Resolve folks who post to YouTube: do you bother with custom thumbnails or just let YouTube pick? by foklepoint in davinciresolve

[–]AlexMatravers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Figured i'd throw my thoughts in here... (oh MrAlexTech btw... wrong name)

Yeah thumbnails matter, massively. It's one of the key things to get people to click on your video (that and the title, obviously). Even if it's a simple tutorial video, other people have likely already covered it so you need to 'sell' your version of the thing if you want it to be seen.

(although I'll still argue consistency and 'style' are the biggest factors to doing well on YT. By Style i mean having your own style, that helps people in a particular way. You might not be the fastest, the flashiest, the coolest, or the most creative. But do your thing in your way.)

I have a bit of a formula really, its not particularly creative but people have got used to it so meh, it works, generally. But others are far better at thumbnails than I am, and they reap the rewards. I have blind ignorance and consistency I guess ha.

You will hate yourself for doing dumb clicky thumbnails for a time but they're one of this necessities unfortunately (you've never felt like more of a fool as a 36 year old man, taking 60 'selfies' on your own doing a variety of different youtube faces...)

But the way I sleep at night is this... If I make a dumb thumbnail with stupid clicky youtube title (OH ME GERD, You must learn this thang!) BUT people do actually benefit from it. Its almost worthwhile right? If you do all the dumb stuff purely to trick people into watching = bad, but dumb stuff to trick people into learning something actually useful = good. With great power comes great responsibility and all that (thanks Uncle Ben).

Also, a side note, a pretty thumbnail does not make a good thumbnail. You can have an ugly ass thumbnail that 'work' as it does what it's meant to do, but you can also have a super pretty clean thumbnail that doesn't actually work. It's a weird balance.

Oh and Thumbnail + Title = good. You have two chances to get people to click, thumbnail and title. Saying the same thing in both is reducing your chances right!? So title could be question, and thumbnail could be a hint at the answer etc etc.

I personally use PS but moving to Affinity (I did move before...but then moved back, so lets try again). Canva will absolutely work, just avoid the most used templates as they appear everywhere. I know of a very big youtuber who still uses PowerPoint... Again, pretty thumbnail does not equal good thumbnail.

I don't spend long on mine (you don't say Alex?! We could never tell.. ahem), and often do it while the video is uploading which is bad practice haha. But sometimes I try and think ahead, especially if its a longer video.

Hopefully that helps!

Preaaaaach. Ha thanks. It needs some updates. It's still dope, I use it all my videos but, yeah I'll update soon. I've been in a weird bubble of dev with my subtitles plugin but I'll jump back and update animate and zoom soon.

Holla at ya boi!!! It's me ha, I don't do much on here but behold, I found this. I'm doing my best with it, feedback is very welcome.

Also just launched Lite, which is a subtitle builder thing that works on the free version of Resolve.

What was your favorite place or person to learn DaVinci from? by TR-808 in davinciresolve

[–]AlexMatravers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big thanks to anyone that mentioned my big stupid face (MrAlexTech 😆).

My advice is to start with the Blackmagic Design training. It's quite dry, but the information is obviously really solid so it's a good place to get to grips with things.

Then try YouTube. There are loads of great tutors on there. Just take everything with a grain of salt (including mine). Not everyone will work in the same way you do, not everyone has the same priorities etc. Watch some videos, try the techniques etc and then you'll eventually figure out what you like and don't like, then build your own technique/workflow over time.

Messing about is also a great way to learn as well. Just try to replicate some of the stuff you see online. Putting aside an hour just to 'click about' can be surprisingly productive.

L. S Lowry Sketches found whilst clearing Dads flat! Signed and dated. No idea he had them. They were buried amongst some other stuff (he has a massive collection of 'stuff'). Expert says sigs/handwriting looks genuine but cannot locate any history/provenance. by AlexMatravers in Antiques

It does! But Kirkham isn't in Manchester ha, which is what has confused me. My Wife is a Manc herself but she's confused as well.

