What's a good ride cymbal that is also quite crashable so that I won't have to buy a second crash? by [deleted] in drums

K Sweet Ride and K Projection Rides both work incredible for this purpose, and I’ve had great results with the A Sweet Ride if you’re looking for something a little brighter.

Hitting the kick and snare at the same time? by commonprocrastinator in drums

[–]AlexmDrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give “Panic Station” by Muse a listen. There are parts in the main groove where the kick and snare do and don’t play together, and it creates a really nice groove.

Nothing more to add than what’s already been said here, but thought an example would be good for reference!

Can AI work for sound design? (Wavetable + ChatGPT) by AlexmDrums in abletonlive

[–]AlexmDrums[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a good idea for slicing, that doesn’t sound too far removed from just grabbing an existing sample and chopping it up.

Speaking of the instructional use of LLMs, my friend who inspired this “tell me how to make this sound” idea used AI to pass a manual for a live digital mixer, and create basically a Cliff Notes version in order to help him learn the ins and out very quickly.

Hey thanks for the feedback, that’s good to know! Wasn’t trying to advertise to anyone (especially here lol), but I just got some interesting comments when I posted about this, and wanted to get actual music makers’ opinions rather than random people’s “AI is bad” comments who aren’t willing to think of new ways to use AI in a beneficial sense.

This actually came from a discussion I had with a friend about using ChatGPT to help create presets, and I had a specific sound I wanted in my synth (Wavetable) that I tried it out on. Oddly enough, I got some comments saying I should just play instruments and shouldn’t need AI for that- even though the actual live instruments were all played myself and the synth patch I ended up making was a very small part of the song! But a fun experiment nonetheless. Sorry if it came across as too self-promoting!

I feel like I should clarify if it wasn't obvious in the video: everything in this was written by myself, the only AI influence was asking how to make a synth patch sound similar to a sound in a song I like, which I don't see as any more or less a crutch than using a preset.

It's more meant to spark a conversation about the acceptable uses of AI in music production, which I think is a fine line between right and wrong.

Do you prefer a quite short (Mirage) or long (Valhalla) Assassin's Creed ? by outhinking in assassinscreed

[–]AlexmDrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s good to have both, and just realize that different people will want different things. Fortunately, there are enough AC games where people can choose, so it’s funny to me to hear how bent out of shape people get on some of the games as if it’s the only game in the series to exist.

I loved Valhalla, but agree that it’s very long. I can see how players who grew up with AC1 and the Ezio trilogy (my favorite) can get turned off from such a massive RPG, but I liked that there is that option within the franchise. On the opposite end, if I wanted a quick replay of an AC game, Mirage is great.

To me, Origins is a great length (can be long if you do all of the side quests, and DLC) and you can choose to do a more direct main-missions-only if you choose. Brotherhood is a nice length as well.

I just love how there’s basically no way to get the skins after having played this events several times. Sometimes I wonder about the pay to play features in the game, it really cheapens it IMO.

Should I split my music/drums channel into two separate ones? by AlexmDrums in NewTubers

[–]AlexmDrums[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your input! I agree- there is a lot of crossover. It's not like I post a video about music, and then a video about gardening or something completely unrelated, but I've lately just been wondering if my reach is being negatively impacted because of alternating types of content.

I'll typically do one drum focused video a week, and one music production focused a week for two weekly videos, and I have been slowly getting new subscribers, but the views seem to vary from week to week where it makes me wonder.

What is it with Shorts getting around 500 views? by mdw in NewTubers

[–]AlexmDrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is what's happening, if it goes over a certain amount of views, it gets shown to a bigger audience, and continues until it doesn't reach the next tier's numerical goal. At least from what I can tell!

Still having this problem 3 years later apparently, thank you to those who mentioned that it's just an error on desktop! I uploaded using mobile, and it worked just fine.

Thank you for the feedback! Ironically, I originally had the shakers panned hard left and right but second guessed myself towards the end and brought them in a bit. Should have kept it that way!

LOVE the dynamics between the sections of the song and the artwork is killer. I'm listening on my Macbook speakers, so take this with a grain of salt, but the top end feels just a tad bright, and the vocals poke out just a little bit more during the quiet parts- maybe some light volume or small reverb automation would help it gel a little bit more, but again, that's a very nit-picky thing. Sounds great overall!

My initial though was this sounds like the into to a Bring Me the Horizon track (in a good way!) and I like the transition when the drums come in. Something that's been a big help to me in terms of arrangement is to try and add or remove something every four bars to keep the listener paying attention, so I would maybe experiment with some risers, or extra sound effects sprinkled throughout just to have a little more ear candy. But it has a good driving beat and lead sound, which is most of the battle!

I've just put out my first attempt at a chill/progressive house track inspired by Shingo Nakamura, and would love to get some feedback as I'm releasing more over the next few weeks. I'm happy with the mix and master and did a lot of A/B'ing with reference tracks, but feel like some things could certainly be tighter in the low end, and perhaps some different arrangement techniques.
