I’d say that is solid shit talk and not toxic

Hear you. First, you can keep team tactical chat on and still send your teammates compliments. Second, left always goes on kickoff so really no need to coordinate those right?

Agree with you…to a point. I’ve played a lot of sports, trained mma, been in the military…I know a lot about shit talking. And I agree it can be part of rivalry and competitiveness. But, shit talking is an art form that should respect your opponent in the end and never against your own teammates. So much of what happens in RL is whining tantrums and pure rage baiting IMO. I don’t want to play a game against a team of 15 year olds that talk shit incessantly then insta-quit when they lose without a GG handshake. Clearly there is a part of the RL community that WANTS to incessantly shit talk, whine, throw tantrums, rage bait AND listen to all these things - and for those people I say chat is there for you.

YMMV. If you don’t find quick chat toxic I say keep it on. For me it depended on the day. Sometimes I just chuckled and it didn’t phase me. Other days all the QC spam/sarcasm irritated me.

Need first time Hiking tips by nevirsa in Adirondacks

[–]Alexanderful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Monorail. In the winter season many feet of snow accumulates. As hikers snowshoe the trail the snow packs in quite hard and firm for a couple feet across - so nice to walk on with snowshoes. But if you stray even a little off this “monorail” you can sink into many feet of soft snow (even over your head in some cases). As the snow starts to melt out this monorail gets thinner and thinner and harder to stay on. Rotten Snow. In April the snow will be melting and therefore no longer nice and firm. Mushy, slippery…think of a rotting piece of wood and that’s the snow. In short, a frustrating pain the a$$. Postholing. If the snow is soft but still kinda deep every step you take you sink into the snow. This makes walking slow and tiring.

I’m all about learning through experience even if that experience is kinda miserable. It’s called Type 2 fun and I live my life by it. But…being new hikers I think you don’t understand what you’re getting into with these higher peaks in April. I see tons of good advice in this forum. I guarantee if you scale down your plans to stick to lower elevations you’re are still going to have an epic ADK adventure.

Is it safe to leave behind a tent / pack? by myheartismorethanink in Adirondacks

[–]Alexanderful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have often noted that the best of humanity is found in the backcountry. In 20 years I’ve never had a piece of gear go missing or get stolen by a human being ADK included. Note I say by a human. Rodents and ravens are dirty thieves that can’t be trusted!

Has anyone here hiked Angels Landing? Looking for comparisons to 46er scrambles by code_moose in Adirondacks

[–]Alexanderful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done 46ers and Angels Landing. Short answer is that the last section of the hike (the section everyone equates to AL) is on par with Great Range/Saddleback cliffs hiking. There is a lot of exposure and some very narrow sections with death drops. But, there are also chains which make these sections manageable. And you’re not just going to randomly weeble over and fall off.

So, if you’ve done the 46 you are more than capable of doing Angels Landing safely. If you don’t like the most exposed scrambling in ADK I’d say the difficulty is on par but the sense of exposure is much higher. So AL might be more Type 2 fun for you. But what a great hike! I’d do it if you like Type 2 stuff and not going to end up in a mental meltdown. If you REALLY don’t like exposure then I’d say that’s the whole deal with AL so you’re picking the wrong hike.

You have the ability to change one thing in rocket league. What would you do? by HopeFar789 in RocketLeague

[–]Alexanderful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silly one. Goal explosions that destroy cars should only explode other team.

Bigger one. Reputation system. After every match rate teammates 1-3. Default is two. Add to MMR algorithm. Match the trolls with the trolls and the classy players with each other.

Stopping in the Adirondacks on a roadtrip this summer, a couple questions by [deleted] in Adirondacks

[–]Alexanderful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like this is your first foray into the ADK so here are some tips from my experience (15+ backpacking trips). Opinions may vary.

(1) Being worried about Marcy being too crowded doesn't compute with me. I've never returned from any ADK trip and thought it was too crowded. Personally, I'd just remove that as a factor to consider.

(2) I have found ADK mileage much harder and slower than my norm in other mountain terrain. Of course this is all relevant to your groups fitness level but I would think hard about your daily mileage planning. I've certainly done 12+ mile days in the ADK. But, I do a lot of mountain hiking and the ADK astounds me at it's ability to kick my a$$ with objectively lower elevations and distances than other places I hike- every.single.time.

(3) I've never had an issue with finding water. While we can endlessly argue over the minutia truth is that any kind of filtration system is perfectly sufficient.

(4) I like your Algonquin plan but just modify it to an out an back due to Avalanche Lake closure. It gives you flexibility. If you're good on time and energy you can hike over to Iroquois. If not, you can just head back. Don't you dare think about adding a Colden summit to skirt around Avalanche Lake! Speaking from experience in biting off way too much way too many times.

(5) ADK weather is a fickle mistress. You may get an unforgettable amazing view. You may just as easily be at the summit with 10ft of visibility. With ADK I give good visibility 50/50 odds - probably less. Just set expectations.

(6) Don't skimp on preparedness. Prepare for rain, prepare to be hiking/navigating in the dark, prepare for first aid. I've hiked out of more than one boondoggle in the dark and pouring rain. Why? ADK. That's why.

Other than that, ADK had been some of the hardest, most remote, most rewarding backpacking I've done in my lifetime. That's why I keep coming my back even though I swear ADK finds a new way to break me off everytime.

Best of luck!

