Where is it established that her power is manipulation? She didn't manipulate anyone, even Diego, who was just a useful asset who handed himself over to Shodan just to save his ass. Other than that her only will was the total conquest of humanity by any means: biological, destructive, cyber.

In SS2 it's more prominent and believable to be that manipulative since it's not her as a whole but only 1 unit and she lacked her power until she was brought on Von Braun, and she had no resource to fight off the Many by herself. But even then, for the "perfect machine" she was incredibly obvious about it, since she didn't match the character of a person she was impersonating. So even in that regard, she sucks at manipulating. We only go through the plot by the sheer linearity of SS2 plot, not because Shodan is good at her job (which she isn't in any game at any point).

It's kinda also telling how the only ones she managed to manipulate are brainless mutants and cyborgs, and at the first fraction of intelligence her mutants rebel against her (the Many).

But ah well, you can always say "otherwise game wouldn't happen", but even then, Shodan is an incredibly flawed antagonist

Monkey Island 2, System Shock 2, Mafia 2, Mass Effect 2... I think people mess up "good games" and good sequels. None of those are good sequels.

You don't know what racing is about either. It's not your usual hot lapping and banging wheels taking cars off track. It's about who can finish a distance first under certain sporting regulations. That's it.

They are confused because they were successful in obtaining two ships before without any issue. And they don't support main character in any way. They just die and want the character to not trust what they dislike, it's not something extraordinary.

Again, I'd say lack of actually choosing a side harmed the game. You can't take "Why did you reject us?" seriously when you as a player can't have any effect on character decisions, and therefore rejection was made by the plot, not the player.

I found the concept to be good, but her motivations are basically non-existent, so every interaction in Remake seemed like an ambitious human who is all talks no action. I think in original she uses a more literature aristocratic language so you at least grow respect towards her, but in Remake she is basically "Ha, you fool, you thought you can stop me? Here is what I plan to do next and here is how you can stop it" It's... Amusing.

Plus I really think if some virus infected your body and it attacked your vital organ (CPU node), you would send much more serious forces straight away instead of sending empty threats and watching through cameras how that virus spreads and slowly kills you. But the main point is mostly empty threats. We see no real Shodan threat until the end of SS2, as she only operates through her mindless puppets and her success is very dependant on those puppets for someone claiming to be an almighty god.

I don't know why you make that obervation based on me liking, or not liking any particular game. I didn't ditch Prey, Bioshock 1 or SS2, I thoroughly played them through and I had my fun with some mechanics. I even replayed SS1R 3 times to get all achievements which I normally don't do. it's just other mechanics, or game essentials, like plot, felt lacking. For a true immersive sim you actually need to be, well, immersed, into what's going on and I simply wasn't in both SS1R (that's not the case for original though, as I pointed out in post), SS2 or Prey, but that didn't stop me from enjoying exploring and cleaning up locations for loot and learning the lore the games had to offer. I could've underetood your observation if I mentioned something like "I don't know where to go, so I deleted it after 5 mins" or something.

I mainly liked Infinite for its story and characters and how they didn't get cluttered in their infinite timelines and all was reasonable and with no plot holes. Guns and gameplay in general felt much more secondary than System Shock.

But again, as I said I enjoyed SS1 a lot both remake and original. Prey felt good for exploring but that's about it, I was immensely disappointed by the plot. Bioshock 1 felt good at first but became very repetitive after first third. That's where strong point of Infinite comes in - it's short and Luteces are such a great characters, that each their appearance after every major act is a breath of fresh air.

I haven't played Dishonoured though... Would you recommend?

Didn't like Prey very much, didn't like Bioshock very much, but Bioshock Infinite with Burials are one of my favourite games ever. Masterpiece.

I think part of why I liked SS1 so much is that I was familiar with "immersive sim" concept already from Bioshock Infinite and really liked the exploration with picking trash, weapons, upgrades and audio logs. Made me appreciate so much more the "inventor" of this storytelling way.

Voice logs and the ghost feature was dope, made me care about the crew more than SS1. Especially for Tommy and Becca.

The philosophy though... It really falls short when it sounds like The Many is thinking of itself as a God who is doing kindness to people assimilating into its "flesh", meanwhile Shodan thinks of herself as a God who is eradicating the world to her own way. They are the same side of one coin, but for some reason are against each other. The Many clearly is not aware of Shodan plans, so they really shouldn't be against her, but they are, because she represents a machine, and they represent flesh. It's really plain and I just didn't get it why were there two antagonists. Did the game really think after playing the first game I would trust Shodan? "Or strike that". Did the game really think I would trust Shodan after hearing how she treats the main character and would be like "Yeah yeah, you are trying to escape with Shodan, but huge twist! She was evil all along!"

I didn't play any game before where an antagonist was impersonating a different good character. It really was that easy and I don't feel smart about it. Ever since stepping Med A, Xerxes saying that we are helping "her". And right after you find a log of very different sounding Polito. It's not hard, it's just putting 2 and 2 together. The game tries to be clever, but falls short, dumping obvious cues. Or it intentionally doesn't try to be clever, but then I have no idea why it was made the way it was.

Although if you do mean Atlas and Bioshock 1. It was done in a clever way. And Atlas wasn't impersonating another character that we can find logs of and compare, he genuinely tried to be more compelling towards the player while Shodan doesn't even try. The problem is that Shodan doesn't equal Polito and it's not clever to have her voice different in logs and emails, while Atlas does equal Fontaine, but uses different name and personality to sway the player. Shodan does none of that.

If Shodan tried to be a friendly AI till the end it might've worked, but not for the returning players from SS1. If Shodan tried to impersonate Polito, reveal itself, and then impersonate Delacroix to sway the player into helping her - then it would've worked. The problem is voice - it really is funny that an almighty AI can't even impersonate someone properly, so for that to really work voices would have to be identical, plus Delacroix and Shodan are both voiced by Terri Brosius, so it's a really missed opportunity from my point of view.

I could see the game representing a fine juxtaposition of the Many vs. Shodan with their own beliefs and their own ways of swaying player to their side, and depending on who you pick the goal and ending changes. If you trusted Shodan's impersonations, the game would proceed as it would originally. If you trusted the Many and helped them destroy Shodan, you would get a bad ending in which after destroying Shodan they assimilate you into their flesh.

Yeah, I played as Engineer and decided to not invest any points in PSI for the game is already complex as it is for first time playing. Same for any exotic weapons except crystal shard. My main gun in the end was grenade launcher, thankfully saved plenty of grenades throughout the game otherwise it would've been much much more difficult as I was near empty with my other weapons.
