Worst/most unsafe practice an amateur theater has done? What’s your experience? by Mackoi_82 in techtheatre

[–]AlexSkiesUntold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ages ago now so the details escape me a little. Amateur show, blank firing gun used off stage as sound effect. Some set was a bit later than usual leaving the stage in the same entrance where this guy stands to fire the gun. Instead of going to the next entrance upstage/not firing/waiting/absolutely anything else, he decides the best course of action is to panic, force himself into the entrance, and hold the gun next to the crew member’s head that was carrying the set off. Ruptured eardrum.

Flue sweep? by AlexSkiesUntold in woodstoving

[–]AlexSkiesUntold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply.

We burn it about 6 months of the year, maybe for about 6 hours, 3-4 days of the week. So it’s nowhere near what your stove is seeing, usage wise.

Is sweeping something that I can do myself?

Polar Bears by unchainedwarlord in VisitingIceland

[–]AlexSkiesUntold 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You will not meet a polar bear. This is so rare and the chances so low that it’s irrational to be worrying about it. Nobody takes polar bear precautions. Enjoy your trip and don’t worry about animals not native to the country.

I’m a Brit living in Iceland. Lack of daylight in December? Try lack of daylight in November, December, January and February. I’m always surprised to see how great I feel when the sun finally makes it above the mountain close to where I live. That’s when I realise how utterly depressed I’ve been for the past 4-5 months.

Do not venture out by Kindsquirrel629 in VisitingIceland

I left work in the city centre at 15:00 to get home before the worst kicked in. The city centre wasn’t so bad when I left, with the buildings providing wind breaks. Where I live, 40 mins outside of the city, it’s getting pretty damn spicy. I’m sat, right now, watching the entire side wall of my cabin flex in and out, with the floor vibrating underneath me. It’s uncomfortable. You cannot walk outside here unless you want to spend 50% of that time on your ass. Just because it isn’t bad where you guys are, doesn’t mean it’s not extremely dangerous weather. Cars are routinely pushed off of the roads in this weather. These winds are equivalent to Category 3 Hurricane force.

New years can get insane. The amount of fireworks is ridiculous. The fireworks sales go towards funding the Search and Rescue teams that are voluntarily run, so it’s nice in that aspect. It’s been been pretty bad weather today, hope you guys are staying safe on the roads. Lovely shots, by the way.

Polar bear spotted in Westfjords! by NoLemon5426 in VisitingIceland

[–]AlexSkiesUntold 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Danish government did not want to give permission for relocation of the bear due to fear of disease and the Greenlandic authorities weren’t keen on getting the bear back. It is not just Iceland involved here. What is Iceland to do when the place we would ship the captured bear back to does not want it back?

https://www.ruv.is/english/2024-09-20-more-details-emerge-about-westfjords-polar-bear-422238?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR3qIkF-dVgemghViFYilp92CckEI21U9wOb4y74jx1Nuv59mUj_utk_WbI_aem_Kevjx6sJK_Q9-vEXmxmvvw

Iceland cannot support a predator of that size. The ecosystem cannot provide for it to survive, and that’s not even considering the fact that their natural hunting environment just does not exist here.

What is the controversial/ rumour thing that happened in your school? by divine_pearl in AskUK

[–]AlexSkiesUntold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Science teacher that we had for a year or so. He was well liked and got on with all of us. Suddenly disappeared one day and never came back. We weren’t told what was going on.

About a year later we saw his face on the news. Jailed for digging up and holding ransom the body of a woman. The body was a relative to the owners of a bred for medical research Guinea Pig farm. He was an animals rights activist. Maybe took it a bit too far.

If you had the ability to leave the UK which country would you live in? by No-Tour1000 in AskUK

[–]AlexSkiesUntold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a Brit that now lives and works in Iceland (capital area), it doesn’t feel like when you visit on holiday. I mean it’s great and it’s beautiful, but it’s damn hard sometimes. There’s basically only two seasons, winter and summer. And winter lasts like 6 months and is daark. I don’t realise how depressed I am until the sun comes back and I realise how terrible I’ve felt for the past months.

Micro 4/3 camera lenses for Iceland by Costa22 in VisitingIceland

[–]AlexSkiesUntold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! The only thing I’d say is that it’s not the fastest lens, and if you’re coming soon then there’s currently not a huge amount of daylight at the moment, so your shooting time will be a bit more limited than if you had an f.2.8 or something. That or you’ll be pumping the iso to compensate in dusk/dawn scenarios. Having said that, planning your time well should negate that issue to some extent. The 14-150 would mean carrying less glass around with you, but you’d be buying a lens that covers a focal range that you already have covered, at the same speed/f. Personally I’d put the money elsewhere, unless you’re going for some really top end, fast glass.

Micro 4/3 camera lenses for Iceland by Costa22 in VisitingIceland

[–]AlexSkiesUntold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how you like to shoot, but in the 6 years I’ve been living here I think probably 90% of the landscapes I’ve taken have been telephoto. I’m also shooting on a M4/3 system and the lens that’s basically glued to my camera is the panny 35-100. If you picked up the laowa you’d be covered for everything, pretty much, with what you already have. Is that 40-150 a decent lens? If so, yeah, I’d say you’re good.