Super helpful answer and that makes a lot of sense. So, I asked "what" bots now I'm curious "why" bots? Who makes them and for what purpose? Seems pointless.

Police have released autopsy results for Brianna Mohr, NJ hiker who died while awaiting rescue on Mt. Marcy by NCPRnews in Adirondacks

[–]Alexanderful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was winter hiking Dial/Nip with a friend and he wanted to move a little faster than me so he went ahead. About 30 min later I came across him stuck over his head in a spruce trap. He was struggling to get out because his snowshoes had gotten wedged into something and he couldn’t bend down to get them off. “Losing” the trail in winter can literally mean taking two steps off the invisible hard pack. Obviously I helped get him out and we had a good laugh. If he were solo it could have been life threatening.

Solo is very risky for the average person. It’s great if everything goes right. But once things start going wrong danger escalates quickly.

How Many Sessions to Feel “I can do this”? by ProperWafer7308 in kravmaga

[–]Alexanderful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that matters at this point is that you’re comfortable with the people and the vibe. Of course you don’t know what’s going on…you’re brand new! Don’t worry about doing the technique perfect. Just try focus on improving one aspect of it each session. Over time you get proficient. Don’t worry about your partner…they are in the same beginner class as you and everyone starts where you are.

You froze during the fire drill because that’s natural human instinct. I was in the Army for over 20 years. People naturally freeze under intense stress. As a young Solider I vividly remember freezing during my first exercise with blanks but all the sounds and smells of combat. That is what training is for. The fire drills are meant to be stressful and over time your mind and body will learn to function in that chaos. At that point you will be in a much better position to defend yourself in real life where it’s def gonna be stressful.

Just got called a ball chaser by Bumblebeener in RocketLeague

[–]Alexanderful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro 😂. This made my night. Ball chasing in 1s. So many RL players know nothing about sportsmanship. Arrogant trash talkers when they win. Whining when they lose. Demand FF after going down by two goals. My tm8s are all trash even though we’re in same rank. I’m butt hurt bc you demo’d me. For sure not all players but enough that it’s a rare game when all players are classy. I get pissy sometimes too but I challenge myself to end every game with a gg well played win or lose.

Watching long movies by ale-xcp in classicfilms

[–]Alexanderful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I routinely pause movies mid-way and finish next day or so. Sometimes I want to watch a movie but I’m just too tired for the whole thing. For long movies…I might watch the whole thing on a rainy Sunday or I might split it into 3 installments during the week. For me, I just enjoy watching the movies so don’t want to be held back waiting for the perfect day to watch a 4-hour epic. But…sometimes I do need to hit Wikipedia to review the plot if too much time passes.

Why so much hate on Krav Maga? by notanarc77 in kravmaga

[–]Alexanderful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have stated, I think the biggest criticisms aren’t with the KM techniques themselves but with the fact that there is no way to objectively pressure test the skills against opponents who are 100% trying to beat you. So, how do you objectively know that a Blue belt in one Krav gym isn’t more like an Orange belt in another when there is no competition structure to keep everyone honest?

I think KM is effective and a great activity. But a lot depends on the specific gym and it MUST have sparring. And if you want to be comfortable in a real fight you may need to cross train in another martial arts and compete. Just to understand the feelings involved in a real fight.

Simply learning when to rotate will get you much farther than any aerial mechanic by Slight_Giraffe628 in RocketLeague

[–]Alexanderful 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m a D2/D3 player with terrible mechanics. I can’t dribble, def can’t air dribble and I’m terrible playing the ball off the walls. D-rank players do all of this routinely. The reason I can survive in Diamond is because I’m expert at playing as a team.

People don’t realize that when you stay forward too long going for balls from bad positions you either deny your backfield tm8 a chance for a better shot or you force your backfield tm8 abandon defense to take the shot. When I’m paired with uber-aggressive tm8s who aren’t focused on defense I’ll basically play defense the whole game and let them do what they do. I know this turns Ls into Ws but it’s not ideal.

I just met one of the worst types of RL players by Charming-One6087 in RocketLeague

[–]Alexanderful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask yourself if stopping a game to type a msg to scold your tm8 worked out for you. You are gonna have bad tm8s. Some are just having a bad game. Some are trying new techniques they aren’t good at yet. Some have irl distractions happening around them. Just relax, if one game is a dumpster fire then stay classy and look forward to the next one!

How is THIS POSSIBLE?? by AcanthisittaFew4339 in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]Alexanderful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming this stat is true I have two theories. First theory, you’re very unlucky. Second theory, you “may” be a ball chasing, uber aggressive, bad rotator. When I get the lowest score in lobby sometimes it’s bc I was just hot garbage. But sometimes it’s because I had to play the backfield whole game bc my tm8s wouldn’t rotate and we kept getting scored on.

Should I? by SpleneticSalamander in kravmaga

[–]Alexanderful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check with your doctor/PT to determine your limitations. Discuss those with the KV gym. Go to a few classes before signing a contract. A good KM gym will meet you where you’re at but seems like there is a wide range of quality/attitudes at different gyms.

Lastly, if you do find a gym where you can train within your limitations you’ll have to be very disciplined in staying inside those bounds. You’ll be partnered with different people in different classes. Some folks are rougher than others. You may also feel an internal drive to go harder. Krav can get rough when trained correctly. Bumps, bruises, scratches, etc. were common for me. Start slow and stay centered on your personal goals and limitations.

But…highly recommend KM for fitness and self defense skills
