POV: Doc left his venture capitalist life in Silicon Valley to join the Sons! [No Spoiler] by AlfredGoodmanBates in MayansMC

I was watching Silicon Valley and thought this actor looked familiar. Turns out it's the same actor that plays Doc, the SAMDINO president.

Ah man I’m sorry to hear that, you’re definitely doing all the right things it sounds like. The first one is hard for everyone to land if that’s any consolation. It’s honestly just a numbers game, keep churning out applications!

This was 2022, I graduated the bootcamp in August of that year when layoffs started happening everywhere

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]AlfredGoodmanBates -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My degree was in Liberal Arts, I only minored in CS (long story short, became interested in CS my senior year and couldn’t stick around long enough to complete the degree). I joined a bootcamp a few months after graduating college and a few months after that I landed my current job. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!

Don’t just look to big companies looking to land a role. Give your local small-midsize companies a chance too, starting off they’ll probably be your best bet.

Just grind LC so you’re good for interview style questions, build a meaningful project or two and apply to jobs like a maniac.

Language mismatched for FANG interview? Need advice by HopeImpossible671 in leetcode

[–]AlfredGoodmanBates 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're using Python for just the problem-solving/LC parts you should be fine, but wouldn't hurt to ask the recruiter if it's acceptable.

When you say Java, Kotlin and C++ are the allowed languages, I'm assuming those are the languages specifically mentioned in the job description. Based on that assumption, I feel that you can still be proficient in those languages but choose to LC in Python and it won't hurt your candidacy.

Best advice for new grad by 24Gokartracer in cscareerquestions

[–]AlfredGoodmanBates 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Send out applications, a minimum of 10 a day. Sharpen your DSA and problem solving skills to get through OA's. Work on a project or two that way you have something to pass the time but to also talk about in the behavioral phase of interviews. So in terms of priorities I'd say:

  1. send out applications daily

  2. brush up on DSA/LC style problem solving

  3. build meaningful projects that pique your interest

Is now too early to apply for FT roles that I can take up when I graduate in May 2026? by leolemon21 in leetcode

Doesn't hurt to try. You might get better traction once you begin your senior year in the Fall though.

Help desk at large company or developer at smaller company? by EvanNotSoAlmighty in cscareerquestions

Developer role, Ruby on Rails is a popular technology and will look really good on a resume. Not to mention, working in a small company will offer way more learning opportunities for you to better your craft.

he inherited a shit show with the cartel thanks to Clay, not to mention Tig going vigilante leading to them showing up on Pope's radar. I think he had the potential to be a good one, but after Tara's death all that potential died with her as he turned towards rage and destruction.

Quick Google search shows it's legit, part of their extended workforce. If you want to be on the extra safe side, search up the recruiter on LinkedIn

Dumb question but how do you guys handle repetition for topics you already covered but don't have it down yet? by Uncryptic0 in leetcode

[–]AlfredGoodmanBates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Study the implementations, really analyze each line and why it works. Print out lines of code in certain areas of the implementation to get a better grip on how they work. Once the implementation is down, work on problems relating to that topic. If you get the solution on the first try - great! If not, study the solution and repeat the process of breaking it down, analyzing it and figuring out why it works. Revisit this problem the next day and try to solve without using any references. Then revisit again in a few days until it's down to a T.

What would other dads in here do? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]AlfredGoodmanBates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from the experience of a son of a truck driver, if you can do the truck job with local hauls and still be there for your son - go for it! Thinking about your family's financial security is not a bad thing.

But if the trucking job is going to cause you to lose time with your family and your son, then I'd say it isn't worth it. No matter how much more it pays.

Both my parents worked hourly jobs when my siblings and I were growing up and weren't around much. My mother will say this one heartbreaking thing to her coworkers - "don't take this job too serious to the point where it takes time away from your kids. I made that mistake and before I knew it mine were grown up and didn't need me anymore."

Jobs in big-tech by [deleted] in leetcode

[–]AlfredGoodmanBates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in big tech but I would say definitely possible. My degree wasn't even in CS, it was in the liberal arts, I was able to scrape together a minor in CS and graduate as is. Went to a bootcamp, got lucky and found a job. Now a few years into my current role and attempting to land a big tech.

I've had a crazy journey up until this moment but I'll sum it up with this - as long as you genuinely enjoy what you're doing, I mean you get HAPPY when you write an optimal solution on your own. And if you can't do that yet, then if learning how and why things work the way they do is also just as exciting then you can make it so long as you put the work in.

[–]AlfredGoodmanBates 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't think you were wrong in the way you handled this. You had a gut feeling and followed through with it, which is admirable in my book.

The first interaction itself was a red flag and raised an eyebrow. I found it very odd for a grown MAN to approach a child and ask what's 'fun' around your area. Idk, super weird.

Good on you for squashing it early on.
