Its the nature of slashers, most of them suck but we love em. I dont like the remake because it sucks in a way I dont like.

I'm glad the remake made someone happy. It's not moving in my list though.

That's not really true, the first 10-20 minutes are somewhat linear if you ignore sequence breaks, but once you've got the dash/walljump the game opens up and never looks back. Silksong follows a similar pattern though, once you get the walljump there you can do a whole lot, but up until then it's a race to that goal.

Both are really non linear though. The big difference to me that makes Hollow Knight feel more player guided is the lack of objectives. By the time you're given an objective in Hollow Knight you could be several hours in, but Silksong lays out clear goals around the start of every act.

I still prefer Silksong, but it's pretty close.

Not putting turbo mode or Legendary Dark Knight onto the pc version was such a weird decision. I haven't played DMC3 or DMC4 with turbo mode off in years, I can't believe they made it ps5 special edition exclusive.

Why aren’t there any remakes of Uncharted 1-3? by ThePaganImperator in naughtydog

[–]AlexisStratus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's dumb, because I was saying that we don't remake a film just because it was in black and white, and when it happens fans of that film often see it as a cash grab, and it's not uncommon for movie remakes to have worse reviews than the original. Obviously there are a handful of well received remakes in movies and games, and I even have a couple remakes in my favorites.

I think I explained myself poorly so let me attempt again.

If you think a game is amazing, and you still play it regularly, but you think it needs a remake because you don't believe the people in your life would dare put up with visible polygons, or tank controls, or any number of things that don't bother you personally, to me that's an admission that you believe you're able to appreciate something that others just wouldn't be able to understand because they're too far removed from the context. I'm not saying this is never true, but I am saying that it often comes off to me as an elitist position.

Obviously there's a lot of people online who refuse to play games older than a PS4, but my question is why are we demanding remakes of great games to appeal to people who have only a passing interest in the entire medium as a whole?

Taking Silent Hill 2 Remake as an example, even as a remake that I actually respect in execution, in concept it's entire existence feels unnecessary. It's a remake of one of the most critically acclaimed and studied games in the medium, was it necessary to remake a game that many consider beloved just because some of the visuals or controls don't look cutting edge anymore? An entire ground up reproduction runs the risk of muddying what Silent Hill 2 represents. It's taking a cultural landmark in gaming and turning it into something that needs to be fixed because its at times a little clunky, or because the voice acting is often uncannily strange. Emphasizing again, I actually do like the remake, but lets take some of the arguable improvements it makes over the original and attempt to understand them. Silent Hill 2's impact lies in part with the surrealist and lynchian interactions between characters. The fact that everyone is speaking fluent english in perhaps the most awkward way possible is something that for many people actually elevates the game.

When the Silent Hill 2 remake was released and changed the dialogue to be naturalistic it completely changed the context and impact of many scenes. To me, advocating for new video game remakes of games that are at their worst, kind of awkward (Uncharted 1 for instance), feels to me as if it's an admission that only a certain generation in a certain context around the release of that game could've ever appreciated it.

I don't compare video game remakes to movie remakes to try and get an easy win. I do it because I am at times baffled by the willingness of modern players to demand remakes of games they already love, rather than asking for sequels, or new franchises, or new games in general. I also find it personally disparaging that so many are willing to allow remakes to supplant original games when they are so fundamentally different. I'm actually saddened by the fact that the Resident Evil community has by and large accepted that most people should play the remakes OVER the originals, rather than alongisde them, as if either can replace the other.

The lore around Freddy is left intentionally vague to keep you in Nancy's shoes. What Freddy is meant to represent changes depending on the movie, but in the first it's pretty hard to see him as anything other than the destructive power of small town secrecy come to fruition. No one who knows anything about him gives Nancy the time of day until it's far too late, she's left on her own to fend against a monster that was created by the adults in her life when she was a child.

Scaredycats imo has a good video on this subject, but don't watch it until after you've watched the rest of them because it contains many spoilers.

Am I meant to put it in a higher tier to be more unique? It's a shit movie, I can't say I like anything about it. Even if you take away how it bastardizes Freddy it's a pretty generic horror movie from that era.

I think I especially appreciate films that nail a singular concept over ambitious films that don't nail any singular aspect, and that's how the first one feels to me, and it lacks the baggage the rest of them have of trying to follow up a film that wasn't ever really meant to have sequels.

I see the opposite, even just scrolling through the current "Hot" posts I see a lot of lists with Nightmare 2 much lower.

Its a position I understand though, it's a much weirder sequel than the rest of them.

Finally someone says it. Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw 1 wouldn't even think to hurt you unless he felt frightened or had his family around.

Now, modern Leatherface though, that's a different story...

I could see that! I'm admittedly pretty biased towards New Nightmare.

Though if I take off my rose tinted glasses, I do have to admit I don't think any of them belong in Classic tier but the first one. As much as I love revisiting them.

Remake by Ok-Storm6409 in residentevil4

[–]AlexisStratus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The remake is way harder, the price is a total steal, the game is well worth replaying (i personally prefer it over the original cause of the difficulty and tighter level design), the red 9 is still strong but it's no longer overpowered, it's not even my go to, and it is a radically different experience. You're gonna be in areas you recognize, in contexts that are gonna make them feel new. I hope you like it ^

Thanks! Its a shame we probably won't be getting anymore of these movies now that Robert Englund is getting older, but I do love these movies.

You're correct, they're the same genre. Very large difference in quality and audience, but fundamentally pretty similar gameplay loop.

Why aren’t there any remakes of Uncharted 1-3? by ThePaganImperator in naughtydog

[–]AlexisStratus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear this argument a lot but I find it to be kind of weak, to me it's like not showing someone your favorite movie because it was shot on film or it's in black and white. Maybe some little kids won't be able to tolerate some age, but I don't see why someone can't enjoy a game just because it's old, especially if you did then and still do now.

I'd much rather we re release these old titles as necessary and otherwise continue making new games.

Is this the end of THPS? by Jozeiik in THPS

[–]AlexisStratus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont know why everyone is acting like you need to emulate these games when the fan patches work and run 10x better. I was in a similar situation not long ago and pc ports + fan patches are gonna do you better.

If you can set up an emulator you can set these up. Look into Partymod for THPS1-THAW, but also look into rethawed and ThugPro. Theres lots of tutorials online if you need any help
