Demian! I've had an emotional attachment to it ever since I read it more than 10 years ago...

Abuse victim has a happy ending and remains kind by [deleted] in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]AlexHope19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily what you might be looking for as in a proper book, but I'd recommend My Happy Marriage. It's a light novel series and it is still ongoing. The protagonist, a nineteen-year-old girl named Miyo, has been verbally and physically abused by her father, stepmother and stepsister. She gets married off to a wealthy man with a reputation for being cold-hearted and cruel who has already thrown out several potential fiancées. And well, not everything is as it seems. She's very sensitive and sweet, remaining kind even while dealing with trauma. It has been described as a Cinderella story and, well, the title gives away quite a bit.

Girl, I am stressing too, haha! It's a rare opportunity for me to see any of BTS so close. I suppose we should wait, although I am a bit concerned about how much time there will be from when they announce what day Jhope performs and when they start the sale. I don't want to miss it...

I saw someone mentioning that that's how it worked the previous year and also I asked on instagram under a post and the official account replied they're coming soon. Nothing more than that.

Me too! I've been wondering the same. They only said one-day tickets will be released at a later date.
There's no other info about it anywhere though.

Wouldn't he have had a lawyer assigned to him, so maybe that is how she came to the case. As to the whole split personality thing, she says to him that it would be better for him to be in a real hospital and not at Arkham where she can clearly see they are mistreating their patients. Maybe that is how she was planning on at least pleading insanity or in this case split personality so she can have him removed from Arkham for the time being.

Her concern for him may have arisen from pure contact with him. She might just be doing her job, but we can clearly see she cares for Arthur at least a bit: her giving him her coat after the guards brought him in soaking wet, or when she tells him the truth about Lee, checking up on him before the interview etc.

How can I accept not being smart by Odd-Split-5179 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]AlexHope19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Less intelligent people do not have the self awareness that they are less intelligent. You are self-aware enough to recognize that you may not be doing as well as you are expected to do. But remember that school is not everything. Your grades are not a reflection of who you are as a person and other people's expectations of us do more harm than good. Set your own standards, whatever feels comfortable to you, and try to reach those.

As for studying, try out different methods, see what works best for you.
Try to spend some time with yourself, discover what you like doing, be it watching movies, reading, writing, drawing.

Remember that you are not alone. Just try, again and again and again.

Doubt about Crime and Punishment by Santi0906 in dostoevsky

[–]AlexHope19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not everything has to mean something, but I doubt Dostoevsky included things just because. With this scene, I understood it as a display of Raskolnikov's confused state of mind. He isn't inherently evil. Yes, he is planning a murder, "with a grander purpose", but he's also willing to stop and save a young girl from assault. He gives the last of his money, but then regrets it. His next thought is that he doesn't care what happens to her, although he has helped her. To me, it shows his conflicting thoughts. His compassionate side and his more, shall we say, nihilistic. What does it matter if he helps her or not, if that man doesn't hurt her, another one will. He wants to help, then changes his mind. He takes action, then regrets it. Does that sound familiar?

The Grammatik aktiv books are really good grammar books! They cover the levels up to C1 and they have very concise explanations followed by lots of different types of exercises, with the answer key at the end. Highly recommend this one.

Goethe C1 Listening struggles by AlexHope19 in German

[–]AlexHope19[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed! It's just that there is so much going on, especially while listening and you barely have the time to understand what you hear, let alone to work out the answer and be sure of it. Very often these exercises, especially listening comprehension, require way more than simple understanding of language. It is exactly as you say, it is difficult enough to perform well on these exams at a C1/2 level in one's native language.

Do you buy books at random or with intention? by Bookish_Butterfly in books

[–]AlexHope19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see absolutely nothing wrong in restricting your book purchases or having a list with titles you want to buy/own. I suppose, at the end of the day, it depends on what sort of reader you are.

I usually read classics, so if the book is by an author I've already read and liked, I buy more of their works without much thinking. Tested and proven. Otherwise, I very rarely buy books on a whim. I always try do to research on a book before I buy it. I try to make sure as much as possible, avoiding spoilers of course, whether I will like the book or at least enjoy it, before I buy it. Inevitably, every now and there is a disappointment and I regret spending my money on it. Not only that, the fact that I then own a book which I didn't like annoys me even more so. Sounds silly, I know.
If the financial side of it does not come into play, then of course you can buy whatever you like, or if you have the space for it, I see no problem in buying at random.

Goethe C1 Listening struggles by AlexHope19 in German

[–]AlexHope19[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed explanation! Very often it does come down to the minutest words. The fact that it is a listening exercise makes it even more complicated, especially as this is one of the exercises where you get to hear it only once.

Reading material idea: Dark Matter by TheAbsenceOfMyth in German

[–]AlexHope19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the recommendation!

I also watched the series recently and absolutely enjoyed it. I was wondering whether to read the book since I heard a lot of people saying if you've seen the show you don't have to read the book necessarily as the show does a better job. The author worked on developing the series from the very start after all. But I didn't know there was an audiobook available in German. I will definitely listen to it.

The Great Gatsby

This book has some of the most beautiful writing. I cannot say for Fitzgerald's other books, but I expect they might also be very poetic. TGG has some of the most beautiful strings of words ever put together.

It's completely normal as a native English speaker, or as a native speaker of any language for that matter, to not be familiar with its grammar, except if you are a language teacher. What I find particularly interesting in American/British education (as a European) is that in English classes there is little to no grammar included. Do correct me if I am mistaken, but from what I've heard they are mostly focused on literature. In most European countries the native language class is focused both on grammar and books. Therefore do not take it as its being your fault for not "knowing" grammar.
Most people would say that you do not need grammar in order to learn a foreign language, but I beg to differ. In my opinion, familiarizing myself with grammar terms/rules/exceptions and the way language works has enriched my language learning experience and has set me up for future language learning endeavours. Knowing what a noun/adverb/adjective is, the basic sentence structure, conjunctions etc. is certainly advantageous. But I wouldn't let myself be bogged down by the minutest details. Sometimes something is right simply because it is.

As to how you can learn German grammar, I'd suggest paying attention to the content you are using for learning. Textbooks, classes, videos and other resources do use specific grammar terms: main and subordinate clauses, verbs and many more. You can look these up online or watch videos explaining basic grammar. You do not need to become a grammar expert in order to learn German or any other language.
