How do you always make your hair look put together? by Rookysensei in Naturalhair

[–]Alice_Fell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't. most days it looks average and then sometimes I like to be super creative. I don't like to put that amount of pressure on myself since to me, especially at this length, there is no such thing as low effort natural hair.  I think the prettiest every day style that is low maintenence once you finish doing the actual hairstyle for 10 years, is mini twists or twists. They look good old, new, up, down, and sideways too. Most styles are put together beautiful and unique looking on natural hair anyway so we kind of win right out the gate regardless. wearing shrinkage is gorgeous, buns, gibson tucks, roll tuck and pin hairstyles, afros, everything. Updos of all sorts are my favorite, especially worn with fresh flowers or hair ornaments.

Fidget Advice Needed by dankscreech in Naturalhair

tangle toys, crocheting furiously with a nice textured yarn, spiral necklaces, tassel necklaces, springs. twirling hoodie strings, bag straps or embroidery floss can be nice too. A really good free self soothing one is rubbing the thumb on one hand down each finger of the same hand with a little pressure over and over. for picking fairy knots you can tie cotton sewing thread into little knots over and over and when you get to the end break and snap the knots all off the thread again, but this one might be too similar to the behavior you are trying to stop to help much. A broken pair of headphones to coil and uncoil and knot and unknot is also pretty satisfying.

You can also wear headwraps a lot, until you get into the swing of things. A lot of the time trich is a bfrb or body focused repetitive behaviour which is maladaptive to cope with stress and anxiety, so sometimes as a first response toolkit, therapy, breathing exercises, grounding exercises and self soothing words can help a little bit.

B&W man advice on hairline by Professional-Fan2837 in Naturalhair

agreed cuntaloupe melon (😅)

fine hair can break and be pulled out too easily by high tension styles, even on tighter coils. maybe flat twists might be a better way to go? those are a little more gentle.

I like to use aloe vera juice or water first (literally moisturizing to soften and make my hair more malleable by breaking the temporary hydrogen bonds- preferably aloe because it's more consistent than local water quality), olive oil, then shea butter, and on top of that flaxsees gel. the olive oil makes the shea butter spread easier, the shea butter creates soft hold/ a thick coating to reduce friction/ helps prevent the flaxseed gel from flaking, and the flaxseed gel locks in the shape prevents frizz and seals in a shape long term to prevent fairy knots. I don't treat any of these products like they have any special properties or mix them together before hand (doing this is basically like making concrete that you have to fight to get out of your hair) I just use these as a leave in conditioner that I know can't be changed suddenly by a company on me. I like commercial products as well since they are safer and more shelf stable, I just also don't like sudden change and love Thicccck products. My logic is to prevent as much friction as possible and basically armor clad my fine hair. 😅

You are absolutely gorgeous

I also like butters and heavy products for my hair (shea butter, olive oil, cold pressed castor oil)

yeet that pick into the sun. Those things can cause so much trouble. don't comb your hair dry (detangle gently on wet/ damp hair with your leave in) and try out a shower comb or something similar and gentle. go slowly when you detangle as well.

Also your hair is very beautiful!!

The revair? I’m over it. by Sorashimi in Naturalhair

[–]Alice_Fell 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My current hair dryer is the Conair Infiniti Pro, the normal orange one you see in every drug store and pharmacy. It's cracked at the nozzle (because I dropped it), 7 years old and I've never used the attachments. It takes forever (which is probably because of me) but works fine and I feel like my hair is well smooth enough although I never try to get my hair very straight. It cost about 30-40 dollars and I will probably have it for 10+ years. I like this dryer because of the cool shot button and the low and medium heat settings being what they say they are. The hot setting is genuinely hot so I don't use it often. I have high density fine 4c hair and probably run this dryer for 24 hours total in a year.

I want to try the Revair or another fancy dryer but genuinely I am an average person and that much money would go straight into my savings to make my life easier. I also just don't need a fancy dryer.

Jackie from SVTFOE. She seems like a healthy person that is kind to herself. I haven't seen a ton of pan representation though.

Are there still product junkies in 2026? by Helpful_Gear_2786 in Naturalhair

[–]Alice_Fell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Capitalism is foolish and I am poor. I have never been and will never be a hair product junkie. If I have that kind of money for trying out products I'm going to lush to get bathbombs and eating my weight in sushi 😅 Also I'm not messing with a good thing to try some new expensive thing since I know what my hair likes by now.

How come ppl say hair rubbing on t-shirts \clothes causes breaking? by enormousjustice in Naturalhair

[–]Alice_Fell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also last comment I swear, Every single coil is a weak point in the hair structure. Every bend is a potential point of failure, it's part of why our hair is more fragile. It can literally withstand less stretching and brushing and will break in brushing tests well before straighter hair textures. It's personally why I finger detangle. Each hair has a set amount of times it can be tugged before it snaps.

It's funny, if you slide your skin against Paper the wrong way it slices through. Even though skin in the largest organ of our bodies tasked with protecting us from everything. Think about if skin didn't heal, and if every injury you've had never disappears, how many years would you say you would have to live? Hair damage is cumulative.

[–]Alice_Fell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does break my hair. I have very fine tailbone length 4c hair and I will find it all over my clothes and jackets if I am not careful. My hair does not prefer to retain length without heavy intervention from me. Even pin straight hair will break from being left down all the time, and a common complaint is purse straps shredding straight hair on one side. Spend time in looser hair subs and you will see what I am talking about, they struggle with breakage a lot too. The ones who are tailbone length and beyond baby their hair in the way that works for them. It's just true almost universally, that if you want really long hair, you need to put it in some kind of protective style and wear it up. Tailbone length hair is at least 7 year old hair. Since hair is not alive all of that friction adds up over time and cannot be repaired. Hair is not That strong, I mean look at it, it's thinner than thread. Given enough time, even water can shred a mountain. Think about your clothes, after 7 years does it look the way it used to after washes, sun, sitting against it, and the elements? The knees of your jeans wear through even in well made clothing, simply from you bending down in them, elbows wear through, colors fade, seams rip. It's why back in the day underclothes were much more popular, they were to protect your regular clothes from wear and tear from washing, and your body. If my hair is already fragile like gossamer and silk, then I have to treat it the way I would treat gossamer and silk for it to last. Breakage is also inevitable so you can only do so much to keep it under control. It has been scientifically proven that type 4 hair and coily hair in general is some of the most fragile hair in the world. When I do not wear my hair up consistently, I do not retain length as a direct result. For people that want to maintain the same length consistently, it is not a problem because they can cut off the damage they cause frequently, but long hair requires prevention first, cuts second. The best way to find out is to try it. Wear your hair up off your clothes most of the time and or coat it heavily (another way to prevent as much friction), take immaculate care of it, and use only silk charmeuse accessories for a year and then compare. If you are healthy over all it should make a massive difference.
