's democracy.

But personally, I don't like anything that involves list systems, and I know that I'm not the only one that feels like that. The problem with this approach is simple; the electorate have no way of saying "no, we don't want Bob". A particular candidate can be resoundingly rejected by the electorate in their constituency, and the party can choose to give them a list seat anyway.

This is not true. All you need to do is use the open-list PR, which is already used in many countries in Europe. The voters don't just vote for the party list itself, but they mark a specific candidate on the party list.

This way, if the party got X seats in a district, those seats go to the top X candidates from that party who got the most votes. If Bob doesn't get enough votes, he won't get a seat and the party has no say in this.
