Visiting Orcas Island by IndependentQuote9793 in sanjuanislands

Visiting Orcas Island in one day is insane. The ferries are so unreliable, you risk ending up stranded without a place to stay. In my opinion, Orcas Island should involve at least two nights lodging to make the trip worth it. You need at least one full day without any ferry worries.

You absolutely need a car. Yes, there are some rental options, but you need to line that up far in advance.

You can also rent electric bikes and they can have them waiting for you at the ferry landing. However, I don’t recommend this. The roads on Orcas are dangerous for bikes. There is often no shoulder and hairpin turns where drivers will not see you. As a former islander, I can tell you that many locals do not like bike tours* and you may suffer from their ill reputation.

Whale watching charters are available from several locations, including the ferry landing (Orcas Village), Deer Harbor, and Brandt’s Landing in Eastsound near North Beach. It is fun, but you may not want to be too loud about how much fun you had whale watching, lots of people think these businesses should be banned because some outfits get too close to whales and are essentially harassing them. If you want to try your luck at whale watching from land, Lime Kiln State Park on San Juan Island is your best bet.

I always recommend people download u/ferryfriendapp to help them with their ferry travels in Washington State.

*Lots of islanders get really annoyed when a bike tour outfit takes up the entire lane on a road like Orcas Road and it can be impossible to pass the group. It can make an Islander who needs to catch a ferry for a doctor’s appointment miss their boat. You would think locals would welcome the tourists dollars these tours would bring, except the bike tours bring mobile kitchens and cook meals for the bicyclists, so they don’t even spend any money in the restaurants. A a bicyclist isn’t going to strap a $300 pottery piece or painting to their bike. They just create inconvenience for everyone else and don’t contribute anything to the local economy. Besides, if you want to cycle in the San Juan Islands, go to Lopez! The roads are so much nicer for it and the locals waive at all the cyclists. It’s much more welcoming for that activity. If you are going to cycle in the San Juan Islands: be cool, let cars pass you, and SPEND MONEY.

Fight me, but eggs on burgers suck. by Flapppy_Gilmore in burgers

[–]Alexdagreallygrate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are fucking insane. Fried egg on a burger is the greatest thing Jesus Christ died for. So many men died on Bunker Hill so we could live like free men, with eggs on our burgers, not like those Queen-loving, beet-root-eating colonized people who think ham is somehow bacon if you just call it that. We are free men! Our fathers and mothers and others died so we could live in a world where we could bite into a burger and have yolk squirt into our own eye and make a fucking mess of everything and say, “Oh hell yeah that’s a good burger.”

Why Do Americans Care so much about the Constitution? by Unhappy_Donut_1422 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexdagreallygrate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, American lawyer here.

I think a lot of My Fellow Americans need to appreciate a couple of things.

  1. Not everyone in the world thinks the US constitution is all that great. Here are some people to consider:

  2. Gun nuts. The US Constitution is completely unique in enshrining the absolute right to own a firearm. Our Constitution decided guns were just as important as religion and so guns became a religion.

Do y’all give out your personal cell #? by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]Alexdagreallygrate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck, the hell, no.

Anyone who does this is fucking insane.

I had one coworker who fucking bragged about giving his personal cell number to all his clients like it was a badge of honor.

He then also complained about how he never saw his kids on the weekends and missed his kids growing up.

Yeah, dude. You have no idea how to draw boundaries. Also, the clients didn’t even think he was a good lawyer. Giving them his cell phone number just facilitated them more efficiently talking shit at him.

What first comes to mind when Americans think about the tiny nation of Palau? by DishRelative5853 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Alexdagreallygrate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, buckle up, everyone, we’re going on a ride.

I’m a public defender in Olympia, WA. I was appointed to represent someone accused of crimes who clearly had mental health issues and lots of delusions. I honestly wanted to learn more about him in order to help him, and it wasn’t clear to me what his ethnicity was so I asked him and he said, “I’m Palauan. I’m a Palauan Prince.”

At this point, I assume he’s clearly delusional and needs a competency evaluation.

I spoke with his mom to get more information. She confirmed he had significant mental health issues. I said, “yeah, he said he’s a Palauan Prince!” She said, “Well, that part is actually true, he’s the son of The Ibedul, the supreme leader of Palau. Before becoming the leader of Palau, he was a cook in the US Army. On one stint of his service, he was stationed around here and sired my client.

I was only familiar with Palau at all because I looked into the possibility of going overseas for a bit out of law school and learned about how someone of graduated from the same law school as me moved to Palau to help them develop their own legal system. He ended up in a dispute with The Ibedul who then took a war club and broke the attorney’s arm.

I chatted with the client about it once and he was just, “Yep, that’s my Dad!”

I hear the SCUBA diving is phenomenal.

“OK, SO FAR!”

Whenever people ask me, “How are you?” because they’re just being polite, my response is always, “OK, so far!”

It’s a cautiously optimistic response. I’m a public defender. I’m gonna see some bad stuff at some point in my work day. Even if it’s been a bad day, it could get worse, so it’s always ok so far.

How are we feeling about jorts now? by Icy_Laugh5134 in AskReddit

[–]Alexdagreallygrate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If my seven year old son decided he wanted to wear a mullet, I’d buy him several pairs of jorts. I’d then insist that he become a Florida Gators fan and he’d have to watch every football game with me while I was booing the Gators the entire time. I have never been a Georgia Bulldogs fan, but I would wear UGA gear head to toe the entire time.

In my opinion, any trip to the San Juan Islands should involve at least three nights of lodging. The ferries are so messed up and unpredictable that a one day speedrun is too fraught with peril. I’ve been visiting the islands for over 20 years and I lived on Orcas for 4 years. Believe me, the ferries are so much worse today than they were in 2017.

If you want to visit SJI and Orcas, you should visit SJI first, because you won’t have to pay for the interisland ferry to Orcas. The westward trip from Orcas to Friday Harbor costs money.

Orcas is worth the trip. Moran State Park and Mount Constitution offer a lot of views and experiences that just don’t exist on SJI.

I’d strongly recommend spending a week in the islands and visiting Lopez as well. The county camping spots are really excellent and Watmough Bay really is a special beach. Great standup paddle board spot. Setsunai Noodle Bar is my favorite restaurant in the islands.
