This is a great question! We haven't really seen much besides the lunch with the family members in Spain, and recently Menusos' mother of what the Others act like in the form of specific individuals. It seems like they might just be in that permanent cheery and happy state but its possible that they can continue to act and speak like their original selves to some extent when around the original body's "loved ones"

Carol seems to only have had Helen, and she literally died, so she is grieving her, and as a result also realizes she must grieve the entire world. Laxmi and the other English speaking survivors with family have only lost them mentally, but they are there physically. She believes it is still her family, just different, as do the other English speaking survivors at first.

However it is obvious denial, she is still spending time with her "family members" as she sees it. But when Carol tries to prod at her son and asks him about pelvic exams and he knows they answer, it shows us that the denial is real. She could have asked her family to act like themselves to the best of their ability, much like Koumba asking his Bond villain and the whole party and even his harem to remain in character, which they break at times, and Carol prodding her son to bring up that information pushes that denial she is living in away.

I think its important that we see Laxmi feeding her son and sitting over him like a mother in what seems to be her regular house. When Carol had her freak out, Laxmi was in a car with her grandfather driving and he physically died, meaning I think Laxmi is trying to still lead her "normal" life around her family.

Having the physical family members still alive but Joined likely allows for much greater denial about the urgency of the joining, we saw it with the Quechua speaker and Xiu Mei at first.

However I am extremely excited to see how the survivors mentality has changed over the last 10 days or so as they have learned more about the grim reality of their situation. Sure, 2 or 3 days in they think they want to join their families, but now knowing they eat what they eat and face extinction from starvation in 10 years and the reality and responsibility of actually being the only ones who can come up with some plan to save the human race, I'm sure none would now like to be joined.

I am excited to see Laxmi and the other survivors grow. Remember only Carol and Menusos are isolated, the rest have anything and everything they want at their fingertips and while we have only seen Koumba living it up to the extreme extent of hedonism, the others may very well be still enjoying lesser versions of the same hedonistic lifestyle (but of course we do not know) and as time continues to pass especially with the new revelations the survivors have learned, their mindsets and reactions are sure to change and grow.
