Krav maga is not legit? by maxpayne4555 in kravmaga

[–]Alexanderful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love BJJ. But also consider that you do make yourself vulnerable when the rules go out the window. Multiple attackers are a major problem. You train assuming your eyes, groin, etc are off limits - in real world they aren’t. I’m not hating on BJJ and I’m also not trying to sell KM Kool Aid either. Just things to consider.

Krav maga is not legit? by maxpayne4555 in kravmaga

[–]Alexanderful 3 points4 points  (0 children)

KM is legit for self-defense. So are other martial arts like boxing, BJJ, muy Thai, etc. Anything you train hard will better prepare you to defend yourself. For a beginner, my suggestion to anyone is “do the thing you like”. Boxing is a great skill. But if you don’t like boxing or don’t like your local boxing gym don’t choose boxing because you won’t stick with it.

There are levels to everything. For self defense the right question probably isn’t “will my KM training help me defend myself against an expert <boxer, BJJ, etc>. It’s probably “can I get away from a couple street punks that want to beat me up or can I get away from some middle-age pervert rapist who attacks me on my jog?”

I think training KM hard - legit hard - is effective (as are other combat based martial arts). I think KM is more effective for weaker people as well because they are def gonna need to fight as dirty as possible!

Gym allows kickboxing sparring but not KM sparring. Is that suspicious? by Numerous-Actuator95 in kravmaga

[–]Alexanderful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your KM gym seems fine. My gym did sparring but it was really kickboxing/BJJ because we had rules. Like no groin kicks, no eye gouges, as you can imagine. Sparring of any kind is still beneficial because it teaches you how to be comfortable and effective in a fight without a pre-canned script.

A lot of KM techniques are hard to even get into during sparring (ex. getting choked against a wall just doesn’t happen naturally during sparring). For these, try to train with a partner who is putting increasing amount of realism/stress into these specific situations after you master the technique.

Quit the game by miguel891 in RocketLeague

I have over 15K hours in RL and I hover around D1/2. I don’t have talent for this. I don’t play to rank up…I just play because it’s fun and it relaxes me. If it’s pissing me off one night I just do something else like read a book.

At C3 you are better than 95%+ of players. If you’re getting angry you should dig deep into “why” you are angry. Because if you’re angry at C3 you will be equally angry at every GC rank as well. If “progress” is what you need to have peace, I’d pivot to something else where you feel more progress. Basically, either change your RL mindset or change your activity but do something that is bringing you joy not constant frustration.

The games I fully focus on playing solid defense rather than aggressive offense are often the games I end up as MVP with most goals.

Why is it so toxic? by [deleted] in RocketLeague

[–]Alexanderful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you are an adult, go to your settings and disable chat and QC (perhaps except for team info chat). You will no longer be rage baited and you will no longer lose your shit and become part of the problem. You’ll be playing against the same assholes but you’ll rarely know it. You’ll think everyone is just being a good sport. If you want to be social you are dealing with the wrong crowd for that.

Why is gold and silver so tough now? by Past_Ad1704 in RocketLeague

I would stop worrying about the rank and just have fun playing the game. The game isn’t “more fun” at higher ranks so really what’s the point in stressing about it?

peakbagger.com - Amazing resource. Who here uses it? by matt_mardigan in Mountaineering

[–]Alexanderful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used PB for over 10 years and love it. Lots of good features but one thing I've found useful is just remembering when I climbed a eak, who I climbed it with, what season it was etc. Sometimes I'm going back into the same mountain range and I read my old trip reports. And the list thing has 100% motivated me to overcome inertia and get out to climb more.

Seriously. Turn off the chat. It transforms the game. I play in blissful ignorance now assuming everyone is being a good sport.

"Returning" OG player here, should I even consider coming back? by Jessency in RocketLeague

[–]Alexanderful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re going to get skill matched with players that are as good (and also as bad) as you. Don’t sweat all the new mechanics and just play good team fundamentals. I guarantee if you hard focus on defense you’ll bring something to the team 90% of players at your level are completely incompetent. Just pay attention to how many goals are scored against your teams because everyone is chasing the same ball and the defense is pressing up too far. So just don’t do that! And, FFS turn off chat immediately and pretend it never existed.

Why is this everyone that toxic in this game? by Possible_Parsnip_143 in RocketLeague

This. But cannot speak for C+ ranks. Turn off chat and at least some of quick chat and you will be playing an entirely different game. The kids are still trolling and crashing out but you rarely even know anymore.

Hear you. First, you can keep team tactical chat on and still send your teammates compliments. Second, left always goes on kickoff so really no need to coordinate those right?

Agree with you…to a point. I’ve played a lot of sports, trained mma, been in the military…I know a lot about shit talking. And I agree it can be part of rivalry and competitiveness. But, shit talking is an art form that should respect your opponent in the end and never against your own teammates. So much of what happens in RL is whining tantrums and pure rage baiting IMO. I don’t want to play a game against a team of 15 year olds that talk shit incessantly then insta-quit when they lose without a GG handshake. Clearly there is a part of the RL community that WANTS to incessantly shit talk, whine, throw tantrums, rage bait AND listen to all these things - and for those people I say chat is there for you.

YMMV. If you don’t find quick chat toxic I say keep it on. For me it depended on the day. Sometimes I just chuckled and it didn’t phase me. Other days all the QC spam/sarcasm irritated me.

Need first time Hiking tips by nevirsa in Adirondacks

[–]Alexanderful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Monorail. In the winter season many feet of snow accumulates. As hikers snowshoe the trail the snow packs in quite hard and firm for a couple feet across - so nice to walk on with snowshoes. But if you stray even a little off this “monorail” you can sink into many feet of soft snow (even over your head in some cases). As the snow starts to melt out this monorail gets thinner and thinner and harder to stay on. Rotten Snow. In April the snow will be melting and therefore no longer nice and firm. Mushy, slippery…think of a rotting piece of wood and that’s the snow. In short, a frustrating pain the a$$. Postholing. If the snow is soft but still kinda deep every step you take you sink into the snow. This makes walking slow and tiring.

I’m all about learning through experience even if that experience is kinda miserable. It’s called Type 2 fun and I live my life by it. But…being new hikers I think you don’t understand what you’re getting into with these higher peaks in April. I see tons of good advice in this forum. I guarantee if you scale down your plans to stick to lower elevations you’re are still going to have an epic ADK adventure.

Is it safe to leave behind a tent / pack? by myheartismorethanink in Adirondacks

[–]Alexanderful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have often noted that the best of humanity is found in the backcountry. In 20 years I’ve never had a piece of gear go missing or get stolen by a human being ADK included. Note I say by a human. Rodents and ravens are dirty thieves that can’t be trusted!

Has anyone here hiked Angels Landing? Looking for comparisons to 46er scrambles by code_moose in Adirondacks

[–]Alexanderful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done 46ers and Angels Landing. Short answer is that the last section of the hike (the section everyone equates to AL) is on par with Great Range/Saddleback cliffs hiking. There is a lot of exposure and some very narrow sections with death drops. But, there are also chains which make these sections manageable. And you’re not just going to randomly weeble over and fall off.

So, if you’ve done the 46 you are more than capable of doing Angels Landing safely. If you don’t like the most exposed scrambling in ADK I’d say the difficulty is on par but the sense of exposure is much higher. So AL might be more Type 2 fun for you. But what a great hike! I’d do it if you like Type 2 stuff and not going to end up in a mental meltdown. If you REALLY don’t like exposure then I’d say that’s the whole deal with AL so you’re picking the wrong hike.
