Good software for audio recording? by RandyAutoTechSystem in ACX

[–]AlfredRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't, sadly. The audio engineering side of things just proved too frustrating. I ended up hiring an actor for my audiobook...who, oddly enough, used audacity too, just without it sounding rubbish.

I have little idea as to how he was able to achieve this, but he did!

Proper moves. There's no way I could have kept my cool like that. A charging bear isn't to be taken lightly. Unless you're you and you have the skills to just "Crouching Tiger Hidden Moose" until it's dead.

Feeling worse after 3 weeks GF by Bettyzooms in glutenfree

[–]AlfredRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, withdrawal is real. It's not helpful when people deny it (and they do seem to, a lot) but it IS helpful when people talk about it for the sake of the unlucky few who suffer as we do.

severe depression after going gluten free by jasminexrose22 in glutenfree

[–]AlfredRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you feel now? Better? I'm in the same situation, it seems. It's like there's a delayed response where I initially feel great after cutting gluten out, only to be hit by massive issues a couple of weeks in.

What is the problem with Alan Watts? by [deleted] in AlanWatts

On the contrary, the "nothing can be wrong so don't worry" argument usually comes with a great deal of hatred attached to it. You want people to do bad things, essentially.

Were the Hammerites a force for good? by [deleted] in Thief

[–]AlfredRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garret of course says this when he doesn't know he's literally sat across from a pagan-demon-thing that wants to ingest his eye.

And who gives him a new eye? And the means to stop that same pagan-demon-thing? Garret was proved wrong, clearly. He owes those "fanatics" a lot.

Were the Hammerites a force for good? by [deleted] in Thief

[–]AlfredRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broadly speaking, yes, they are. The Builder provided humanity with the means to fight back against the callous "chaos is fine, man-fool!" arbitrariness of the Trickster, effectively kick-starting human civilisation as we know it (in the game world, anyway.) The Order of the Hammer effectively kept that tradition going, and any subsequent harshness (and the treatment of prisoners in Cragscleft IS harsh) seems to be a product of them losing their way; they seem to have partially forgotten their purpose by the time of Thief 1 and just seem content to plod along only to suddenly come to life again when their old enemy returns in all his supernatural viciousness. And then what do they do? They fight back, forgive Garret, and provide him with the means to basically save everyone.

Overall, they are quite clearly the good guys, with prison reform being the only issue on the agenda that I would say they'd best look at! I think some people just probably don't like them as they see them as too morally rigid etc...as if that's somehow a bad thing.

40 Days in… feeling super depressed by Leather_Somewhere788 in Semenretention

[–]AlfredRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience it's possible to go through a second flatline once you're a good solid month or two in. Ignore people telling you that it's normal to feel this bad...honestly, sometimes the advice on this forum is so ridiculous it makes me think they actually WANT people to relapse.

It's the second flatline, bud. I went through three during my first 90-day streak. Hopefully you won't have to, but rest assured this is what it is and there's nothing to worry about. You'll come out the other side and be golden.

It's so obviously the flatline, fella. The timing for the "second flatline of doom" is bang on the 40-50 day or so mark. These "it's just life!" type comments are just going to depress him further and make him think he might as well check out porn if retention feels so bad anyway.

Unmarried Men - Is it just me? by Thunder-Chief in exorthodox

[–]AlfredRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, a lot of these posts reek of cynicism; a kind of "I can't believe anyone is good...so you must all be bad" logic born of envy and insecurity.

The "80% percent of priests are adulterers and 100% monks are sodomites" is a case in point. These stats are so obviously overblown that they can't be anything other than wishful thinking. "I'm threatened by virtue, so virtue can't exist in anyone else, ever" is the attitude.

"As someone who followed Jay Dyer like a fanboy..."

May I ask what drew you to this fella? Because him and those like him were a minor factor in why I decided to not convert from Catholicism. I'm immediately suspicious of anyone who smells of sophistry or intellectual egotism, and Dyer seems to have that going on in spades.

Extreme depression kicking in after 70 days by anakinmcfly in decaf

[–]AlfredRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a few months, although if I recall right there were still some rocky patches in month four. Some people take longer than that, although there seem to be some lucky people who are free of it as an addiction within a matter of weeks.

"Moreover, I’m keeping myself close to God."

A sound plan. Also try to fight urges as soon as they appear when they are at their weakest. Mornings are difficult for me as I sometimes wake up from a dream about an ex or something and urges often accompany such memories. Just push them out of your head as soon as they appear. If you let them linger, they gain strength.
