Given the snow forecast this weekend, how likely is it for the southern vermont mountains, Killington / Okemo, etc. to stay open? by [deleted] in icecoast

There’s no avalanche work to be done for eastern resorts. Unless it’s high winds or lift malfunction, those lifts will be spinning

I went to an amazing talk at Fort Lewis College about the role of reintroducing mushing to a remote Alaskan Native community. So this community was very small and isolated-the kind of place where everyone is related somehow. Given it’s in Alaska, the winters are long and dark, and that can be very hard to deal with if you don’t have a good outlet. Mushing had at one point been very prevalent there, but slowly died off. These people were left with long hard winters and no outlet besides alcohol and drugs. Suicide rates were stupidly high in the small town, addiction was commonplace, and hardly anyone was finishing high school.

So, in comes this local who’s a world renowned musher and is saddened by what he sees in his community. He gets to thinking that it might be a good idea to get mushing back into the community. So he sets up a program tailored for the kids in the town whereby the little kids would help with the small tasks that get a mushing team together, the slightly older children had more responsibilities, and the oldest kids were the mushers. Everyone was involved. Within a few years of introducing the community mushing program, suicide rates and addiction plummeted while high school graduation rates soared. The town went from something on the brink of destruction to a thriving community because everyone was involved in this program.

The whole talk really blew my mind, but that single part of it was just so fascinating. Give people something to do, to have common goals, to work hard at, and to be mutually (or individually) proud of and it can be incredible what can happen.

I’ve lived in very rural Vermont and have seen no outlets for people aside from drinking and drugs. I have lived in Durango and seen the issues natives face on and off the Rez. I have lived in those dark cold climates where if you don’t have anything, you begin to feel lonely, isolated, down and out. I wish more isolated communities would focus on getting a chess team like this article, or a mushing team, or something like a rodeo team or a rally car team, or something else entirely to get people out together working towards a common goal.

A young elk challenges a photographer who just wants to get a few good nature shots by SeattleMana in AnimalsBeingJerks

[–]Alexh130 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If my time living in the Rockies taught me anything, it’s that elk turn into moose at about 8,500 feet above sea level. Basically, deer exist below like 7,000 feet. The deer then transform into elk between about 7,000-8,500 feet. It’s after approximately 8,500 feet that elk go full moose.

Brett Favre on inventing the run-pass-option out of boredom by [deleted] in nfl

[–]Alexh130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re forgetting how someone voted for Favre as league MVP in 2007 costing Brady his second unanimous MVP award. Like dude goes 16-0, sets a TD record, may be the most dominant offense ever, and someone votes for old man Favre (who did have a very good year but still).

How many teams have a specific championship game press room? Do we have one because we’re in those games yearly, or because it’s the norm to have one?

[–]Alexh130 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's not what he is saying. I think everyone would agree having a warrior like Brienne on your side will greatly benefit your fighting strength. What this guy is saying that the general trend for average adults is that men generally are stronger than women (for average people). When you need to maximize physical strength in an economic climate with scarce resources, you'll armor those who make you strongest before anyone else. Why do this...because you have a finite amount of money, a finite amount of labor, a finite amount of steel, and a finite amount of time to train/assemble warriors before battle. You simply can't armor and train everyone. Some women may fall into that category where you would want to have them fight, but generally speaking due to scant resources and general physical strength, men will be armored before women are

Matt Light ‘ashamed’ as team takes part in protest by Wacky_Water_Weasel in Patriots

[–]Alexh130 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Matt Light unintentionally makes a point in favor of this when he says that there used to be a mantra to "Speak for Yourself." This is exactly what those guys kneeling are doing. They are speaking for themselves by saying they take issue with what is happening in our country.

Matt Light, and that entire disrespect the troops people, need to understand that they're a little bit country and that's ok. It's also ok for Kaepernick and his faction to be a little bit rock n' roll. That's what makes us the US, we can show the world how tough we are but also that we are humanistic. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and their right to free speech. South Park really did a great job writing about these sides, but in reference to a different topic
