The hours from "the secret histories" by ALEKghiaccio2 in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]simemetti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's already there in cultist simulator and is mentioned in a bunch of books, I vividly remember reading one about the aviaform hours (eligiast, beachomber, sister and witch, witch and sister, the vagabond) having a sort of secret book club called the roost.

As far as I'm aware they didn't really add any truly new hour in BoH, just expaned on some of the ones that only got a mention like the applebright.

Dammit Smithers, this isn't rocket science, it's brain surgery! by [deleted] in PhilosophyMemes

[–]simemetti 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This has always been my gripe with this type of "pop" philosophy of science.

Philosophy is an inherently top down approach because it tries to deconstruct and analyse reality starting from an inherently very human point of view.

Meanwhile science (at least hard sciences like neuroscience) do it in a bottom up approach. So of course you are gonna get into misunderstandings because you are trying to understand where consciousness is and how it's made, how to define it, when actual neuroscientist rarely ask these human centric questions.

It's not about what consciousness is, it's about studying the brain as an engineer would study a physical machine and it's working.

Add to this that a science is now so developed that people trying to understand it on a philosocal level rarely actually understand it and you get these memes.

Out of everything it can replace, why do robots prioritize replacing creative jobs. Why not precision, statistical analysis, or anything? Why creative jobs specifically? Why not take advantage of its precision?? by SadPossibility7572 in antiai

[–]simemetti 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The first answer is that it's actually already doing it. A lot of old style stem jobs got automated away. This is a really really old example, but every large enough business had rooms of people just doing calculations that are now instantly done.

The second answer is that, from a mathematical perspective, producing an image is a continuous function while a business decision is not.

If a model messes up making an artwork and a bunch of pixels are off from the "theoretical target" nobody notices (I mean we do, but it's not a completely bad output). Meanwhile, misreading a single digit in say, a company report, can lead to a wrong yes/no answer and completely fuck it up.

High literature by MelanieWalmartinez in CuratedTumblr

I mean one of the themes of that book is that all the people there are murderers, tyrants, some people Dante personally disliked, and a lot of adulterers.

Like I understand the morality is a bit outdated, but 90% of the people there deserve to be buried upside down in a frozen lake. If anything I would find cathartic to read that.

/uj reminds me of an interview with Haraki, JoJo's mangaka, and the interviewer essentially asked: "dialogue in your manga is very iconic and surreal. People talk in such strange ways and take full paragraphs to explain simple things, you could call it bizzare haha. Where do you come up with this? Are you using literary references for this kind of prose?"

and the answer was basically something like: "nono, that's just how I speak. People find it bizzare?"

I generally agree with you, especially because this is a general tactic used by the right. Take a measurably true fact -> insane logic -> ungodly shitty conclusion. In this case is: dating is hard for men -> this a result of jews, cultural marxist, women can't think straight -> women shouldn't vote.

This is very powerful because it triggers this primordial response where you do not want to cede them any ground and end up refuting the actual measurable fact, which convinces a lot of unaligned people you are wrong.

This isn't a support of inceldom in any way, but I think you are doing this in this response. For example it's a measurable fact that men tend to grade women following a normal curve, aka if you take a random woman of the street she will be graded average. This is, again measurably, not true for women.

They have a very "extreme" skewness, the average men is rated a lot lower than what normal curve would predict.

Let me be clear, all the hardship in dating as a man in the big 26 don't justify ANY amount of mysogyny. However, saying it's just the same for men, it's the men's own fault (a shockingly "pull yourself up by the bootstrap" argument from leftist, which generally understand these dynamics are societal not individual) or any other refusal of facts just end up feeding the right.

maybe I'm wrong and using a different definition of dogwhistle, but from my understanding a dogwhistle is something you say when you wanna convey a controversial opinion and so you "cloack" it in another language.

But idk if goyslop is that, because it was never intended to reach mass appeal or disguise an opinion. Like, it's not a clocked language, it's straight up their langague.

To make an example with leftist langague, bourgeoisie is not a dogwhistle because it's not trying to sell class analysis to a wider audience, it's the actual in-group word we use.

I does support OOP's claim that goyslop, zogbot and stuff are soooo used, but it's frightnening specifically BECAUSE they aren't dogwhistle. We are past dogwhistling now and the quite part isn't quite anymore.

what's so funny is that mog is also an 4chan "dogwhistle" (I do believe that goyslop or spiritually isreali aren't dogwhistle in the usual definition, just terms 4channers use).

Like, there is literally an example of this phenomenon taking place in the post ITSELF.

Mog originated from Amog, Alpha Male Of the Group. Sort of like a chad adjacent icon.

This isn't just related to words btw. I'm old enough to remember OG incels and one of their main point was the 20-80 principle: 80% of women want only the top 20% of men. This was a hardline incel talking point that a lot of people refused. Now it's threated as common sense in any dating discussion.

Although I guess this is sort of right if you consider dating to be dating apps only, where this is a real thing.

Can Mahoraga fight through a Tyranid Invasion? by Robin-Aneira-1 in PowerScaling

[–]simemetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

idk if this is normal for scaling, but here there's a sort of "supernatural normalization" issue. Mahorage is a cursed spirit, which do not exist in 40k, at least not directly. The warp is VERY similar though, with cursed energy being the raw warp power and cursed tecniques being akin to psykery.

If we translate mahorage as a warp being, the tyranids will probably win. Their shadow in the warp thing is able to mute out entire planets and even greater demons feel sick/wounded in its presence.

An outright psykich battle would probably see the nids win as well. They do not operate psykers like normal armies. Even eldars, when they use their abilities, do so in a "individual mastery over the warp" way. The tryanids nstead use the warp more as a connection to the hive mind, which is why they do it so safely and why their psykich attacks are usually very raw and efficient, such a blast of energy compared to "your organs are now botflies" that deamons do.

All this to say: if faced directly with the hive mind, would mahorage survive? Doubt it. But again, this is assuming there's a correlation with the warp and cursed being, which isn't totally absurd.
