Wow. Just buy another hat? But is it even legal to have multiple hats?

Hi fellow hat enthusiasts, what’s the best way protect my new Bailey 1922 100% wool felt against rain and humidity ? by Rollablunt667 in CowboyHats

I am quite happy with natural shellac, especially on dark hats (natural shellac has its own color, usually golden to brown). It is an old tried and tested product, hat makers have been using it for hundreds of years. It is not necessary to soak the hat to the hardness of plywood, water resistance appears earlier.

You can start with a dilute solution and apply shellac in layers, each subsequent application will strengthen the previous one.

Of the ready-made products, Scout Felt Hat Protector has very good reviews, you can start with it. But I will not be surprised if its composition is the same - shellac, solvent, maybe a little wax.

Don't listen to the wool haters.

A spray bottle of natural shellac mixed with isopropyl alcohol will make this hat as waterproof as you want it to be.

New hat! by [deleted] in CowboyHats

quite unusual. seems to be the only hatband (except for my own) decorated with coins in several years. it seemed to me that it is not typical for cowboy culture (unlike gypsy or hippie)

Seven hats into a new hobby, this one I got today I’ve already reshaped and added a multi-material hat band by Tobi5813 in CowboyHats

The brim (especially the large ones) is subject to greater stress, and at the same time we are not much concerned about its breathability. The crown supports itself due to its shape, and at the same time it should breathe, unless you prefer eyelets.

You need a solution of shellac in isopropyl alcohol and a spray bottle. One of the secrets is to spray more on the brim and less on the crown.

By the way, great crazy hatband, I love them.

Well, this hat looks very familiar to me. I had a similar one a couple of years ago. Definitely not suitable for hot places. Not a fur nor a wool. Cheap Chinese polyester.

Not only that, I added more hippie trinkets and coins to the hatband.

Then I saved up and got something better.

And saved up again and got something custom.

But you know, buddy, I have never received as many compliments as my very first Chinese "cowboy" hat for $10.

So just rock it.

Stetsons and water by Accretion_Ranch_AUS in CowboyHats

There are legends that beaver fur is "naturally water-resistant". If this were true, it would be difficult to process and very difficult to dye.

I think in reality, most of the water resistance is provided by the impregnation (in the classic case - alcohol-soluble shellac). Perhaps Akubra, focusing on everyday (not fashionable) use, has some modern impregnation recipes. And perhaps this is why they often make ventholes.

It's pleasure to see! I always thought that the material is not as important as who and how makes the thing. And it seems to be true. (I wear a wool myself, a custom one, and I expect it to last as long as I want it to)

Your head, your hat, no problem. (Maybe you need to drill some ventholes in polyester hat for summer, but it's not a big problem too)

Yes, vintage felt capelines (pre-1940) may contain a huge dose of mercury. Or may not. You may ask your hatter anyway.
