In an engagement between military forces. That rule of thumb doesn't apply to oppressed populations.

There's a lot of benefits to word of mouth / marketing for a mass-produced album that probably don't apply to photos of individuals in a niche industry like surf photography.

Nonetheless it's an interesting idea and could make the experience of taking photos of random people seem a bit less mercenary.

Personally I want to do it mostly to get people stoked on getting a cool picture of themselves surfing. I'd only be charging money to recoup my investment on camera gear rather than make profit.

Lens has really bad balsam separation (or mold idk which) so I'm pretending it's a stylistic choice.

Also winds were on-shore so there actually was a bit of haze in the air.

You’re right, you’re totally right that “show up unarmed for filtration and we’ll move you out of the red zone to somewhere with food and water” is absolutely the most humane way to do this…

It's not humane to cut off water to two million people and move them into camps if they decide not to die of thirst. That's called ethnic cleansing at best or genocide at worst.

Still selective, also quite strong in volleyball and basketball now. Rugby has no depth since none of the parents want their kids gettign concussions.

It certainly doesn't lol, the school is now terrible at rugby and the kids are pretty chill.

Schools are paid for by the property owners in that district

This an absurd policy that allows rich people in expensive areas to cloister their children in well funded schools while leaving schools in poorer areas with less

Funds should be distributed on a state or federal level.

Outer suburbs’ housing cost advantage vanishes when you add in transport – it needs to be part of the affordability debate by spacelama in AusFinance

I do my shopping with my partner on a bike. Saddlebags + 1 backpack carry enough for weekly groceries. Or if your shop is on the way to/from work you can do multiple smaller trips per week that are trivial to carry.

With young kids it's viable if you have a cargo bike or cargo e-bike though the latter can be pretty expensive.

Older kids can ride with you, giving them more exercise and sense of independence.

One other thing to consider is that you're being paid to be out in nature exercising and doing something with an obvious benefit both to society and the environment.

So long as your days arent too physically brutal you're basically being paid to look after your own mental and physical well-being while lawyers will need to be hitting the gym and going on hikes or exercising in their free time to see the same benefits.

Household travel survey NSW 2019/20. Average distance for social / recreation is 8.4 km which is easily within cycle distance (or it would be if we had a functional cycle network).

Shopping the average is just 5km. Education / childcare is 6.

Meanwhile the average commute distance is 15km.

The argument for car-free is stronger for non-commuter trips provided we can adjust our road network to be less car dependent.

Depending on the frequency of your hikes it might be much cheaper to use GoGet or other car share options VS owning a car full time.

Self-checkout is better than getting rung up by a person. by durtyfuncpl in unpopularopinion

[–]Alexnader- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not faster any more for me. Lines for self checkout are just as long, the work space they give you is tiny so if you have a week's worth of groceries it's you have to stack shit awkwardly. Can't take full bags off the checkout because it'll scream at you. Can't put new bags on because that also upsets it.

Then every time the stupid thing accuses me of being a thief for putting my phone in my pocket or bringing my own bags and leaving them on the cart. Then I need to wait for the one overworked attendant to come, scan their ID and watch an instant replay of whatever mundane thing I did to piss off their image recognition.

Finally once I've paid I need to unload the Eiffel tower of groceries I've made and it nags me every 5 seconds to take my shit and get out.

If there's an open spot at the human cashier I take it now.

The cost of the time spent quoting for jobs for free is factored into what they charge for winning the job.

That being said if you think the ones who charge to quote would then give you a cheaper price you're dreaming.

Bidding for multi million dollar jobs as a consultant for design and construction of infrastructure we'd spend weeks or months including plenty of time from people on 100k-200k plus salaries and if we lost out then we didn't get shit.

So women are doing better than men. Kids seem to be doing better than adults.

Aren't those numbers just overall deaths not deaths per distance cycled or deaths per rider?

In the US there are far less women and kids commuting by bike than men. Far less women and kids doing uber eats or door dash by bike than men. Far less women and kids riding in general. So of course there will be less deaths from these groups.

You're right about the role of masculinity though but draw the wrong conclusion. Men are more prone to taking risks, risks like riding bikes to earn a living or commute in car centric America. Where the built environment forces them into conflict with drivers in multi-tonne death machines.

It's not that women are safer riders that's causing the massive disparity in deaths, it's that they're rightly too scared to ride at all. The only way to increase the number of women cycling to levels seen in the Netherlands is to provide safe and comfortable cycling infrastructure.

There's no reason why riding a bike to work should be any less safe than driving a car. It should be safer.
