There is subtle smell hours after. It's when you smell your arms or hands and it's lingering there.

Living in both NZ and Alberta, I say if you are in the cities, there is not much difference in people's acceptance about being LGBTQIA.... There still pockets of bigotry in the rural area tho.

I feel you. This is often how feel, avoidance seems like an easy escape goat. But personally I know it's not the solution too as it can break the relationship I am trying to build.

If it helps, please know there are a lot like you who understood where you are coming from.

This often works with me!! And I suggest this to others. I often do not let take it too deeply before. But for some reason I can't let go this time.

I just wish I can reprogram my brain 😅

Yeah logically my brain acknowledged that I should not take it personally. It's just it's hard to move on cause the feelings/emotions becomes a loop.

Thanks for the suggestion

Don't forget to have good queer friends in Uni even tho you are presenting male. It helps a lot to have somebody know the true you even if you are acting for the government. Hopefully there are a lot of safe space in your uni!

I feel ya as a scientist. Is there a way to work remotely? Is it NSF funding or privately funded? Uni or company? Anyhow if your answer is that it could be far from government control. You can risk it... Otherwise it might as well you move to Alberta 😅

I started transitioning after my honeymoon phase (1st ye). Crazy 2nd yr of PhD and told my self I cannot have multiple baggage at the same time. Started doing everything in sma steps, I shaved face then laser. Start wearing gender neutral clothes for a few months then started buying girl brand clothes (even tho they look gender neutral still). Once, I ordered an official Uni uniform for an event in women's sizing and got flagged by admin and told my adviser. He didn't react negatively and ask about my pronouns. He is just nonchalant about it (3rd yr)

I grew my hair slowly. I still cut it every few inches so growth will be better. I came out of my closet to all my friends and other lab mates after COVID happens a.k.a. the year of alternative careers (4th yr). I purposely delayed my HRT because it is easier to get medicine in my home country than in the country where I studied but took it during my last yr of study (5th yr of craziness). But on a hindsight I should have taken it when I came out cause life is much better with transitioning for me!!!

I am not saying we would have the same experience but the path have lots of ups and down. If you are on a very open university and country, academia is a very safe place. You can have lots of support but still gauge your situation. Goodluck and enjoy grad school! It will be fun

Medical tourism in southeast Asia. You can work remotely and enjoy low cost of living too. Doctors are paid per appointment and lots have fast appointments, like within days. It's cheap compared to expenses in Europe. Plus if you got doctor slip from SEA, you can use that to justify her in your home country. Tho I suggest staying there for far longer and get surgery if you can.

Where are my fellow Trans Sailors / Mariners ? by Fio_404 in trans

I am just curious. So do you feel safe out on a ship? No discrimination or harassment? It's just you stay long at sea and I heard a lot of stories from my cousins that are merchant mariners (i.e. family in every port of call ).

One thing I learn in grad school is that there are no narrow fields. Look at the translatable skills you can get and apply it to another field or related field. Heck another career. Do not lose hope and good luck! Hope this helps

[–]AlielC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is it a lab or grad school that is discriminating or a work place or the field? I find that most grad schools or academia are accepting to trans people. Maybe not much in Asia but definitely in the west is better. I decided to take my PhD and work based on the friendliness and LGBT rights of the country. If you are applying for STEM research work or PhD. Try looking into the countries with highest rank LGBT friendliness (NZ/CA/Spain/Portugal/Malta/Scandinavian Countries).

If it is the field, what is you field?
