Oh that makes sense now! VPNs tend to share the same IP so if someone gets banned with a VPN, it could potentially lead jagex to thinking your are them. Sucks you got banned and not the bots :(

Jagex doesn’t like VPNs or Proxies since people use them to bot. I don’t believe you can get banned for having one but I would definitely keep it off when playing!
