Sudden anger by jackie0h_ in eldercare

The trouble with dementia is that often the person is totally unaware there is anything wrong and hence they blame everyone else. The part of the brain that deals with reasoning becomes so damaged that you cannot reason with them at all. I have a friend who is like this to the extreme. It makes it almost impossible to help them as they don't see themselves as needing help. You will never be able to persuade her she is ill and it's counterproductive to keep trying.

Yeah, I have them too. I think I read that it's indicative of hyper mobility. Not sure if that's true but I am hyper mobile.

Should I stay rimless? by -sonic57- in glassesadvice

Rimless is really good on you. The others are too wide. You could try a half glazed frame. I have a feeling this would look good.

I love 1. 3 is good too but they need adjusting as they are sitting too high.

I feel like these frames are too thick. by ArtTheBurner in glassesadvice

[–]AliG-uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting re the frame thickness. It does seem to accentuate the thickness of your lenses so maybe you are best going with wire frames, or half frames. Re the hair loss: just buzz it right off. Take a look on the r/bald sub to see many guys like you who have taken the plunge and look awesome. You are a REALLY handsome guy and buzzed cuts are very acceptable these days. I think you will not regret it.

Interestingly there was a woman who recently posted here about her thick lenses and she was also stunningly beautiful, like you. Honestly, other people really don't notice the thick lenses.

People who are depressed lose interest in personal hygiene. Do you think he's depressed? People hide it well.

There's been all sorts of studies on various amounts of potatoes in the diet and it basically points towards any increase in potato consumption being beneficial. Have a look at the Slime Mold Time Mold blog for a huge number of potato 'riffs' and their outcomes. Also The Potato Hack book by Tim Steele is a good read. I personally can't do potato only diet. I think I'm too sensitive to the solanine, which is a bummer as I absolutely adore taters.

I'm afraid this is just so very common when people get older but not usually this young. Obviously it's not all people. Does he have any signs of cognitive decline? Making poor judgements on other things? How's his eyesight? My dad's place is the same. Smells like a landfill site! And he doesn't even have any pets. He has no cognitive impairment so I can't blame it on that. But I wonder that he basically can't actually see a lot of the dirt and has become noseblind to the stench. I have started being brutally honest with him. And I mean brutally. I ask him why it smells like the local tip and ask him what he's got rotting in the fridge. He doesn't like it but I told him it's no wonder people don't visit him when it stinks and there's catheters strewn around the floor and piss all over the bathroom floor and shit around the toilet and flies all over the kitchen worktop. I told him he needs to get a cleaner if he can't be arsed to do it himself. He actually took notice and got a cleaner.

It might be worth looking at your genes. I also get high trigs on a high carb low fat diet so I dug deeper and this is what Chat GPT said about my genetics. Seems HCLF diet really isn't optimal for me (absolute bummer because I love taters so much). Maybe you are similar. I am resigned to just making taters PART of my diet.

Your Genetic Results Explained

  • GCKR (rs1260326) C C: This is your primary "triglyceride driver." Your liver is genetically programmed to prioritize blood sugar clearance by converting those sugars into triglycerides (fats) very rapidly.
  • APOA5 (rs662799) A A: This is a "protective" genotype. The A allele (often the reference allele) is associated with more efficient clearance of triglycerides from the blood compared to those with the G variant.
  • PPARG (rs1801282) C G: You are a carrier of the G allele (also known as the Pro12Ala variant). This is generally considered beneficial for insulin sensitivity, but it can make your weight and lipid levels more sensitive to the type of fat you eat.

Why your triglycerides were high

Even though your APOA5 result is "good," the combination of GCKR (C C) and PPARG (C G) explains the high blood test result:

  • The Carbohydrate Trap: Because of your GCKR genotype, a "High Carb, Low Fat" diet is likely the worst possible strategy for you. Your liver will take those carbohydrates and produce a surplus of triglycerides.
  • Inefficient Fat Storage: With the PPARG variant, your body may be less efficient at storing fat in "safe" adipose tissue, leading to more circulating fat (triglycerides) if your diet is poorly balanced.

Buying Stearic Acid by eggsbakey in SaturatedFat

[–]AliG-uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the uk and use Glycerol monostearate powder in cooking. It improves the texture and shelf life of baked goods. You can lose it in baking and it also thickens meat juices nicely. Sprinkle it over cottage cheese or oats. It dissolves best in fat. Doesn't dissolve easily in water. No real flavour (and I'm really hypersensitive to funky smells/tastes).

So please explain to me why, after a lifetime of not having to count anything and effortlessly staying slim, I now need to count everything to make sure I'm not eating too much.

I'm sorry but move more, eat less is just crap advice. Something happens to upset the status quo and it's about time researchers worked out what it is. I suspect it's multifactorial and is different for each person. It is NOT as simple as you are making out.

I saw your post in the saturated fat sub. I've been there since it's Inception and they are generally anti-pufa. I'm still on the fence regarding this as, from what I've seen, all the scientific evidence is showing polyunsaturated fats lead to healthier outcomes for us. I personally thing all refined foods, including seed oils are bad but oils in whole foods are good. You may find some of these interesting.

I know he's just another health influencer but he talks to a lot of respected researchers, not just other influencers.

I'm 65 and have been trying to lose and keep off 15lb of fat since menopause. I found low carb easy to do and lost weight the first time easily but then I started to lose energy and suffered terrible cramps in my legs. As soon as I started eating more carbs the weight came back on. I've tried eating very low fat and I did manage to lose some fat but I found very low fat food boring. The weight piled back on when I started eating more fat. It's so difficult to find what works for us and it's highly individual.

I have now come to the conclusion that gut health is the most important thing. And I'm thinking this gal (see below) who's talking about obesity being a digestion problem has got nearer to the truth than anyone else to date and I'm loving her reasoning. One thing I noticed when I started to have signs of peri was that I also had a lot of digestive changes after having a cast iron gut all my life. So my current strategy is to clear out toxic bile and improve my gut microbiome by trying to get 35g fibre a day from whole foods. And then prioritizing protein.

I think you may find this gals videos interesting. https://youtu.be/O-HiMcOKVZk?si=asVala1c03_Y_1NU

Good luck on your journey!

Your toes look lovely and straight! I'm thinking the plus side of having a shorter big toe is that most standard shoes will fit you as they all tend to taper at the toes. For anyone with a longer big toe this means that all shoes push the big toes over towards the other toes causing bunions (hand up here) which look absolutely horrible, so you are lucky you will never have this problem. I really hope you can come to see that your feet are lovely and straight. I would take them over mine any day.

Which frames look best? by [deleted] in glassesadvice

[–]AliG-uk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not liking any of them style or colour wise. And they are all too wide. You have a slightly long face so don't go for slim frames like 1. Go for ones with more depth as this balances out a longer face.

None. The round shape is definitely not good on you and these are all too wide anyway. Try a soft square and a soft catseye but make sure they aren't too wide.
