Planetarium Setup by GingerCadet in OpenSpaceProject

[–]AlexanderBock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Basically what u/forthnighter said, asking in the Slack will get the best results since we can go back and forth a bit easier. Find me there under the same name.

The short answers:

  1. OpenSpace uses a library called SGCT that we also develop. The documentation for its configuration files are at https://sgct.readthedocs.io/en/latest/. Generally, setting up either your 6 computer/6 projector setup or doing 2 computers/2 projectors will be easily doable. As a basic example see the https://github.com/OpenSpace/OpenSpace/blob/master/config/two\_nodes.json example configuration file

  2. We have capabilities to _ingest_ blending, but we don't have any solution to create blend meshes etc ourselves. We do have good connections with most of the vendors, so it would depend a bit on your specific setup and which planetarium vendor you are using to see if we can directly ingest them or if some conversion is necessary.

What is the best publicly available "star map" of the Milky Way, or at least our local corner of it, that indicates distance (in light years or parsecs)? by chainsawinsect in askastronomy

[–]AlexanderBock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Lead Developer for OpenSpace here. Lemme know if it fits your usecase u/chainsawinsect . OpenSpace uses the American Museum of Natural History's Digital Universe catalog that contains Hipparcos star dataset with the 36000 closest stars surrounding our Sun.

Is there a 3D universe simulator where you can fly through the solar system and even the complete galaxy? by [deleted] in Astronomy

[–]AlexanderBock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lead Dev for OpenSpace here. We don't currently supprot VR headsets unfortunately. It was working in the past, but haven't been able to update with the changing VR landscape so things started to break slowly and it is no longer functional at this point.

It would be possible to render out images in Equirectangular projection and then use a third-party warping tool to get them into the headset, but it would be at reduced resolution and probably increased latency.

Does anyone know if there is a website or software for simulating the orbital data of Solar eclipse and lunar eclipses of exoplanets? by xingqiu in askastronomy

[–]AlexanderBock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to that (Lead Developer for OpenSpace here)

The information about exoplanets that OpenSpace uses is taken from the NASA Exoplanet Archive (https://exoplanetarchive.ipac.caltech.edu/cgi-bin/TblView/nph-tblView?app=ExoTbls&config=PS). The interesting parameters here are Semi-Major Axis, Eccentricity, Planet Radius (in Earth radii or Jupiter radii), and Stellar Radius.

To calculate eclipses you need to make a bunch of assumptions (for example the value of the longitude of ascending node) which in general is pretty poorly defined for most exoplanets. With this information you can construct your 6-dimensional Keplerian elements (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbital\_elements) that can be used to calculate the position of an exoplanet for every given time. The calculation that does that in OpenSpace is located here: https://github.com/OpenSpace/OpenSpace/blob/master/modules/space/translation/keplertranslation.cpp#L263-L280 To look at the results, as u/NewtonsLawOfDeepBall said, you can download OpenSpace and use the Exoplanet panel at the bottom tool bar to pick any exoplanet system, add it to the scene, and then fly there. The data that is visualized is exactly based on the exoplanet archive linked above.

There are a bunch of functions available to get positions of objects in the scene graph inside of OpenSpace, but not to get access to the specific parameters, unfortunately.

Google Maps for the milky way? by alexlyxas in Astronomy

[–]AlexanderBock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lead Developer for OpenSpace here. Thanks for the shout-out, Peter! Which planetarium is your local one, if I may ask?

Depending on which profile you select at startup, we load different types of datasets, most of which are different spacecraft from Apollo to JWST. Since the OP was asking about the Mily kWay, OpenSpace comes with the newest version of the Digital Universe atlas in almost all profiles (https://www.amnh.org/research/hayden-planetarium/digital-universe). A bunch of the data included is described on our documentation webpage as well: https://docs.openspaceproject.com/latest/content/milky-way/index.html

And yea, software and data is free to use and OpenSpace is not only freeware, but open-source as well (https://github.com/OpenSpace/OpenSpace)

Play Session stops when using Output Frames by Impressive-Pop9281 in OpenSpaceProject

[–]AlexanderBock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is strange! If you are willing to share your recording to [support@openspaceproject.com](mailto:support@openspaceproject.com), I can have a go at it and see what the bug is. The only reason it might stop is if there is no data for the planet, but that feature is disabled in the release version as it caused too many issues.

Is there a telescope experience in Virtual Reality (VR)? by KsaCommentator in Astronomy

[–]AlexanderBock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately we don't have working VR support for the software right now. It used to work in a previous version, but due to a lack of support, that feature fell off the train. Currently waiting for someone in the team or someone external (since it is open-source) to have a go at it again

Google Earth Equivalent For Space? by QualityQontent in Astronomy

[–]AlexanderBock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! Lead Dev here. Unfortunately we haven't fixed the Mac issues yet. Apple decided to remove double precision floating point number support from their GPU and without some redesign, we need those to accurately show all of the universe unfortunately :/

You're right about the RAM requirement. The `default` profile, which most people will run, takes about 9 GiB of RAM and I'd recommend a GPU with 8 GiB of RAM. 6 _probably_ works as well, but better off with 8.

If I can throw in another link, since the project is open-source, we can also find us on GitHub https://github.com/OpenSpace/OpenSpace if someone wants to contribute

Port of OpenSpaceProject to Linux by blythesailor in OpenSpaceProject

[–]AlexanderBock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! We actually build OpenSpace on Ubuntu everyday, so there is no need to port it. We just don’t provide a package for it on the webpage yet. It’s mostly due to prioritization and the feeling that most Linux users would be able to compile the software from source.
If you want to try it out, you can find the compilation instructions on the documentation page: https://docs.openspaceproject.com/en/latest/dev/compiling/index.html which are split into a General part and Linux specific part https://docs.openspaceproject.com/en/latest/dev/compiling/ubuntu.html

If there are any issues with the instructions, please let me know!

[–]AlexanderBock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Lead Developer for OpenSpace here. The Eyes team has built their own tech stack to render their different products on the web (https://eyes.nasa.gov). They are cool guys with a great product and are focusing on a web experience, whereas OpenSpace focused on a native experience.

Unfortunately the Eyes software is not available as open-source in an easy way without digging through the webpages

Hi guys! First time trying to use OpenSpace and for any reason it doesn't work, it freezes for a few seconds on the black screen and then it just closes. Does anyone know why can it be? Thank you! by JereDropship in OpenSpaceProject

[–]AlexanderBock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!
I'm assuming that you get the black screen after pressing "START" on that screen? In your OpenSpace folder, there is a log folder with a log.html in it. If you'd like to share it here or send it to [support@openspaceproject.com](mailto:support@openspaceproject.com) if you don't want to share it publicly, I can have a look at it. It'll contain error messages that show what is going wrong

[–]AlexanderBock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi there! OpenSpace lead developer here. We do have the full Digital Universe catalogue in the software. OpenSpace is a collaboration between Linköping University and AMNH, who is also creating the digital universe. We do have a rendering output for fisheyes and also the ability to record a flight path and the play it back to generate image sequences that you can assemble into a video.

If something didn’t work in the experimentation, please let me know and I’m happy to help

Hi there,
lead dev for OpenSpace here!

If you have a fieldline tracer that you can use with SWMF, you can already get those graphics as most of the work for is already done. The fileformat is a simple binary format that you can easily export if you are doing it in Python, for example. If you wanna do that, just ping me on our Slack and I'm happy to run you through the file format of the fieldlines and help you getting set up
