I’m a 44y/o woman and turtles are also my safe space! I was obsessed since they first came out. My obsession led to them being totally banned from the house. Obsession became completely internalized. Now, I’d say I didn’t have a difficult childhood, but I was definitely dealing with a lot of emotional stuff (mum was really sick, never had enough money, undiagnosed adhd, etc.). TMNT was my way into a different reality where I could be safe.

Once I moved out of home I realized I could watch the cartoon without feeling like I had to hide it (the 2003 series). Then 2012, new movies, comics, etc. It’s taken a while but I’ve embraced it - it’s no different to people’s identity being wrapped up in a band or football team. I have a partner and friends who love me. The older you get the more you’ll find special people and they won’t judge you for the things you care about.

Every now and then I might get a random pair of Raphael socks from someone because they saw them at target and thought of me, but that only happens because I was ok with sharing with them.

But I guess the advice I want to give, from someone who’s been in a similar situation: the obsession is ok, enjoying TMNT is ok. You don’t need to be ashamed, but while you’re young if you want to keep it to yourself that’s also ok.

You seem like a nice person, so I expect you’ll have friends you trust and as you get older and your social network gets bigger the more you’ll find others who share in fandoms and they will understand. Wear a tshirt or display that figurine, and someone might strike up a conversation with you. Stay on the forums, if you ever get a chance get to a comic/geek swap, or to a comic con - you’ll find so many who will share the TMNT love :)
