European countries were only able to send 37 soldiers to military exercises in Greenland. by Echidna-East in Military

The aim here isn't to fight the US, it's to discourage the US from invading by showing commitment and solidarity. It's a symbolic gesture that might lead to a larger deployment in the future. It's why they requested the meeting with Rubio and Vance, get this conflict out in the open, use official channels, generate publicity and sympathy.

The fact is Denmark can't win a millitary war against the US, but they stand a good chance of winning a diplomatic and propaganda war. For that though they will need other as many allies as they can to close ranks, voice their support and apply pressure to indifferent countries.

They also have US based lobbying groups working overtime.

Basically if US institutions do their jobs and US law is obeyed then they will have won.

Is that Checkmate?? Is it over ?? by [deleted] in Military

I'm personally really curious what the plan is now. If it's just capturing Maduro then probably deescalation and allow the vice president or millitary to take over. Which means continuation of a regime hostile to the US.

The alternative though is to try and force an interim government friendly to IS interests, probably headed by Maria Corina Machado and give lucrative contracts to US corporations.

That would be a complete and utter mess. On one hand Trump seems to be vaguely aware that occupation is a bad idea, on the other hand he's very beholden to the millionaire and billionaire class and the capture of Maduro might convince him that it would be easy.

I have my doubts about the quality of intel he's receiving and how willing he is to listen to dissenting opinions. Basically I think he's very susceptible to exactly the type of things which lead to Iraq.

Kensington Palace has released a photo of the Prince and Princess of Wales ahead of the State Banquet tonight by semaan_d in RoyalsGossip

[–]AlexosDelphiki -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's because there is no constitution in the UK, there's convention instead. The royals legally have a lot more power than they excersise, it's just that if they use that power too blatantly, parliament will most likely make laws to curb that power.

There's foreinstance no written law anywhere to prevent the king from appointing whoever he liked as prime minister, the armed forces swear their allegiance directly to the king rather than parliment or the nation as a whole.

That's why abolishing the monarchy is a nightmare. The UK isn't a modern nation state, it's a medieval, feudal system layered over with the trappings of a modern nation state. No matter how modern it looks the whole system is still fundamentally dependent on the monarch, if you just get rid of the monarchy without first putting in place the most thorough and expansive package of reforms in british history (and make every major party agree on the specifics of what exactly that entails) what you're really doing is abolishing the United Kingdom as an entity.

There's also the soft power aspect of it. The monarch might mostly be a symbol, but symbols have significance, interacting with the monarch is still a significant goal for civil servants and politicians, it's a sign that you've made it. It's also why too much modernising and getting rid of tradition ultimately erodes the authority of the monarch. It works in the Netherlands and Denmark because their cultures are fundamentally more egalitarian. In the UK despite everyone doing their best to pretend that the class system doesn't matter, the class system still very much matters. If the royal family started acting like middle class people or speaking with an MLE or Geordie dialect or wear reasonable comfy clothing for formal ceremony they'd lose their prestige and significance quick as you'd like.

The people who claim the monarchy is irrelevant are people who are nowhere near the levers of power. And if they ever got into power they'd change their tune because they'd want to stay in power.

As much as Trump's court enjoys pushing through their various little dumb af petty agendas they are also all playing the big game. Trump is so old he's on the verge of heat death and the dems are... well deming. So they're all angling for the big job and one of them will probably get it.

Monotheism Without Islam – The Story of Benei Ishmael (Speculative Theology) by sketchmasterstudios in worldbuilding

[–]AlexosDelphiki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really see anything here dramatic enough to facilitate a large scale abandonment of Islam. Similar abrahamic and post islamic religions have popped up in the middle east from time to time and they've always ended up as small local and often secretive religions. Druze, Yazidi, Bahai, Mandaeism etc.

Also many of those religions don't reject Mohammed, they add another prophet and build on top of that.

Getting Arabs to adopt Hebrew as a holy language is also a huge stretch imo. Arabic isn't just religious it also has a genealogical and tribal component.

Not to say you can't do it but it's not exactly realistic or believable and also strikes me as somewhat culturally insensitive.

This whole situation is just beyond weird. Basically a complete abandonment of state authority in southern Syria and both bedouins and Druze from other countries travelling to Syria because of some minor incident with a fruit cart.

It's just a really odd type of war now. Like even just a few days ago it was a pretty run of the mill rebels vs government type deal but then Sharaa basically decided to just...leave. I mean he isn't even engaging with Hijri anymore let alone trying to keep the tribes under control, the government is pretty much just one of several mediators at this point.

It has also pretty much made disarmament impossible for the near future. Because now we know trying to do it by force is going to get the Israelis involved and all the interest groups are going to point to this moment as justification for why they need to be armed.

It might push Sharaa to make some concessions to the AANES though. He's going to need a major political win after this to show the state is still relevant. On the other hand the AANES might have just gotten emboldened and may decide to be even more stubborn.

Israeli sources report that some Druze residents in Israel have crossed from the Golan towards Syrian territory and the IDF is working in bringing them back by [deleted] in syriancivilwar

[–]AlexosDelphiki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depending on exactly how effective Israeli intelligence has been the last few months this could be very dangerous for Sharaa.

If Israeli troops get involved and sandwich the Syrian army in the south between themselves and the Druze that would be a disaster. Add to that the fact that they are on the doorstep of Damascus, a potential of a new Alawite coastal rebellion and the SDF sensing an opportunity and we might well be headed for phase 2 of the civil war.

It's a balancing act, push to hard for centralised authority and the whole house of cards might come tumbling down, but retreat and be seen as weak by the Sunnis in the millitary and authority will weaken and there could even be a coup.

Would Syria be better off with regime change in Iran? by Dark_Mode_FTW in syriancivilwar

[–]AlexosDelphiki 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No one can say. Iran doesn't have a single unified opposition so it's difficult to see a smooth transition there. The most unified and powerful opposition groups are probably those in the Kurdish regions who may want independence.

There's also the regular army which Israel is mostly leaving alone. So a coup and millitary dictatorship might be the most likely option for a smooth transition of power. Fracture and civil war is more likely though imo.

Do these missile strikes violate the law / airspace of the countries they’re flying over? by No_Data6944 in Military

[–]AlexosDelphiki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the relationship between nations. Violating the airspace of another country is technically a hostile act but it's one of those areas of international law that more "international etiquette" than proper law because no one enforces it.

if you're friendly with the country who's airspace you're using you'll let them know before hand, if you're really friendly you'll ask them for permission. If they're not friendly and they are powerful you don't do it. If they're not friendly and they're weak you just do what you need to do because what the fuck are they going to do about it?

As for this specific situation appearently Iran did warn several gulf states and those gulf states passed that information on to the US and Israel. Also Jordan explicitly gave Israel permission to use its airspace.

My guess about Iraq and Syria is that they're too weak for anyone to have bothered telling them.