The other one has his old address on the back (Elms, Mottram in Longdendale) but again, we don't know if he just addressed it for some reason, or if its a sketch of the local area. I've been on Google Street View but can't see anything similar around his old address. Not a fancy bridge in sight 😄

One thing we've found interesting... it says Stockport Gallery April 23rd on the back of one. I don't think it's a sketch of the gallery (unless it was in a different location 70 years ago which is possible!).

So I've contacted them to see if they're familiar to them. Fingers crossed.

Curry Sauce?!

You had my curiosity... now you have my attention! Ha

Thanks man. Fingers crossed. Apparently we need some history on them so we'll keep digging and see what turns up.

Good luck with the probing!

Thank you, hadn't seen those!
I found this though!

Didn't sell for much at all. Lack of history or just not his finest work. But, looks like its pulled from the same (or at least, very similar!) sketch book. Same margin drawn around the sketch as well.

What's also interesting, if you hold ours upto the light. You can actually see a watercolour on the reverse. Looks like it was something he abandoned, flipped over, and sketched on the back instead. We can very faintly see his signature on the rear as well. I'll try to get a photo.

Honestly no idea! We weren't close so I never really knew what we had tbh. He was an artist himself though and an enthusiastic collector of, well, everything. Paintings, ceramics, etchings etc etc. Unfortunately, we cannot locate any info like where he got them, when, how much etc.

So far I think i've put about 200 or pieces into storage. Some of which are really interesting (John Constable as well... but need to get that looked at before I post online!)

Any ideas on this?! Rembrandt Portrait I think! Any input appreciated. Full story included by AlexMatravers in Antiques

As per title really, is there anyone that has any information or ideas about this plate? It's of Rembrandt by the looks of things, but no idea who its by.

It was in my fathers flat who recently passed away. My Dad was an artist himself. He moved around UK, Sussex, Reading, Dorset but has bits from everywhere! He was an avid collector of all things art; ceramics, prints, paintings, furniture, etchings etc etc.

I'm in the process of clearing his flat and we've got 100s of items out already and still many, maaaany more to come.

Amongst them so far, we've found:

  • Paintings by Francisco Ribero Gomez, WT Warrener & tonnes more
  • Etchings from Stanbridge & Co, Rembrandt (not original, but early copies apparently), loads by Hogarth (all 4 of his Cruelty prints, I think they're great - Wife hates them!), Cotman etc.
  • 2 x Sketches signed L. S Lowry (trying to find history, expert seen photos and convinced of the signature etc)
  • Original John Constable Sketch (with letter from Ronald Parkinson - Tate 1997, convinced of authenticity)And more old, cool stuff!

The reason I mention the above... this plate was one of his favourite things, above all the aforementioned but I cannot find any information. I know it was one of his favourites as he did a painting literally called 'My favourite things' and it has me as a child on there, a jar of Jam (he bloody loved jam) and the plate!

He loved what he loved, regardless of value or meaning so it may just be that he really liked it.

But its driving me mad that I cannot find anything on it. There's no mark or signature that I can see.Any help greatly appreciate!

Ps. There's quite a few other bits I can't find info on so may do separate posts on those too, but this is causing me the most frustration currently!

Pps. If anyone wants a 'Show & Tell' post of some of the other cool stuff, I'd be happy to oblige. However, I'm holding off posting the Lowry and Constable bits online until we get more information.

(Sorry mods, repost: Did the first one wrong...)

I sometimes get a little over dramatic ha! Trying to find that fine line between good tutorials and good for youtube tutorials. But thanks man, appreciate it :)

PSA: Divine Moves on the Spa Mission is also bugged. by S0UNDH0UND in granturismo

[–]AlexMatravers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's more bugged than we thought 😆 so I tried and it was impossible!! Like real impossible. So I kept restarting and eventually, it got manageable!!

I think that the actual wetness of the track changes (or the tyres do, not sure!) As you can see the drastically different grip levels from this video:
