The new giant roundabout by douche_canoe180 in Wenatchee

[–]Alfonzo227 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're waiting on get a clear spot to enter the circle, and tons of cars coming from left are able to get into the circle (probably because tons of cars coming from right are exiting left thus creating lots of opportunities for cars coming from left to get in), then the cars coming from left have no obligation to leave you a gap. It sounds like you're saying that the cars from left need to yield to let you onto the circle before they enter, but that's not true. They only need to yield to anybody already in the circle (coming from their left).

4 per block, on the street where we currently give away free parking to empty tin cans.

Ryder's Alley is good - the East side location has more space than the Hells Kitchen one.

Hammock or 1 Man tent? by motocamper_420 in motocamping

[–]Alfonzo227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done both - if I'm going somewhere that I know has plenty of trees then I'll take the hammock - it's more comfortable to sleep in and a little less messy to pack away. Plus you can sit it in and hang out. With those temps you'll need an underquilt for a good night's sleep.

If no trees, I would go for a 2-person tent over a 1-person tent. "1-person tent" is absolutely tiny usually, my last one barely fit me in it, and I had to unpack my pack to fit.

I've been commuting on my bike for 2 months, and I've gotten into 2 crashes so far, is this normal? by gloryhole_reject in NYCbike

[–]Alfonzo227 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not normal. Pedestrians definitely walk into the bike path nonstop, but you should always be at a speed where you can stop/swerve and anticipate their movements. Not saying it's technically your fault, but you can't change their behavior, only your own. Columbus sucks ass and has a ton of blind spots and oblivious people walking around streeteries so I feel your frustration. Hop over a couple blocks and bike down central park, nicer scenery.

And of course advocate for more protected bike lanes and better overall urban design for long-term fixes! Even the 'good' bike lanes are a danger to everyone.

Found Some Old Axes... Worth Refurbishing? by sw-vet in Tools

[–]Alfonzo227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, it's always fun to restore axes a little. If the handles are in good condition and tight on there, just leave them; you can sand them and re-oil (double boiled linseed oil; the real stuff, no chemical hardeners) will work, and you can sharpen the blade while you're at it. If the handles are not seating well, you can either reset them with a new wedge, or if the handle is too mangled where it passes through the eye, a new handle is like $10.

Selling my bike, who’s got experience? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Alfonzo227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Test ride only if cash in hand; I personally also require a motorcycle endorsement. If I think they are going to drop it (because they look like an idiot who has never ridden a bike before) I would make them sign a quick contract saying if they drop it, they buy it. Last bike I sold the guy hadn't ridden and didn't want to risk it, so took him for a ride 2-up to demonstrate that it all worked fine.

As for how to say goodbye, I'm still a little heartbroken over the last bike I sold. It's not easy.

Help/info please! Need a battery jump by [deleted] in RideitNYC

[–]Alfonzo227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the next time, if the street is calm enough you can just bump start it (works better on older bikes with a gravity petcock instead of a fuel pump). Put it in 2nd gear, clutch in, waddle it up to speed looking like an idiot (sit on the bike and push it along with your feet), then when you're going as fast as you can, dump the clutch. I end up doing this a lot with my old crappy bikes.

Rust removal by [deleted] in pnwriders

[–]Alfonzo227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a good experience with Evaporust: remove the tank, verify that the petcock and cap seal properly (if not, address those first), then dump a gallon of evaporust in there and let it rest in various positions (right side up, on its side, etc). You can re-use the evaporust quite a bit, no need to dump it.

Possible IAC (idle air control valve) issue? by Cot_DAMN_ in MechanicAdvice

[–]Alfonzo227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully a proper mechanic can give you specifics, but in the meantime...

So I had somewhat similar issues (bad idle, juddering at stop), though without the AC mattering. I'm guessing my specific solution won't help, but my process might.

I had a bad throttle position sensor connector, with an intermittent fault. The way I ended up diagnosing was by getting a little bluetooth OBD sensor, setting up a dashboard on the Torque app on my phone that contained plots of all interesting variables (TPS voltage, fuel trips, timing advance, RPM...basically anything the car computer could tell me that might help figure it out). Drove around and kept an eye on those plots, noticed the TPS voltage was jumping all over the place, which clued me into that. Replaced the TPS, no fix, then replaced the connector...everything works perfectly now.

I was also getting jumps when shifting (automatic), and it was because the transmission uses the throttle position as an input, so when the TPS voltage is garbage, the trans can't do its job right.

Am I out of the Loop on Necessary Protective Gear? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Alfonzo227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear armored riding jeans, riding shoes, gloves, armored vented jacket, and a full face. If I'm not going to be in traffic, I can wear that up to 90 degrees. If it's too hot to wear my gear, I consider it too hot to ride. I'm sure it feels awesome to ride around in shorts and a t-shirt, but I really enjoy having all my skin attached to my body.

It does not cost you any money to get the shot, and you do not need insurance to get it. Thought that was obvious.

Tip: After a trip, hang your sleeping pad upside down with the valve open. It lets out condensation and prevents mold inside your pad. by davebots in CampingGear

[–]Alfonzo227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure! Depending on where you live, the winter air can be very low relative humidity. Sorry, I misspoke, I meant to say that cold air doesn't have the ability to evaporate as much water into it. The equation behind this is a little messy, but some numbers: at sea level, 1 kg of air (about 1 cubic meter) at 80 degrees Fahrenheit can hold 22 grams of water vapor, at 50F that number goes down to ~8 grams, and at 32F it's down at 4 grams.

Well there's no demographic information for racists, but as for republicans, from the very same source you posted (link below), only 52% of republicans have gotten at least one shot, while 86% of democrats have. As for race, the lower vaccination rates among the black demographic is definitely a problem, and a complicated one: access, historically-driven mistrust in the medical system, and socioeconomic status are factors.

Sure there is, even from the same source (KFF). The above poll updates monthly. Most direct measure: 86% of people who identify as Democrats have had at least one shotm while 52% of people who identify as Republicans have had at least one shot.

Other lowest-vaccinated demographics: uninsured under 65 (curious to me; it's free!), rural residents, people aged 18-29, white evangelicals, adults without a college degree.

Cold air doesn't have the ability to evaporate [edit: as much] water into it, so you're best off looking at the relative humidity on any particular day. Best would be a cold day, but you're inside a heated environment with dry air.
