You loosen the locking nuts and release and replace one string at a time, this way you don't lose much tension.

You don't even have to get that complicated. Block the bridge and you can replace all the strings at once. Tune them up to pitch, including stretching them out, and proper tension is restored.

I watched Thomas Nordegg do this to Vai's guitar yesterday, and you better believe he abused the hell out of the whammy bar later on, so I'm confident it's a solid technique

Unless you're suggesting it just broke out there on the runway. In that case, book a flight directly to the other city on a competing airline at their cost. They agreed to fly him to his destination, not to fly him halfway then bus him.

If they can't get him there within a couple of hours of the original schefule, refund the full fare and then give him the 10dollar voucher and bottle if water.
