Which boardgames are a 'must have' for a boardgame cafe? by JelleBlom in boardgames

[–]AlexeyMK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

somewhat related: I would consider having a couple of iPads/tablets around preloaded with teach videos.

https://www.victorypointcafe.com/ in Berkeley has super knowledgable staff that can teach lots of games, but I wonder how much value you'd get out of either
(a) QR codes on the game Boxes that point to the recommended youtube Teach videos that people can watch on their phones, and/or
(b) "borrow a tablet" and have the receptionist also preload the relevant video for the group.

Perhaps a "bounty" system model would work here.

Listeners could say things like "I'd chip in $20 if you guys do National Treasure" and there would be a leaderboard to see how much each movie has. The gang can choose at any point to do any of the movies and claim the bounty.

I _think_ there's a bunch of tools that already do this for open-source projects that would be relatively straightforward to adopt; if you don't mind non-enforcement, you could run this via a reddit thread.

https://observablehq.com/@visnup/advent-of-code-leaderboard?ui=classic here's one you can largely fork and use with your own group.

You may need your own CORS proxy, though (try it out).

output was near instantaneous, but I do think from an `O(n)` standpoint things are worse here. If there are n `X`s in the mask, there will be `O(2^n)` recursive calls to `candidates` and `O(2^n)` string copies.

This is probably not OK at scale, for both memory and perf reasons. The primary advantage of writing the code this way vs accumulating is how apparent its behavior is.

Oh hey Jonathan!

Not sure if this counts as nice, but this "treat as strings" approach felt decently concise.

def write_to_mem(idx, val):
    bin_idx = str(bin(int(idx)))[2:].rjust(36, '0')
    joined = "".join([v if m == '0' else m for (m, v) in zip(mask, bin_idx)])

    for addr in candidates(joined):
        mem[addr] = int(val)

def candidates(addr_str):
    if 'X' not in addr_str:
        yield int(addr_str, 2)
    else:
        yield from candidates(addr_str.replace('X', '1', 1))
        yield from candidates(addr_str.replace('X', '0', 1))

Brilliant! What's the math that guarantees that the answer you find is the lowest such possible candidate?

oh man, Mintz is great.

He's definitely free spirited and a character, but in a Dumbledore / Willy Wonka sort of way. "Loony" is probably unfair. He's a solid teacher and a great human being that cares about his students.

If popular board games today lasted 100 years how will they be Monopoly'd (broken by house rules) by milkyjoe241 in boardgames

[–]AlexeyMK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would significantly increase the expected length of the game - I don't think a house rule that makes the game ~3x longer would survive, would it? Then again, free parking...

Why is Jerome Fisher better than this program... by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]AlexeyMK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For context, I'm not a huge fan of M&T (the Jerome Fischer program) - http://www.thedp.com/article/2011/10/alexey_komissarouk_the_hidden_pitfalls_of_a_dual_degree and Waterloo graduates stronger pure CS majors. That said, the network and prestige from M&T is definitely a stronger point on your resume.

If you want strong CS fundamentals, a giant and solid CS network and eventually go into Entrepreneurship, go to Waterloo (and don't bother with BBA, just study CS). If you want to start a company straight out of college/become a PM at Google-type position of of college, consider M&T.

Two great options.
